I Matter, As Does The World: Critical Consciousness In Higher Education, Myra Dutko Dec 2016

I Matter, As Does The World: Critical Consciousness In Higher Education, Myra Dutko

Dissertations

This dissertation describes how graduate students in a community organizing class move along the critical consciousness pathway. Critical consciousness in the academic arena is critical to the development of democratic participation and agency in students. Critical consciousness is the ability to see, judge and act on issues of injustice in order to create social change. In addition, this research examines what barriers arise in that process. Research participants from an urban, private university in the Midwest narrate the creation of a learning environment and the process of moving towards critical consciousness awakening through journaling and focus group discussions. The data, …

How do developments in digital media support scholarship and teaching, and how can academics apply them to further social justice activism? The authors, a sociologist and a librarian, examine scholarly practice in the digital era to explore how academics, journalists, and activists can combine efforts to support social justice issues. With scholarly communication undergoing rapid change, and with digital innovation applied in higher education for many reasons, authors outline what scholars can do to channel their work to benefit the public good.

Student Unrest: From Historic Infamy To Humane Inclusivity, Matthew Cooney, Kenneth Borland Nov 2016

Student Unrest: From Historic Infamy To Humane Inclusivity, Matthew Cooney, Kenneth Borland

Journal of Research, Assessment, and Practice in Higher Education

Infamous responses to historic student unrest clash with contemporary student affairs educators’ desire for a humane, inclusive approach to student unrest. The authors detail two historic responses: the 1968 Tlatelolco massacre at the Universidad Autónoma de México and the 1970 Kent State University shootings.

Like today, students expressed escalating dissatisfaction with social conditions and displeasure with official responses. To not repeat unrest becoming violence, authors introduce concepts for humanely and inclusively responding to student unrest.

Two Decades Of Progress For Minorities In Aviation, David C. Ison, Rene Herron, Linda Weiland

Journal of Aviation Technology and Engineering

Diversity within the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields has historically lagged behind that which is found in other vocational paths. Aviation has also suffered poor diversity with virtually no participation among professional pilots. With both the literature specifying the benefits of diversity in the aviation workplace and potential shortages of pilots looming, it is in the interest of aerospace stakeholders to have access to the most comprehensively diverse employee pool possible. The purpose of this research was to evaluate the trends in participation by minorities who completed professional pilot education programs in the United States. Data concerning the …

An Investigation Of The Trends In Pricing For Christian Higher Education And Its Relationship To Perceived Quality, Richard Holaway Oct 2016

An Investigation Of The Trends In Pricing For Christian Higher Education And Its Relationship To Perceived Quality, Richard Holaway

Doctor of Business Administration (DBA)

Christian higher education administrators battle with how much to increase tuition on a consistent basis. One of the concerns with increasing tuition is the negative effect it will have on their prospective student market. The literature review was used to establish an understanding of the price-quality (PQ) relationship and its role in higher education, identify gaps in the research, and provide a context for the current study. The summary of the literature review is comprised of main points of interest through the previous sections and shows a need for further exploration into how the PQ relationship affects Christian higher education. …

Course and program-level data were analyzed to compare quality for two programs – an existing hybrid and new online. Analysis of student enrollments, course evaluations, survey results, retention, and time to completion reveal similar experiences reported from students in …

Does Eco-Labeling Of Services Matter? Evidence From Higher Education, Daniel C. Hickman, Andrew G. Meyer Oct 2016

Does Eco-Labeling Of Services Matter? Evidence From Higher Education, Daniel C. Hickman, Andrew G. Meyer

Economics Faculty Research and Publications

Eco-labeling of services has become increasingly common, yet little empirical evidence exists concerning its effectiveness. We address this gap in the literature by analyzing a highly visible eco-label, the American College and University Presidents’ Climate Commitment (ACUPCC), in the sector of higher education. We match information about the ACUPCC to the US Department of Education IPEDS database to examine the impact of signing on student applications, admissions, and enrollment. We mainly utilize a difference-in-difference approach to identify the effects of interest but confirm results with an interrupted time series model. We find that signing the ACUPCC increases applications and admitted …
