From Boom To Bust: Post Gold Rush Patterns Of Adjustment In A California Mining Region. (Volumes I And Ii)., Lary Michael Dilsaver

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Mining in Nevada, Placer, El Dorado, and Amador counties in California began with the discovery of gold at Coloma in 1848. Thousands of people flocked to the region, built towns, roads, and an economy dependent on placer gold mining. Declining placer resources, coupled with strikes outside California, signalled the end of the boom period in the region. A long adjustment in the man-land system culminated with the end of mining as a significant economic function during World War I. Three major processes operated to alter the region from one with a mono-functional economy, a mobile population, and spatial homogeneity to …

The Yongnam-Ro: An Historical Geography Of A Korean Royal Road. (Volumes I And Ii)., Young-Joon Choe Jan 1982

The Yongnam-Ro: An Historical Geography Of A Korean Royal Road. (Volumes I And Ii)., Young-Joon Choe

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The Yongnam-ro, the main communication artery between Seoul and Pusan, was the shortest and the most important route running through the central part of southern Korea. This road evolved as a military campaign route in ancient times and finally as an administrative communication artery in the Yi Dynasty. Although spanning some rugged areas in its course, the Yongnam-ro had some advantages: first, it avoided the troublesome communication system connected by river crossings because its path followed longitudinal valleys of the Han and Naktong rivers; second, it connected the waterways of the Han and Naktong; third, it formed the pivot belt …

Geojurisprudence: Studies In Law, Liberty, And Landscapes., Ernest St. Clair Easterly Iii Jan 1980

Geojurisprudence: Studies In Law, Liberty, And Landscapes., Ernest St. Clair Easterly Iii

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Every culture must generally possess an order that is either deliberately created (human design) or the result of experience (human action). Two ordering forces, Human Design and Human Action, manifest themselves in the form of laws and legal systems which govern the individuals who form the thus ordered civil society. The Anglo-American Common Law family of legal systems and the Romano-Germanic Civil Law family of legal systems basically reflect the ordering forces of Human Action and Human Design, respectively. Because laws and legal systems leave the imprint of sovereign authority on the landscape, the study of the culture history and …

The Cultural Geography Of Rural Cemeteries: Saunders County, Nebraska, Gordon M. Riedesel May 1979

The Cultural Geography Of Rural Cemeteries: Saunders County, Nebraska, Gordon M. Riedesel

Student Work

Rural cemeteries reflect local culture history. Cultural preferences and attitudes are expressed in the fixtures of cemeteries, tombstones, tombstone arrangement, and cemetery landscaping. The pattern of rural cemeteries can reveal the dynamics of population and settlement, and cultural origins and dispersals. The rural cemeteries of Saunders County, Nebraska, were studied in the summer of 1978 in order to 1) map the relative location of the cemeteries; 2) determine the pattern of growth and development of the cemeteries; 3) establish a working taxonomic system of cemetery size and character; 4) interpret the cultural phenomena related to rural cemeteries; 5) determine distinctive …

An Integrated Evaluation Of The Terrain In A Portion Of The Missouri River Basin, Iowa-Nebraska, William H. Harrison

Student Work

The objective of this study is to determine the effectiveness of an integrated terrain evaluation method as a tool for land-use planning in the United States. It is hypothesized that this method has distinct advantages over the non-integrated methods in use today.

Geographical Definition Of Mississippi Sound, Charles K. Eleuterius Jan 1978

Geographical Definition Of Mississippi Sound, Charles K. Eleuterius

Gulf and Caribbean Research

Boundaries for Mississippi Sound are determined by application of definitions, established surveying practices and observations of the physical processes of the area. U.S. Coast and Gcodetic charts 1266 (1972 edition), 1267 (1972 edition) and 1268 (1974 edition) were used in ascertaining the boundaries. These boundaries provide a formal geographical definition for Mississippi Sound.

Cirques As Glacier Locations, William L. Graf Jan 1976

Cirques As Glacier Locations, William L. Graf

Faculty Publications

A comparison between the 319 cirques that contain glaciers and a sample of 240 empty cirques in the Rocky Mountains shows that in the present climatic situation, landforms are strong factors in determining the locations of glaciers. An optimum glacier location is a large cirque facing northeast, with a planimetric shape of width greater than length, high steep walls, a pass located to the windward, and a peak to the southwest. Glaciers survive in the present climatic conditions because of a geomorphic feedback system, whereby glaciers are protected by cirque forms that owe their morphology to glacial processes.
