Classroom Climate For Women: The Tip Of The Iceberg, Roberta M. Hall Jan 1985

Classroom Climate For Women: The Tip Of The Iceberg, Roberta M. Hall

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

This article examines the classroom climate experienced by women students in higher education, focusing on subtle and overt patterns of differential treatment that can discourage women’s participation, confidence, and academic development. Drawing on student accounts and findings from The Classroom Climate Project, it identifies behaviors that single out women, such as sexist remarks, comments on appearance, gendered humor, and stereotyped examples, as well as behaviors that overlook women, including interruptions, reduced attention to women’s comments, and assumptions that men are more likely to contribute meaningfully. The article connects these classroom practices to broader patterns in advising, professional preparation, and campus …

Response To The University Of The Future, Lane Jennings Jan 1985

Response To The University Of The Future, Lane Jennings

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

This response essay reflects on the future of the university from the perspective of an editor and journalist responding to essays on civic virtue, interdisciplinary communication, and computing literacy. It considers the university both as a civic community and as a looser relationship among teachers, students, and knowledge, drawing comparisons between American residential higher education, medieval universities, and emerging computer-networked instruction. The essay supports the role of universities in preparing students for democratic participation while also warning that new telecommunications technologies may reshape or weaken campus-based community if institutions do not adapt deliberately. It discusses interdisciplinary communication as a way …

Nonverbal Communication Of The Deaf, Jayne S. Lytle Oct 1984

Nonverbal Communication Of The Deaf, Jayne S. Lytle

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

Nonverbal communication among deaf people is discussed in relation to American Sign Language, Deaf culture, and interactions between deaf and hearing people. The article distinguishes between nonverbal behavior and the visual linguistic features of ASL, noting that movements of the face, eyes, head, and body may function as part of the language rather than as merely expressive gestures. It reviews assumptions about deaf people’s receptive and expressive nonverbal abilities, including the idea that visual communication automatically produces greater skill in interpreting body language. The article describes characteristic behaviors related to proxemics, touch, attention-getting gestures, eye gaze, and paralanguage, with attention …

Sign Systems In Communication, Carol J. Garretson Oct 1984

Sign Systems In Communication, Carol J. Garretson

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

Sign systems and sign languages are introduced through distinctions among American Sign Language, manual English systems, fingerspelling, simultaneous communication, Total Communication, Pidgin Sign English, international sign, and Cued Speech. The article clarifies terminology related to deafness, hearing impairment, and manual communication, while addressing common misconceptions that sign language is universal, nonverbal, or merely gestural. It traces the development of home signs, childrenese, school signs, and regional signing patterns, and explains that American Sign Language is an independent language with its own grammar, syntax, vocabulary, and capacity for abstraction. The article also describes efforts to represent English manually through systems such …

Teacher Attitude Toward Composition Instruction At The Postsecondary Level: Identification And Formation, Jane B. Braunger

Dissertations and Theses
