An Evaluation Of The Procedures Used To Assess And Remediate The Perceived Writing Difficulties Of Undergraduate Students In The Faculty Of Education At Edith Cowan University, Les Puhl

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

The standards of written literacy of teacher-education students at Edith Cowan University are perceived by many staff to be inadequate. The Faculty of Education's response to this perceived inadequacy is to carry out a mandatory skills-based remedial writing programme for students whose literacy competencies are judged to be deficient, The instrument used to assess the students' literacy competencies is the English Skills Assessment test. The students' performances in the various skills which the test purports to measure, also determine the area in which they are given remedial instruction if the results of the test suggest this is necessary. However, many …

Enrolling The International English As A Second Language Student In Nova University’S Programs For Higher Education: Implications For The Future, Daniel Lea Carlson Jul 1990

Enrolling The International English As A Second Language Student In Nova University’S Programs For Higher Education: Implications For The Future, Daniel Lea Carlson

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

Since 1972, Programs for Higher Education at Nova University has offered a field-based Ed.D. program to clusters of students in various locations around the United States. In 1985, a regional cluster was designed to meet the needs of interested prospective students who were not located close enough to the existing local clusters to participate in the program. As the regional cluster grew, it was joined by a number of international students who live in other countries and for whom English is a second or third language.

Enrollment of international ESL students raised questions regarding the level of English proficiency needed …

Educational Goals And Self-Concepts Of Distance Learners At Empire State College, Lowell H. Roberts Jun 1990

Educational Goals And Self-Concepts Of Distance Learners At Empire State College, Lowell H. Roberts

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

The Center for Distance Learning (CDL) of Empire State College {ESC} provides courses and individualized degree programs through distance education delivery systems. Mentoring, the primary mode of teacher - student contact, is difficult at a distance, since faculty cannot meet face-to-face with their students. The purpose of this study was to analyze the self-reported learning goals and academic self-conceps5 of the College's distance students. The study was intended to help mentors and administrators better understand these students, particularly their objectives in pursuing a higher education and their confidence in their capacities for academic success. The research questions of this Major …

Teaching In A Liberal Arts College: How Foreign Language Courses Contribute To "Writing Across The Curriculum" Programs, Ilona Klein Jan 1990

Teaching In A Liberal Arts College: How Foreign Language Courses Contribute To "Writing Across The Curriculum" Programs, Ilona Klein

Faculty Publications

This essay shares some thoughts about the need for interaction between foreign language instructors and English teachers, both in high schools and at the university level. As a foreign language teacher for the past nine years (the last four in a liberal arts college), I have encountered several problems and difficulties that could be overcome, I believe, if English, Writing, and Foreign Language departments addressed them together. I do not claim to be able to give definite answers, since many pedagogical concepts concerting L2 acquisition/learning and their possible application to writing programs remain misunderstood or are presently debated by teacher …

The Labyrinth Of Challenge To Change: An Analysis Of Community College Leaders' Thinking Styles And Behavioral Practices In The Current Environment, Mary Elizabeth Scott Edd Jan 1989

The Labyrinth Of Challenge To Change: An Analysis Of Community College Leaders' Thinking Styles And Behavioral Practices In The Current Environment, Mary Elizabeth Scott Edd

Dissertations

The present research addressed a concern of both urgent and profound dimensions in the modern world: the current and compelling need for a radically different kind of leadership to meet the challenge of turbulent change. This need has been crystallized by a new and emerging paradigm shift which at once reflects, confronts and shapes the realities experienced today. This study sought to set in relief the current thinking styles of nominated California community college leaders and to see if and how these correlated with their leadership behavioral practices. The Human Information Processing Survey (HIPS) and the Leadership Practices Inventory-Self (LPI-S) …

To What Extent Should Instructors Be Held Accountable For Students' Value-Added Skills?, Jack Douglas Apr 1987

To What Extent Should Instructors Be Held Accountable For Students' Value-Added Skills?, Jack Douglas

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

This article examines the applicability of the value-added model of learning to speech communication education and the degree to which instructors should be held accountable for students’ growth. Douglas critiques the model’s economic and industrial origins, which frame students as products and teachers as assembly-line workers. While the model provides clarity through measurable objectives and feedback mechanisms, it risks narrowing learning to easily quantifiable skills at the expense of creativity, individuality, and higher-order symbolic development. The paper argues that the model can be useful for assessing basic, observable skills, but is inadequate for capturing the organic, non-linear nature of human …

Development Of Quality Factors For College And University Theatre Programs, Kelvie C. Comer Apr 1987

Development Of Quality Factors For College And University Theatre Programs, Kelvie C. Comer

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

This article examines the meaning and application of “quality” in theatre programs within higher education. It emphasizes that quality must be defined not only in abstract terms but also through practical factors that affect program success and survival. Key considerations include curriculum design, student admission standards, faculty recruitment and retention, and the establishment of appropriate evaluative criteria. The discussion highlights the influence of external judgments, such as accreditation and professional expectations, as well as the role of internal leadership in shaping program direction. The article argues that quality is not an accidental byproduct but the result of conscious decisions that …

A Second Chance: Meeting The Needs Of Adult Learners, Elizabeth F. Fideler Jan 1987

A Second Chance: Meeting The Needs Of Adult Learners, Elizabeth F. Fideler

New England Journal of Public Policy

Changing demographics and economic factors are focusing national attention on adult learning as a major resource for solving many of the nation 's social and economic dilemmas. However, adult learners, the poor especially, face obstacles to educational advancement even where tuition is waived or incentive grants are given. Despite the considerable recent growth of adult education, the vast number of those who need it the most are not as yet participating. This article examines adult-education practices and participation in general — in the areas of literacy, occupational education, and higher learning — and conditions in Massachusetts in particular. It explains …

Speech And Mass Communication: Together Again, E. Culpepper Clark Aug 1986

Speech And Mass Communication: Together Again, E. Culpepper Clark

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

This essay examines the historical development and administrative philosophy behind the integration of speech and mass communication programs at the University of Alabama, Birmingham. It situates the merger within broader debates over the relationship between professional and liberal arts education, arguing that the disciplines share enough theoretical and pedagogical ground to justify collaboration at the undergraduate level. Through a detailed account of departmental structure, curriculum, faculty composition, and tenure policy, the essay demonstrates how institutional design can balance academic and professional objectives. The author advocates for a liberal arts orientation rooted in rhetoric, hermeneutics, and language-based theory, even within career-oriented …
