Equipotentiality In Urban Recreation Opportunities, Bryan James Smale Jan 1988

Equipotentiality In Urban Recreation Opportunities, Bryan James Smale

Digitized Theses

Equal opportunity in the provision of urban recreation resources has been the principal goal of most public leisure service agencies yet the reliance on the use of recreation standards in the planning of opportunities does not guarantee that equal opportunity in fact is being achieved. In order to assess equal opportunity of provision, a theoretical model is proposed that establishes an evaluative criterion based on the coincidence of same levels of the demand for recreation and of the supply of resources at the same points on a surface representing the community. The conceptual model of urban recreation that is proposed …

Dimensions Of Development And Change In Bangladesh, 1960-1980, Mohammad Abu Chowdhury Jan 1988

Dimensions Of Development And Change In Bangladesh, 1960-1980, Mohammad Abu Chowdhury

Digitized Theses

Bangladesh is a classic example of an overwhelmingly rural, low income, less developed country, seeking to achieve basic goals of development in both economic and social terms. In this study, what has been attempted is an analysis of change based on an array of 31 variables measuring social and economic well-being, and relating to an overall concept of development based on social justice and equality of opportunity. Change has been measured over the period 1960 to 1980 using data from the 1961, 1974 and 1981 censuses, organized on the spatial base of Bangladesh's 71 Districts. The primary objective of the …

Landscape Changes On The Mescalero Apache Reservation: Eastern Apache Adaptation To Federal Indian Policy., Martha L. Henderson Jan 1988

Landscape Changes On The Mescalero Apache Reservation: Eastern Apache Adaptation To Federal Indian Policy., Martha L. Henderson

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The Eastern Apache, once a hunter and gatherer culture group of Native Americans, now reside as a tribe formally recognized by the United States government on the Mescalero Apache Reservation in south central New Mexico. Since Eastern Apache were assigned to the reservation by executive order in 1883, the group has adopted aspects of American culture while maintaining Eastern Apache landscape patterns. This dissertation examines Eastern Apache landscape patterns prior to and after reservation assignment with the use of geographical, historical, ethnographic, and economic data. While United States Indian policy has emphasized culture change, Eastern Apache landscape patterns of land …

The Strange Cases Of Alberta's Guarantees Acknowledgement Act A Study Of Choice-Of-Law Method, Vaughan Black Sep 1987

The Strange Cases Of Alberta's Guarantees Acknowledgement Act A Study Of Choice-Of-Law Method, Vaughan Black

Dalhousie Law Journal

Fifty years ago John Willis wrote Two Approaches to the Conflict of Laws: A Comparative Study of the English Law and the Restatement of the American Law Institute. There he described two different - perhaps even opposed - conceptions of the problem posed by cases involving geographically complex facts. It is a goal of this article to assess the status and the vices and virtues of those two approaches in Canada today. Such a task is not a mere updating of Willis' piece, though that alone might be a useful exercise. In the first place, Willis' analysis takes place largely …

The Cemetery As A Cultural Manifestation: Louisiana Necrogeography., Tadashi Nakagawa Jan 1987

The Cemetery As A Cultural Manifestation: Louisiana Necrogeography., Tadashi Nakagawa

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Cultural geography, in order to advance as a science, must stand on a deductive theory which is subject to empirical tests. This study establishes a scientific theory for geographical interpretation of cultural landscape by using Louisiana cemeteries as empirical objects. Based upon the assumption that, ultimately, only individual men can play a causative role in the creation of the cemetery landscape, a theory is constructed by examining man's action modeled on the practical syllogism. Operationally defined, culture is the expression of the individual's voluntary group identity that can be identified by comparing groups. A variety of group identities which are …

The Mining Frontier And Transportation In The North: Analogies To Alaska (Soviet Union, Canada, Scandinavia), Edwin Milton Rhoads Apr 1986

The Mining Frontier And Transportation In The North: Analogies To Alaska (Soviet Union, Canada, Scandinavia), Edwin Milton Rhoads

Theses (Unassigned)

This study identifies and analyzes the most important variables which have influenced the development of mineral resources in the Circumpolar North. The purpose is to determine, based on analogies, those variables most likely to be critical in the future development of Alaska's rich mineral resources. The factors most essential for any mineral development are: the location of viable deposits, demand for minerals, favorable governmental policies, available technology, transportation, sources of energy, investment capital, and economic or social or political benefits which exceed costs. These factors are discussed in terms of historical experiences in the Circumpolar North, a region in which …

Functional Regions And Spatial Interaction: The Black/White Model, Valerian Titus Noronha Jan 1986

Functional Regions And Spatial Interaction: The Black/White Model, Valerian Titus Noronha

Digitized Theses

The functional region is usually conceptualized as a spatial partitioning that identifies communities of interest. Attempts at quantitative definition have mimicked analogous concepts in the social sciences, especially social clique identification. Although it is accepted that the functional region is based on human interaction, little attention has been paid to interaction modeling in the context of functional regions. This is partly because the spatial interaction model is not equipped to handle behavioral biases.;This research develops a model of spatial interaction that recognizes perceptual affinities or barriers between spatial units. Derived from the Luce and Tversky choice axioms, the Black/White Model …

The Evolution Of A Heliotropic Tourism Landscape: The Case Of Antigua, David Bruce Weaver Jan 1986

The Evolution Of A Heliotropic Tourism Landscape: The Case Of Antigua, David Bruce Weaver

Digitized Theses

Geographers have only begun to examine the phenomenon of tourism in the Third World, despite the increasing importance of the activity. Existing models of tourism space were found to be inadequate to represent the evolution of these emerging tourist destinations. Using the Caribbean island of Antigua as a case study, the spatial development of tourism in underdeveloped small scale peripheral environments was investigated and modelled. Four stages of tourism development (pre-tourism, transition, early tourism dominant and late tourism dominant) were initially identified using absolute tourist arrivals and an economic transition model for the island. These were then profiled during a …

Church Buildings Enter The Urban Age: A Louisiana Example Of The Church In Settlement Geography (1885-1930)., Gail L. Schlundt Sechrist Jan 1986

Church Buildings Enter The Urban Age: A Louisiana Example Of The Church In Settlement Geography (1885-1930)., Gail L. Schlundt Sechrist

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The type of church building being erected today is quite different from the traditional white steepled church on the village green. Church buildings and their location in the community have gradually changed as American religion has become more complex. the changes in religion reflect the dramatic transformation of American society from a rural to an urban culture. This process began after the Civil War, but it was not widely acknowledged until the last decades of the nineteenth century. The transformation was not limited to the large urban centers, but can be seen in towns and villages across the nation. Various …

A Comparative Analysis Of Multidimensional Diffusion Models: The Diffusion Of The Prohibition Movement In The United States Of America, 1876-1919., Robert Paul Sechrist Jan 1986

A Comparative Analysis Of Multidimensional Diffusion Models: The Diffusion Of The Prohibition Movement In The United States Of America, 1876-1919., Robert Paul Sechrist

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Geographical study of the spatial spread of innovations has revealed much about the spatial components of innovation diffusion, but innovations diffuse in other dimensions as well. This study compares the ability of the classic spatial diffusion model with diffusion modeled in constructed social-economic dimensions. Each model is compared with its counterpart in its ability to simulate and explain the growth of the prohibition movement during the period 1876 to 1920. The various models indicate that prohibition spread in several dimensions simultaneously. The spatial diffusion model demonstrates that the innovation spread first to the West and then back North from a …

Cadastral Surveying In Colonial South Carolina: A Historical Geography., Linda Marie Pett-Conklin Jan 1986

Cadastral Surveying In Colonial South Carolina: A Historical Geography., Linda Marie Pett-Conklin

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Colonial South Carolina's cadastral pattern evolved as the product of a variety of factors. Foremost was the ability of settlers to choose the sites of their landholdings. This authority was limited, however, by official policies that prevented settlers from determining the size, shape, and quality of land in their grants. Expressed rules for surveying riparian and inland tracts in rectangular shapes resulted in a more regular pattern of landownership than is generally assumed in a metes and bounds survey. Within the guidelines of these and other policies, colonist nonetheless were permitted to occupy land in non-contiguous tracts resulting in a …

Renter Residential Search: An Empirical Investigation In Cognition And Behaviour, Stuart Campbell Aitken Jan 1985

Renter Residential Search: An Empirical Investigation In Cognition And Behaviour, Stuart Campbell Aitken

Digitized Theses

It is believed that search constitutes an important cognitive process. Substantial research has enhanced our elemental understanding of this area of enquiry. This notwithstanding, the process of search remains little understood.;This thesis investigates the residential search behaviour of a sample of individuals who were in the process of relocating within the rental housing sector. The purpose of the study is severalfold. Firstly, it explores the distinctiveness of renter search behaviour. Secondly, it is an investigation into the links between cognition and overt behaviour. Thirdly, it describes groupings of like-minded individuals within the renter sector. Finally, it reveals how renters construe …

Changes In Hutterite House Types: The Material Expression Of The Contradiction Between "Being-On-The-Colony" And "Being-In-The-World" (Communitarian, Utopias, Marxism, Interactionism)., John Ian Francis Melland Jan 1985

Changes In Hutterite House Types: The Material Expression Of The Contradiction Between "Being-On-The-Colony" And "Being-In-The-World" (Communitarian, Utopias, Marxism, Interactionism)., John Ian Francis Melland

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

In Hutterite society, tradition has dictated "what ought to be." This view of reality emphasizes simple living and avoidance of the world and is reflected in ascetic colony housing. However, as more areas of Hutterite life change in response to attempts to increase economic production, it is difficult to maintain avoidance as an ideal. As the gap between "idea and reality" increases, tradition is undermined, and on many colonies, normative validity claims are no longer unquestionable. Consequently, colony leaders are now confronted with demands for participation and collective consumption, especially for modern and more-private housing. This study explains how Hutterite …

A New Topography: Elizabeth Bishop's Late Poems, Jennifer Soalt Jan 1985

A New Topography: Elizabeth Bishop's Late Poems, Jennifer Soalt

Honors Papers

Geography III, the title of Elizabeth Bishop's last book of poems prepares her readers for both a passage through familiar territory and an exploration of unmapped terrain. A return to the northern landscape of A Cold Spring and the southern landscape of Brazil is promised at the same time that a third and entirely new landscape is hinted at; we can find the Nova Scotia of "At the Fishouses" and "Cape Breton" in "The Moose" and "The End of March" and we can find the tropics of "Song for the Rainy Season" and "The Armadillo" in "Crusoe in England", but …

Ii. My Life, Maurice E. Perret

Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter

In a high valley of the Jura Mountains, La Chaux-de-Fonds, Canton of Neuchatel, is the center of watchmaking. It is the city where I was born, 19 May 1911. My passion for travel, geography, history, railroads, maps, is inherited. Among the family papers on my father's side I found a little yellow book titled "Expenses during the travel in Italy" and dated 1799. It contains the schedule of the stagecoaches between cities in Italy and among the expenses are purchases of one map of the Cisalpine Republic, another map and the History of Rome by the Latin historian Polybius. Bungalow Neighborhoods Of North Omaha., Patrick A. Peters Jul 1984

Bungalow Neighborhoods Of North Omaha., Patrick A. Peters

Student Work

Omaha, Nebraska, not unlike numerous other towns and cities throughout the United States, experienced a period of tremendous growth during the early decades of this century. Changes in industrial technology, an increasing work force, and innovative intra-urban transportation networks combined to bring a new look to the city. The bungalow-style house is one of many house styles which, in identifying its stylistic elements, location, and distribution within a city, offers insight into urban growth and elements of popular taste. Studying the single-family home generates information which may help guide geographers to the essence of the urban landscape, both past and …

Geography And Law, Bernhard Grossfeld May 1984

Geography And Law, Bernhard Grossfeld

Michigan Law Review

The central questions of comparative law are still unsolved: Which legal institutions in what legal cultures can be compared with each other in a meaningful way? What can we learn from comparative law for the solution of our own problems?

This Article will discuss the relations between geography and law. I have already discussed the subject of language and law elsewhere; with regard to religion and law, I refer the reader to the extensive writings of Harold Berman.

Issues Concerning Phreatophyte Clearing, Revegetation, And Water Savings Along The Gila River, Arizona, William L. Graf, Duncan T. Patten, Bonnie Turner Apr 1984

Issues Concerning Phreatophyte Clearing, Revegetation, And Water Savings Along The Gila River, Arizona, William L. Graf, Duncan T. Patten, Bonnie Turner

Faculty Publications

A detailed analysis of the published results of the U. S. Geological Survey Phreatophyte Project conducted in the area of interest for the Corps of Engineers Camelsback Dam study provides the following results. It appears that the figure of 18.53 inches per year for water savings from phreatophyte clearing along the Gila River in southeast Arizona should not be used for predicting potential water salvage because of large sampling errors, measurement errors, and the inherent variability of the natural processes of evapotranspiration. An extensive literature review shows that no dependable values are available for the Gila River project area. It …

Pattern, Structure And Formation Of Activity Space In Hinterland Resorts: A Study Of Barbados, Winston Carlyle Husbands Jan 1984

Pattern, Structure And Formation Of Activity Space In Hinterland Resorts: A Study Of Barbados, Winston Carlyle Husbands

Digitized Theses

This thesis seeks to uncover the factors, regularities, and tendencies which govern and describe activity space pattern, structure, and formation in small tourism-dependent areas of the world economic periphery (hinterland resorts). Tourist/resident socio-spatial relations are viewed in the context of activity participation, the patronage of attractions, and the social profiles of tourists and residents. It is considered important that the nature of international tourism presents a special problem in the investigation of activity space; the massive influx of metropolitan visitors to hinterland resorts dramatises and localises the First World-Third World relationship. The activity spaces of tourists and residents, based on …

House Price Change, Residential Mobility And Filtering: Metropolitan Toronto, 1970 - 1979, Joseph Henry Springer Jan 1984

House Price Change, Residential Mobility And Filtering: Metropolitan Toronto, 1970 - 1979, Joseph Henry Springer

Digitized Theses

Studies of residential mobility and filtering have focussed on the physical and causal aspects of movement, and the variations in the cost and quality of housing services that accompany these changes. Sharp fluctuation in house prices, especially the kind produced by a speculative bubble, can affect the timing and quantity of housing purchased. This theme is developed in this study by examining the impact of house price change on patterns of residential mobility and filtering in Metropolitan Toronto during the period 1970-1979.;The examination of the manner in which price changes affected the accumulation of capital gains reveals that during periods …

Manipur In Transition: Differentials Of Development In A Polyethnic Area Of India., Kiran Banga Chhokar Jan 1984

Manipur In Transition: Differentials Of Development In A Polyethnic Area Of India., Kiran Banga Chhokar

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The present study seeks to investigate the processes of socio-economic change that have affected the major ethnic groups in Manipur, mainly the subsistence level tribals and the Meitei peasantry; the strategies adopted by these groups, and individuals within the groups, to cope with the changed environment; and the spatial expression of these processes of change in varying patterns of development. Manipur, a polyethnic state in northeastern India, is currently the scene of hostilities among the different ethnic groups. The study tests the hypothesis that the underlying cause of these conflicts is the difference in the levels of development of the …

Agricultural Change Among The Alto Mayo Aguaruna, Eastern Peru: The Effects On Culture And Environment., Martha Adrienne Teresa Works Jan 1984

Agricultural Change Among The Alto Mayo Aguaruna, Eastern Peru: The Effects On Culture And Environment., Martha Adrienne Teresa Works

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The Aguaruna Indians of the Alto Mayo Valley of tropical eastern Peru are experiencing economic change as Spanish speaking colo- nists from the temperate highlands immigrate and begin intensive rice cultivation. The Aguaruna, subsisting until recently on hunting, gathering, and horticulture, are now being exposed to dramatically different ideas about land, agriculture, and technology. Economic change, as expressed by modification of agricultural patterns, reflects an area of close interaction between man and the environment. With the acceptance of rice cultivation among some Aguaruna in the Alto Mayo Valley a marked departure from traditional agricultural patterns has begun to emerge. Increased …

The Boundary Definition Problem: Statistical And Geometric Approaches, Richard Averack Jan 1983

The Boundary Definition Problem: Statistical And Geometric Approaches, Richard Averack

Digitized Theses

The boundary definition problem involves the selection of appropriate criteria and methods for portraying boundaries of geographical distributions. Although this is a very important consideration in many academic fields, particularly geography, biology and sociology, apparently very little attention has been devoted to it in the literature. Boundaries are, as a rule, rather carelessly and subjectively drawn.;Various approaches to bounding discrete point distributions are explored in this thesis. These approaches fall into two categories based on the amount of information available about the distribution. In some caes, only locations are known and a boundary must be defined based soley on the …

A Dynamic Assimilation Model: Selected First-Generation Arab-Canadians, Mohammed Saleh Jan 1983

A Dynamic Assimilation Model: Selected First-Generation Arab-Canadians, Mohammed Saleh

Digitized Theses

The dissertation examines the process of Arab assimilation in Canada. Data was gathered by bilingual (Arabic/English) questionnaires. The author used a multidisciplinary approach to present assimilation as a process of psychosocial spatial transformation.;The contribution of the dissertation is a molecular assimilation model which integrates three parts: spatial interaction, assimilation and identity change. The model parts are totally interrelated allowing for dynamic feedbacks, multicyclic operation and continuous transformation. The application of the model led to a greater appreciation of the molecular and dynamic nature of assimilation.;Assimilation molecularity is recognized by discovering the assimilation molecules: intercultural events. They are the interacting subsystems …

Structure And Inter-Relations Of The Land, Labour, Credit And Product Markets Of South Kanara: A Study Of A Backward Agricultural Economy., K. Nagaraj Dr. Feb 1982

Structure And Inter-Relations Of The Land, Labour, Credit And Product Markets Of South Kanara: A Study Of A Backward Agricultural Economy., K. Nagaraj Dr.

Doctoral Theses

South Kanara is a predominantly rural and agricultural district in the state of Karnataka in South India, given largely to the cultivation of a single subsistence crop (paddy) which accounts for nearly 70 per cent of its gross cropped area. The agricultural technology is Primitive, with little use of 'modern' inputs like chemical fertilisers, HYV seeds etc. There are no large scale or modern industries in the district. The little manufacturing activities that exist are mostly of the primary processing type, carried out in small establishments and households. There is however, rather high incidence of the so-called 'tertiary' activities like …

Entropy Maximization, Information Minimization And Population Potential: Joint Considerations, James Albert Pooler Jan 1982

Entropy Maximization, Information Minimization And Population Potential: Joint Considerations, James Albert Pooler

Digitized Theses

The dissertation presents joint considerations of the concepts of (1) entropy maximization and population potential and (2) information minimization and population potential.;In order to calculate population potential it is necessary to determine the probability that a randomly selected individual at one location will have a spatial interation at another location. The methods of maximum entropy and minimum information provide a means for estimating such probabilities. Population potential is closely related to, and derivable from, spatial interaction and this allows an indirect connection to be made between population potential and the methods of maximum entropy and minimum information. This is, therefore, …

The Evolution Of Agricultural Land Use Patterns In The State Of Bahia, Brazil, Sonia De Leao Jan 1982

The Evolution Of Agricultural Land Use Patterns In The State Of Bahia, Brazil, Sonia De Leao

Digitized Theses

This dissertation deals with the historical spatial analysis of agriculture of Bahia, the earliest economic core of Brazil. Emphasis is on the economic processes responsible for the expansion and location of agriculture from colonization in 1549 until 1970. The conceptual framework is von Thunen's classic model of agricultural location, which was chosen because it contains predictions (under equilibrium and dynamic conditions) related to both the evolution and location of agriculture.;Comparison between Bahia's agricultural reality and theoretical conditions of "The Isolated State" employs the method of comparative statics, whereby the time is divided into four stages, each one in succession treated …
