On The Concept Of Form In Geographical Studies, Gerald R. Pitzl Jan 1974

On The Concept Of Form In Geographical Studies, Gerald R. Pitzl

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

ABSTRACT - The concept of form in its subjective (strictly qualitative) connotations is inappropriate as the organizing principle for geographical investigations. Yet, elements identified as formal (structural/morphological) which are objectively measurable are valid for study and possible integrations toward holistic conclusions. Thus, if the form-function-process approach is to be advanced, the formal segment must be stated in a clearly determinable mode in order to allow integration.

Single-Family Housing In Sarpy County Urbanized Area, Nebraska, 1960-1990, John D. Hardin Apr 1973

Single-Family Housing In Sarpy County Urbanized Area, Nebraska, 1960-1990, John D. Hardin

Student Work

The increase in the number of new single-family homes, associated with the spread of urban development around an urban center, has long been of interest to both geographers and students of urban growth*. The geographer's concern arises because new housing promotes urban sprawl. Inefficiences in the provision of public services, notably in the development of secondary streets and highways within the study area, have created irregularities in the spatial pattern around the city. The expansion of new housing into suburban areas has also been associated with a trend in rising prices of housing most distant from the central city. In …

Some Aspects Of The Bread Baking Industry In Omaha, Shirley A. Jahnke Aug 1972

Some Aspects Of The Bread Baking Industry In Omaha, Shirley A. Jahnke

Student Work

Since the beginnings of civilization, bread has been a staff of life. The unleavened flat breads of ancient times, gr&ndmother0s old-fashioned home-made loaf, and today’s precision-controlled product have all vitally contributed to the world's food supplies and have made baking a basic economic activity in most societies. Despite the increased variety of foods now available, bread is still a staple in many diets. Although bread baking was one of the last types of manufacturing to advance to the commercial stage, the development of the industry has progressed rapidly so that today commercial bakers account for approximately 90 per cent of …

Changing Land Use Patterns In Cass County, Nebraska 1941-1971, Horst Dieter Albrecht

Student Work

This thesis is a study of the changing land use patterns of Cass County, Nebraska. Data for this thesis was obtained from government agencies and field research conducted by the author. The economic base of the county has traditionally been agriculture and agriculture continues to comprise the largest single occupation in the county. Average farm size is increasing, a trend which will continue to reduce the number of smaller, family operated farms. Although the number of inarms has been steadily declining, the value of land and per capita income has been rising. In terms of value received, cattle raising has …

The Colorado Plateau, Robert Durrenberger Jan 1972

The Colorado Plateau, Robert Durrenberger

Canyonlands Research Bibliography

The Colorado Plateau was one of the last areas in the United States to be developed economically. Before the 1880s it was virtually empty except for Indians. Today the vast scenic and energy resources of the area are under development, and projections for future development are frightening. Problems of land use management are directly related to the fragmented nature of landholdings. Present methods of consolidation are inadequate, and new approaches to the organization of space must be devised if further degradation of the environment is to be prevented.
