Sensors scan the ground below a nd to either side of the satellite platform and as the platform noves forward, an image of the earths surface is formed.A satellite …
An Updated Phylogenetic Classification Of The Flowering Plants, Robert F. Thorne
An Updated Phylogenetic Classification Of The Flowering Plants, Robert F. Thorne
Aliso: A Journal of Systematic and Floristic Botany
This update of my classification of the flowering plants, or Angiospermae, is based upon about 800 pertinent books, monographs, and other botanical papers published since my last synopsis appeared in the Nordic Journal of Science in 1983. Also I have narrowed my family- and ordinal-gap concepts to bring acceptance of family and ordinal limits more in line with those of current taxonomists. This new information and the shift in my phylogenetic philosophy have caused significant changes in my interpretation of relationships and numbers and content of taxa. Also the ending "-anae" has been accepted for superorders in place in the …

Improving The Awareness Of The Influence Of Geography Upon Historical Events In Ancient Mesopotamia And In Ancient Egypt In Ninth Grade World History Students, Henry B. Milton
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
This practicum was designed to incorporate the study of geography into a ninth grade world history with the aim of improving a student’s awareness of the influence of geography upon the historical development of ancient Mesopotamia and ancient Egypt. By means of a questionnaire and map tests prepared by the writer, it was determined that ninth grade world history students had little awareness of the influence of geography upon historical development in ancient Mesopotamia and ancient Egypt, and could not locate those places regarded as being historically significant in either of those two ancient civilizations.
During the course of implementation, …

Evolving Policies And Institutional Arrangements In The Canadian Agri-Food Industry: An Analysis Of Differential Development Between The Dairy And Beef Livestock Sectors, Quentin P. Chiotti
Evolving Policies And Institutional Arrangements In The Canadian Agri-Food Industry: An Analysis Of Differential Development Between The Dairy And Beef Livestock Sectors, Quentin P. Chiotti
Digitized Theses
This thesis examines the evolving policies and institutional arrangements in the Canadian agri-food industry; specifically an analysis of differential development between the dairy and beef livestock sectors. Moving beyond the pluralist and other alternative explanations for the development of marketing boards, an integrative theoretical framework which incorporates a broader conceptual and theoretical approach was adopted to investigate the role of producers, agribusiness and the state in the agricultural policy-making process for each agri-food sector. Two specific periods of conflict were examined, which represented significant attempts to introduce a marketing board as a means to resolve a crisis that was afflicting …
Female Farm Operators, Gender Relations And The Restructuring Canadian Agricultural System, Gloria Jean Leckie
Female Farm Operators, Gender Relations And The Restructuring Canadian Agricultural System, Gloria Jean Leckie
Digitized Theses
It is widely recognized that the practice of agriculture is a highly gendered activity, with traditional roles for women centring around the concept of the agricultural helpmate. The most non-traditional role played by women is that of a farm owner or operator, directing a farming venture. This group has become more noticeable as agricultural restructuring progresses and the number of male farmers declines, yet relatively little detailed information exists about them, or the farms they operate. Furthermore, relatively little is known about how the traditional gender relations of agriculture influence the daily lives of female farmers, who must live and …

Financial Assistance And The Spatial Development Of Tourism In Ontario, Thomas D. Hinch
Financial Assistance And The Spatial Development Of Tourism In Ontario, Thomas D. Hinch
Digitized Theses
Tourism and its impacts are characterized by spatial variation. Recognizing this, governments have actively tried to influence the location of tourism development in an attempt to capture perceived benefits associated with tourism. One of the most direct approaches used has been the provision of financial assistance to investors in areas targeted for regional development. Unfortunately, the theoretical understanding of the spatial process associated with tourism development has not kept pace with the practice of intervention into this development process. The intent of this thesis is, therefore, to provide insights into the process of the spatial development of tourism in Ontario …

Lehi And El Niño: A Method Of Migration, David L. Clark
BYU Studies
David L. Clark combines what historians know about the migration of Lehi and his family to the Promised Land (from Arabia to the New World) with historical climate and weather patterns and currents in the Indian and Pacific Oceans. He discusses why Lehi, and later Nephi, may have chosen a certain path and timing to get to the Promised Land.

Disparities In Development: A Case Study Of Karnataka State (India)., Jayalaxmi Jayaram Dr.
Disparities In Development: A Case Study Of Karnataka State (India)., Jayalaxmi Jayaram Dr.
Doctoral Theses
The Five Year Plans have recognised the need to bridge the developmental disparities across the regions and have formulated strategies for accelerated development of backward are as. However, the widening disparities between a few highly developed centres and vast areas of under development only bring out the inadequacies of the plans which are yet to integrate the resources of a region to its people. This study is an attempt to understand the spatial processes and patterns of development which offer an explanation to the intra/inter-regional contrasts in development. The study while high-lighting the importance of the Spatial approach has, in …

The Geography Of Book Of Mormon Events: A Sourcebook, John L. Sorenson
Maxwell Institute Publications
Introduction
The subject of "Book of Mormon geography" has stimulated three different responses among Latter-day Saints over the years. On the part of Church authorities caution, if not anxiety, has prevailed. For a minority of members the reaction has been persistent curiosity. Meanwhile a large majority have been satisfied to ignore the matter.
Historic Changes In Channel Morphology Of Mississippi River Tributaries: Southwestern Mississippi., Elaine Grace Yodis
Historic Changes In Channel Morphology Of Mississippi River Tributaries: Southwestern Mississippi., Elaine Grace Yodis
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This study assesses the geomorphological changes to the fluvial systems of two rivers in southwestern Mississippi that have been foreshortened. Channel foreshortening in the lower reaches of these rivers is similar to a lowering of base level and causes a steepening of the channel gradient which leads to channel incision, bank erosion and increased sediment load. Analysis of historical and modern data and a comparison with three unmodified rivers in the same physiographic region, provide an estimate of the magnitude and rate that such disturbances are transmitted through the fluvial system. Degradation and channel instability of the Homochitto River and …
The Akulmiut: Territorial Dimensions Of A Yup'ik Eskimo Society, Elizabeth Frances Andrews
The Akulmiut: Territorial Dimensions Of A Yup'ik Eskimo Society, Elizabeth Frances Andrews
Anthropology
This monograph is an ethnohistoric and ethnographic study of 19th and 20th century land and resource use of the Akulmiut, a Yup'ik-speaking Eskimo society that occupied the inland tundra region between the Yukon and Kuskokwim rivers of western Alaska. The study examines the relationship between the patterns of spatial organization and wild resource utilization and resource distribution. Ethnographic studies have shown there is considerable variability in socioterritorial organization, which according to one recent theory, applied to this study, can be accounted for by examining the distribution of critical food resources in terms of density and predictability. The Akulmiut were selected …

Further, investors located in particular …
Coverage And Visibility Problems On Topographic Surfaces, Jay Lee
Coverage And Visibility Problems On Topographic Surfaces, Jay Lee
Digitized Theses
This thesis discusses and defines visibility coverage problems by using visibility information derived from topographic surfaces. Algorithms for extracting visibility information are developed and tested on both randomly generated and real topographic surfaces to solve visibility coverage problems, such as the determination of visible regions for specific viewpoints, the determination of a minimal set of viewpoints to see the entire surface. Problems are also extended to the cases of viewpoints whose heights are allowed to vary.;A triangulated irregular network (TIN) model was selected to represent topographic surfaces in this study. A drop heuristic algorithm for extracting TIN models from grid …
Woodfuel Use In Ghana: Its Nature And Impact At The Village Level, William Yaw Osei
Woodfuel Use In Ghana: Its Nature And Impact At The Village Level, William Yaw Osei
Digitized Theses
The thesis is an examination of the woodfuel energy situation in rural Ghana. Despite the high degree of woodfuel dependency, which may perpetuate a near-subsistence level of economic development and potential degradation of the environment, there is a lack of detailed information at the critical use levels of the farm village and its household units upon which to assess the situation and as a basis for energy planning. This thesis attempts to combine the need for detailed data acquisition and the need to describe and explain the actual woodfuel situation. The field study covered households in three villages in Eastern …

A Program For Improving Student Achievement In The Geography Related Performance Standards Of The American History Curriculum, Michael C. Richardson
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
The program involved the development of materials for the instruction and testing of geography related performance standards to the American History curriculum. The program’s aim were twofold: 1) to assist the teacher in that materials were not available and 2) to address the problem of low achievement of the students in their basic geographical knowledge and its application to American History. The problems addressed by this practicum were identified by both teacher questionnaire and student pre-tests. Over nine-week period, students constructed a historical atlas of maps which correlated with the students/ regular history studies. Students also received a study guide …
