A Critical Literacy Approach To Student Affairs Education, Brian J. Reece, Ryan M. Rish Nov 2020

A Critical Literacy Approach To Student Affairs Education, Brian J. Reece, Ryan M. Rish

Journal of Critical Scholarship on Higher Education and Student Affairs

This article argues for the use of critical literacy as a critical pedagogy in student affairs practice. The authors describe how some currents of the student affairs literature have shifted toward a focus on student learning and critical approaches to student development and learning. Subsequently, they discuss the social turn in our understanding of literacy and a related move toward critical approaches to understanding literacy as a social practice. Finally, they present a synthesis of the literature, which results in considerations for approaching higher education student affairs contexts through a critical literacy framework, exposing gaps and areas for future theorizing …

Mobile Technology In Higher Education: An Extended Technology Acceptance Perspective, Dennis Pires, Leila Halawi Nov 2020

Mobile Technology In Higher Education: An Extended Technology Acceptance Perspective, Dennis Pires, Leila Halawi

Publications

There is a lack of research that provides institutions with information on educators’ acceptance of mobile technology in higher education within the United States. This study utilized the Chen et al. (2013) extended technology acceptance model, that extended the original Davis (1989) TAM. In this research study, Chen et al. (2013) survey instrument provided the necessary tool to collect data from educators in higher education within the United States before COVID-19. The results showed statistical significance exists in relationships across the assessed factors of perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, perceived attitude toward use, and behavioral intention, which contribute to …

Indicators Of Quality In Higher Education – Literature Review, Dugagjin Sokoli Oct 2020

Indicators Of Quality In Higher Education – Literature Review, Dugagjin Sokoli

UBT International Conference

The educational indicators, like the rest of the social indicators, have experienced great diffusion in recent years. For this reason, education indicators are increasingly being talked about, in very different contexts and referring to very different realities. Despite the many drawbacks that present, quantitative indicators are still in the process of improvement and even creation, the truth is that they facilitate the analysis of education, although their values do not explain the causal relationships or allow conclusions to be drawn univocal. Although in the different editions (OECD, 2008) some concrete indicators have been varying, the general structure is maintained around …

A Value Approach: Some Notes Toward The Educational/Competitive Aspects Of Forensics Programs, Jan J. Younger Oct 2020

A Value Approach: Some Notes Toward The Educational/Competitive Aspects Of Forensics Programs, Jan J. Younger

Proceedings of the National Developmental Conference on Individual Events

This study attempted to investigate the educational/competitive values in co-curricular forensics programs. The study made two major assumptions (1) that individual events programs should be linked to the curriculum and (2) that the identification and development of educational values would contribute to the improvement of forensic instruction.

It was the purpose of this study to offer an examination of five current studies in higher education suggesting curricular reform. These studies included; (a) Involvement in Learning: Realizing the Potential of American Higher Education (1984), (b) Project on Redefining the Meaning and Purpose of Baccalaureate Degrees (1985), (c) The report entitled "To …

Helicopter Parenting In Higher Education: A Content Analysis Of Parental Involvement As Discussed In The Media, Amanda Mclaughlin Oct 2020

Helicopter Parenting In Higher Education: A Content Analysis Of Parental Involvement As Discussed In The Media, Amanda Mclaughlin

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

Scholars and practitioners have differing views as well as definitions on overparenting at the college level, which has led to confusion in both the scholarly literature and news media coverage of the topic. The topic has become so popular in conversation that national news sources have covered it extensively, potentially influencing the priorities of policy makers and the formation of public opinion. Without a better understanding of the specific behavioral indicators of overparenting, it is unclear whether the phenomenon truly exists, and if so, what are its characteristics? Understanding how various groups in society have defined overparenting is an important …

The History, Evolution, And Trends Of Academic Dishonesty: A Literature Review, Amy Zachek Oct 2020

The History, Evolution, And Trends Of Academic Dishonesty: A Literature Review, Amy Zachek

The Nebraska Educator: A Student-Led Journal

Academic dishonesty is a murky problem without a commonly agreed upon solution in American higher education. It has a long-standing history in higher education but a short history in academic literature, it has evolved rapidly and longitudinally (McCabe & Trevino, 1996), and it has several easily apparent trends and others that the majority of researchers are in disagreement about. While traversing this perilous landscape of dichotomies, this paper will examine connections and gaps in the literature, make suggestions and recommendations for future study based off of these results, and examine the implications that these recommendations could have on higher education …

Managing Stakeholder Conflicting Expectations In Higher Education: A Hybrid Approach, Abdul Gabbar Al-Sharafi, Fatema Al-Rubai’Ey Oct 2020

Managing Stakeholder Conflicting Expectations In Higher Education: A Hybrid Approach, Abdul Gabbar Al-Sharafi, Fatema Al-Rubai’Ey

Journal of Educational and Psychological Studies

This paper proposes a hybrid approach to the management of stakeholder conflicting expectations in higher education (HE) by combining Stakeholder Theory (ST) and a participatory approach. In this paper, we use anex post factoapproach to retrospectively report Sultan Qaboos University (SQU) experience in managing stakeholder conflicting expectations in developing the BA in English Language and Literature Program as a case study. We show that for an effective management of stakeholder conflicting expectations in HE, the three perspectives of ST (i.e., descriptive, instrumental and normative) have to be taken together as a unified approach with the normative perspective occupying the core. …

Chasing Rainbows: Finding Our Interwoven Narrative And Voice Through Collaborative Auto-Ethnographic Poetry, Michiko M. Kealoha Oct 2020

Chasing Rainbows: Finding Our Interwoven Narrative And Voice Through Collaborative Auto-Ethnographic Poetry, Michiko M. Kealoha

International Journal of Human Rights Education

When was the first time you discovered our stories together are important?

This notes from the field article documents the author’s journey to discovering collaborative auto-ethnographic poetry as a powerful pedagogical tool to decolonizing peace education and human rights education. With the ability to disrupt colonized academic knowledge through counter-narratives and ancestral practices, collaborative auto-ethnographic poetry can be practiced as therapy, inquiry, liberation, and validation that strengthens voices in an authentic way—equipping people with the ability to promote peace and social justice. What started as a class icebreaker grew into a project that brought communities together on the international stage. …

Decolonizing Approaches To Human Rights And Peace Education Higher Education Curriculum, Danielle Aldawood Oct 2020

Decolonizing Approaches To Human Rights And Peace Education Higher Education Curriculum, Danielle Aldawood

International Journal of Human Rights Education

While the project of decolonization within higher education has become important in recent years (Kester et al., 2019), human rights and peace education specifically have undergone critique (Coysh, 2014; Al-Daraweesh and Snauwaert, 2013; Barreto, 2013; Zembylas, 2018; Williams, 2017; Cruz and Fontan, 2014). This critique has focused on the delegitimization of non-Western epistemologies around peace and human rights and the reliance on Eurocentric structures of thought and power within curricular and pedagogical practices (Kester et al., 2019). The decolonization of academic human rights curricula is the primary focus of this research; through interviews and content analysis with U.S. human rights …

COVID-19 @ Whittier (full list of items)

This document contains the answers to the same four questions that were asked of two students who wished to remain anonymous. Both stated that the pandemic made it much more difficult for them to learn and participate in school activities. They offer their perspectives on how the pandemic has affected their motivation to continue schooling as well as their plans for the future, including whether or not to continue with their college education. They also offer perspectives on how they think their race has played a factor in continuing their schooling.

Implementation Of A 25-Minute Mini-Lecture On Learning And Studying In Large-Enrollment First-Year General Chemistry Courses, Shawn M. Miller Oct 2020

Implementation Of A 25-Minute Mini-Lecture On Learning And Studying In Large-Enrollment First-Year General Chemistry Courses, Shawn M. Miller

Journal on Empowering Teaching Excellence

Poor results on the first exam in a course can be a shock to freshmen college students who found great success in high school. The experience can be demoralizing and put students in the mindset that academic success is out of reach. To convince such students that not only is academic success possible but readily achievable, I presented a 25-minute mini-lecture on learning and studying in two large-enrollment general chemistry courses (total N = 289) based on author Dr. Saundra McGuire’s work. The mini-lecture discussed human learning and practical study tools. The purposes of the mini-lecture were to: 1) examine …

Disability As Diversity In Higher Education, Emily M. Burns Oct 2020

Disability As Diversity In Higher Education, Emily M. Burns

Journal of Critical Scholarship on Higher Education and Student Affairs

College students with disabilities experience many barriers to postsecondary education including disability documentation requirements, social exclusion, inaccessible course design, and ostracizing campus environments. Most postsecondary leaders regulate disabled students to disability services offices, worrying about adherence to disability laws. Contributors to Disability as Diversity in Higher Education: Policies and Practices to Enhance Student Success, edited by Kim & Aquino (2017), challenge higher education personnel to implement intentional strategies that would include disabled students in all aspects of campus life.
