Quantitative Analysis Of Pinedale Landforms, Beartooth Mountains, Montana And Wyoming, William L. Graf Jan 1971

Quantitative Analysis Of Pinedale Landforms, Beartooth Mountains, Montana And Wyoming, William L. Graf

Faculty Publications

The spatial distribution of terminal moraines in alpine valleys can be quantitatively described using distance/regression models. Surface parameters indicative of age may also be numerically analyzed. Evaluation of postglacial modification of valley sides between terminal moraines provides an additional indicator of relative age of valley segments. Analysis of the geomorphology of alpine features in the upper Rock Creek drainage in the southeastern Beartooth Mountains, Montana, shows that glaciers in this area deposited evidence of two Bull Lake, four Pinedale, and two Neo glacial advances.

An Analysis Of Geographical Concepts And Characteristics Of Maps In Selected Textbooks, Helen Elizabeth Wittke May 1970

An Analysis Of Geographical Concepts And Characteristics Of Maps In Selected Textbooks, Helen Elizabeth Wittke

Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of the thesis was to examine the extent to which geography is integrated into history courses. This was done through analyses of the maps in eighth and tenth grade history books. Every map in each book was tabulated according to its purpose, characteristics, and cartographic techniques. The statistics which were gathered from these tabulations were then used as a basis for percentages of the maps devoted to various purposes. In addition to this, twenty-five maps were analyzed in detail, with an examination not only of the map, but of the accompanying text, and the method in which the …

German-Russian Catholic Colonization In Western Kansas: A Settlement Geography., Albert Jepmond Petersen Jr Jan 1970

German-Russian Catholic Colonization In Western Kansas: A Settlement Geography., Albert Jepmond Petersen Jr

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The change in an areal landscape pattern is dependent first upon the nature of the land, and second upon the character of the people who settle there. The morphology of the present Ellis County, Kansas, landscape has developed as a composite of traditional German-Russian Catholic culture interacting with the pre-existing physical and cultural milieu. A blend of adopted and imported culture traits had created within the Kansas study area a German-Russian settlement pattern which enabled the first successful agrarian exploitation of the American Great Plains. The German-agriculturalist who colonized the Russian-Volga under the invitation of Catharine the Great immigrated to …

The Geomorphology Of The Glacial Valley Cross Section, William L. Graf Jan 1970

The Geomorphology Of The Glacial Valley Cross Section, William L. Graf

Faculty Publications

Several alpine valley systems in the southeastern Beartooth Mountains, Montana and Wyoming, have been examined using techniques similar to methods of stream system analysis. The general equation y = a x**b is the most adequate mathematical model for the cross valley profile; b values range between 1.5 and 2.0, indicating a parabolic form. As intensity of erosion increases in the glacial valley system, the b value also increases, indicating relatively deeper and narrower valley cross sections. The law of stream numbers, the law of stream lengths, and the bifurcation ratio, derived from fluvial geomorphology, are also applicable in glacial geomorphology.

Delimitation Of The Omaha Wheat Source Supply Region, John T. Wilhelm Aug 1969

Delimitation Of The Omaha Wheat Source Supply Region, John T. Wilhelm

Student Work

The ensuing study is an attempt to analyze a specific grain-source market area of a major business in Omaha, Nebraska, the Omaha Grain Exchange. Not only is the study valuable as an addition to the literature, but it is also the first of its kind for Omaha. According to grain merchants, the study should represent a most complete analysis to date of a grain supply area for a primary grain market in the United States.

Industrial Distribution In The Omaha Standard Metropolitan Statistical Area, Donald William Lea Jul 1968

Industrial Distribution In The Omaha Standard Metropolitan Statistical Area, Donald William Lea

Student Work

Urban geographers have long been interested in various aspects of industrial location and distribution in the urban community. The pattern and structure of urban industrial development has been the subject of many empirical studies. However, these studies have tended to concentrate on the larger metropolitian centers, and are generally bsed on such indices as, invested capital, or value added in the manufacturing process. Since basic data for these indices are not available for the smaller urban centers, other indices will be used in this study. These are, relative location and distribution of industrial establishments, number and size of industrial establishments, …

The Effects Of Geographical And Climatic Setting On The Economic Advantages Of Alternative Flood Control Measures, Clyde R. Dempsey, L. Douglas James Jan 1968

The Effects Of Geographical And Climatic Setting On The Economic Advantages Of Alternative Flood Control Measures, Clyde R. Dempsey, L. Douglas James

KWRRI Research Reports

It has long been realized that tributary urban development and channel improvement greatly affect the flow regime in a given watershed. A previous study used the Stanford Watershed Model to derive relationships expressing how the flood peaks in Sacramento, California, might be expected to vary with changing conditions of urbanization, channelization, and tributary drainage area. In order to observe the effects of climatic setting and geographical location on these relationships, the same type of analysis was applied to a drainage area near Louisville, Kentucky.

If reservoir storage is to be considered in a flood control program, it is necessary to …

A Geography Of The Upper Salt Creek Watershed, David M. Thorndike Jan 1968

A Geography Of The Upper Salt Creek Watershed, David M. Thorndike

Student Work

The region here designated as the Upper Salt Creek Watershed lies almost entirely in southwestern Lancaster County about eight miles south of Lincoln, Nebraska, and comprises an area of some 168 square miles. However, approximately three square miles of the western edge of the watershed are located in Saline county. In order to facilitate the collection of data, the Lancaster-Saline County line is considered as the western boundary of the watershed and teh portion in Saline County is excluded from the study area. All other boundaries are the drainage divides that separate the watershed from the adjacent basins.

Comparative Study Of Recitation And Review In Seventh Grade Programmed Geography, Jacob Max Setzer

All Master's Theses

The purpose of this study was to compare the effectiveness of two methods of reinforcing learning gained from programmed material in seventh grade geography classes. The means used for evaluating effectiveness were: (1) comparing retention of the factual knowledge of the material by students exposed to the two methods immediately after completing the material, and, after a time lapse of six months, and (2) comparing the ability of students to transfer their factual knowledge of the material immediately after completing the material, and, after a time lapse of six months.
