Location Of Foreign Direct Investment In Peoples Republic Of China, 1979--1993: Application Of A New Locational Framework, Tao Qu Jan 1996

Location Of Foreign Direct Investment In Peoples Republic Of China, 1979--1993: Application Of A New Locational Framework, Tao Qu

Digitized Theses

This thesis addresses the spatial dimension of foreign direct investment (FDI) with a subnational context with reference to the P.R. China during the period of 1979-1993. The framework for the location of FDI within a subnational context includes three dimensions: (1) the dimension of firm specific variables (FSVs), (2) the dimension of location specific variables (LSVs), and (3) the temporal and dynamic dimension. Within this framework, the general locational models of FDI in China are built, the dynamic changes over time examined, and the effects of country of origin tested. This research also takes the initiative to examine the locational …

Household Responses To The Environmental Problem, Shouchao Fu Jan 1996

Household Responses To The Environmental Problem, Shouchao Fu

Digitized Theses

This study examines household responses to The Environmental Problem (TEP). TEP is a conceptualization of the complex of natural and human forces and processes that threaten irreversible destruction, degradation, and contamination of earth-sustaining conditions. TEP represents any or all environmental conditions of concern to human beings, at whatever scale, in whatever form(s), exceeding natural recovery capacities. Human beings are taken to be an integral part of the environment, exerting a distinctive environmental force.;Cluster analysis was used to define five separate and socioeconomically distinctive neighborhoods in London, Ontario, from which by stratified random sampling, 300 households were selected. Global Action Plan …

Ecological Farm Practices And The Family Farm, Julie Anne Greenwood Jan 1996

Ecological Farm Practices And The Family Farm, Julie Anne Greenwood

Digitized Theses

The sustainability of modern agricultural systems is increasingly questioned due to evidence of environmental and economic problems. While some people propose solutions within conventional production systems, others suggest that there is a need to completely modify production systems based on ecological principles. The basic principles and differences between the two production systems have been well specified at a conceptual level, but less is known about the differences in production practices, social and structural organisation, and decision-making processes leading to the use of particular methods at an operational level. In this thesis thirty ecological and thirty conventional farmers in Southwestern Ontario …

Sanctuary, Redlight Districts, And Washington, D.C.: Some Observations On Neuman's Anomalous Zones (Symposium: Surveying Law And Borders), William I. Miller Jan 1996

Sanctuary, Redlight Districts, And Washington, D.C.: Some Observations On Neuman's Anomalous Zones (Symposium: Surveying Law And Borders), William I. Miller

Articles

The claim is often made that boundaries obviate disputes if they are clear. But boundaries are inseparable from disputes; they seem to invite them as much as obviate them. Note how natural the collocations "disputed boundary" and "boundary dispute" are. The conventional view that one hears a lot in law schools is that once a bright line is drawn then a boundary is "settled." But that supposes that a clear boundary need not be defended or continually justified or that internal changes in the entity it circumscribes and in some ways defines do not affect the integrity of the boundary. …

Geodemographic Approaches To Identifying U.S. Furniture Markets, Frank M. Howell, Larry Doolittle, Jarryl B. Ritchie, Melissa A. Barfield, Steven H. Bullard Aug 1995

Geodemographic Approaches To Identifying U.S. Furniture Markets, Frank M. Howell, Larry Doolittle, Jarryl B. Ritchie, Melissa A. Barfield, Steven H. Bullard

Faculty Publications

Demand for household furniture is shaped by a multitude of dynamic forces, from the global economic situation to subtle changes in consumer preferences. Correspondingly, the academic disciplines employed to identify, analyze, and predict these forces range from macroeconomics to psychology, and include demography, sociology, geography, and several applied fields. The demographic characteristics of furniture consumers has been a particularly popular area of research, primarily because of the availability of secondary data from various public · agencies. Some of this research is reviewed in a subsequent section of this report.

Reconstruction Of Neets'aii Gwich'in Land Use: A Methodological Study., John Carl Peirce Apr 1995

Reconstruction Of Neets'aii Gwich'in Land Use: A Methodological Study., John Carl Peirce

Anthropology

This thesis attempts to determine to what extent land use patterns for the Neets'aii Gwich'in of Alaska can be spatially reconstructed from existing sources. Written narratives are reviewed, such as those related by explorers, missionaries, traders and prospectors, for information on land use. Also reviewed are data that give a broad array of subsistence, demographic, geographical or other relevant information concerning land use, including biological and geological reports, economic studies, census reports, Neets'aii Gwich'in oral narratives, archaeological studies, ethnographic studies, place name studies and maps, and land use and occupancy studies. Methodological models for gathering land use data are reviewed …

Were There Two Cumorahs?, Sidney B. Sperry Jan 1995

Were There Two Cumorahs?, Sidney B. Sperry

Journal of Book of Mormon Studies

No one doubts that the hill where Joseph Smith received the plates is known as Cumorah, but is the hill where the final battles between the Nephites and Lamanites took place another Cumorah? The book of Ether tells us that Omer traveled to this place of the last battles of the Nephites, and that the relatively short duration of this journey would not account for the three thousand miles from Middle America to New York. A similar journey was undertaken by Limhi’s men, of equally short duration. The description of the geographical features around the final battle site is also …

Preliminary Evidence For The Existence Of A Regional Sacbe Across The Northern Maya Lowlands, Scott L. Fedick, D. Reid, Jennifer P. Mathews Jan 1995

Preliminary Evidence For The Existence Of A Regional Sacbe Across The Northern Maya Lowlands, Scott L. Fedick, D. Reid, Jennifer P. Mathews

Sociology & Anthropology Faculty Research

Ancient road systems have often been used by archaeologists to reconstruct interaction and political ties among prehistoric settlements. Roads built by the ancient Maya offer many insights into the political geography of the area, particularly in the northern lowlands where hieroglyphic texts are rare. This study examines ethnohistoric, historic, and archaeological data that suggest that a regional road, some 300 km in length, once spanned the northern lowlands from the modern location of Mérida to the east coast facing the island of Cozumel. The political implications of such a road, if it once existed, are discussed.

Canada's Multinationals: A Study In Outward Foreign Direct Investment, Stephen Paul Meyer Jan 1995

Canada's Multinationals: A Study In Outward Foreign Direct Investment, Stephen Paul Meyer

Digitized Theses

Regarding the foreign direct investment (FDI) situation in Canada, most of the attention has historically been centred on incoming rather than outgoing controlling capital. Yet, the activities of Canada-based multinational enterprises (MNEs) have fostered an impressive outflow of direct investment abroad to foreign localities.;To appreciate the importance of Canada's MNEs, it is compulsory to understand the spatial and functional characteristics of Canadian parent companies and their foreign direct investments. To realize this goal, a sizeable sample of over 20,000 examples of Canadian FDI (at various points in time) has been retrieved and subsequently agglomerated into a data set. From there, …

Exploration Of Partitioned State Tourism: The Example Of Partitioned China, Baodi Mao Jan 1995

Exploration Of Partitioned State Tourism: The Example Of Partitioned China, Baodi Mao

Digitized Theses

The European political state system has spread throughout the world and has become the predominant geo-political organization. However, the recent partitioning of states have generated a type of abnormal political entities: partitioned states. These partitioned states have serious implications for tourism development. Despite the uncertainty created by political strife and subdivision, many people continue to travel between partitioned states. Economic necessity, religious obligations, family ties, political negotiations, and pleasure are all relevant motivations driving the movement of people between these partitioned states. However, there is a substantial lack of systematic research on the movement of tourists between divided partitioned states. …

Salmon Aquaculture In Shetland And New Brunswick: A Comparative Study Of Resource Regimes Within A Moral Perspective, Craig Fergus Millar Jan 1995

Salmon Aquaculture In Shetland And New Brunswick: A Comparative Study Of Resource Regimes Within A Moral Perspective, Craig Fergus Millar

Digitized Theses

Development is a process of transformation within and among decision-making institutions. The oceans are a commons; the necessary institutions for resource management are organized within nation-state regimes and community-based regimes.;A morality is a framework of ethics governing participation in institutions and associated regimes. As social institutions, technology and property are moralities. Aquaculture, as new technology requiring the establishment of private property rights in a commons, is a development especially sensitive to the moral dimension.;Salmon aquaculturists in Shetland and New Brunswick use the same technology and exhibit very similar production profiles. Salmon farmers in Shetland have established themselves within a property …

Sustainability And Canada's National Parks: Suitability For Policy, Planning And Management, Stephen William Boyd Jan 1995

Sustainability And Canada's National Parks: Suitability For Policy, Planning And Management, Stephen William Boyd

Digitized Theses

As a term, sustainability has often come to be adopted as the 'panacea' for many problems without any clear understanding that the solutions will vary given the nature of the problem, the scale involved and the goals and objectives set out. As a result, what has emerged in the literature has been many different 'pictures' of sustainability, all of which may be relevant in certain contexts. This research examined the potential of the concept within the context of Canadian national parks. Emphasis was directed toward understanding, through the perceptions of 'expert' groups knowledgeable about parks, the key elements needed to …

Discussion And Measurement Of Soil Erosion In Iceland, Kimberly Jane Richardson May 1994

Discussion And Measurement Of Soil Erosion In Iceland, Kimberly Jane Richardson

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

Soil erosion has occurred since the beginning of time. It is a natural process, but one that has been increasing at an alarming rate. Once soil is eroded--whether it is blown out to sea or washed down a river to sedimentize a lake--it is lost. It is almost impossible to reestablish similar soil components and characteristics in a given system. Since soil and vegetation reestablishment is expensive, the prevention of soil erosion by controlling its causes has become the most cost-effective reclamation effort.

After spending six months in Iceland, I wrote this paper on the unique erosion problems facing that …

Evaluation Of Yukon Environmental Assessment Interest Representation, Mark Vincent Prystupa Jan 1994

Evaluation Of Yukon Environmental Assessment Interest Representation, Mark Vincent Prystupa

Digitized Theses

Conflict is inherent in resource management. To effectively alleviate or eliminate interest incompatibilities, public policy processes must provide adequate opportunities for the representation of interests by concerned parties. The difficulty lies in ascertaining successful means of incorporating various interests into the decision-making process. Yet, to date, there has been little attention to what works, where, and why.;Evaluation may serve to remedy this problem by serving the dual functions of generating knowledge and improving practice. Models of the evaluation of interest representation were reviewed. None were found adequate to present needs. A new evaluative framework was developed that incorporated the properties …

The Geography Of Canadian Inventions: An Urban And Regional Analysis Between 1975 And 1989, S L. Ceh Jan 1994

The Geography Of Canadian Inventions: An Urban And Regional Analysis Between 1975 And 1989, S L. Ceh

Digitized Theses

An analysis of Canadian patent, industrial directory and census data can distinguish and explain inventive patterns in Canada between 1975 and 1989. Such an analysis is needed to update and expand the geography of invention literature, because few studies examine the many varied characteristics of Canadian inventive regions and firms.;An examination of about 90 percent of Canada's patented inventions in 1975, 1981 and 1989 provided a temporal understanding about the relative amount of inventive activity in Canadian regions at the firm and entrepreneurial level. Further, geographic information about the number and types of inventions traded by Canada is analyzed for …

An Activities-Based Analysis Of The Space-Time Characteristics Of Tourist Travel: The Lions Of Shetland, Scotland, David A. Fennell Jan 1994

An Activities-Based Analysis Of The Space-Time Characteristics Of Tourist Travel: The Lions Of Shetland, Scotland, David A. Fennell

Digitized Theses

This study evolved as a response to the dearth of empirically-based research within the realm of island tourism. It is an attempt to combine a broad range of geographical concepts (space, time, location, perception, regions, and impacts) in achieving a more holistic understanding of tourist group travel in the region of Shetland, Scotland, through a proposed theoretical model. A total of 100 questionnaire packages were distributed in the study area, with a response rate of 71 percent. Respondents were placed into one of two groups contingent upon their activity-based interests: Special Interest (birders, fishers, history/archaeology, natural history, and "other", n …

Biomass Fuel Supply And Utilization In The Cities Of The Developing World: A Case Study Of Cebu City, Philippines, Terrence Gerard Bensel Jan 1994

Biomass Fuel Supply And Utilization In The Cities Of The Developing World: A Case Study Of Cebu City, Philippines, Terrence Gerard Bensel

Doctoral Dissertations

The island Province of Cebu is generally considered to represent one of the worst cases of extreme environmental degradation in the Southeast Asian region. Widespread dependence on woodfuels (biomass) by the island's 2.7 million inhabitants is often pointed to as a major cause of Cebu's environmental problems, prompting government and NGO officials in the region to call for tighter restrictions and regulation of the commercial woodfuel trade.

This dissertation was designed to assess the economic and environmental impact of woodfuel production and use in Cebu by focusing on three aspects of the local woodfuel system. First, a household energy survey …

A Water Balance Evaluation Of The Effects Of Climate Variability And Human Modification On The Flow Regime Of The Mississippi River, 1932-1988., Judy Lee Hoff Jan 1994

A Water Balance Evaluation Of The Effects Of Climate Variability And Human Modification On The Flow Regime Of The Mississippi River, 1932-1988., Judy Lee Hoff

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Human activities affecting runoff and streamflow within the Mississippi River drainage basin have been and continue to be significant. Since the disastrous flood of 1927, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has established an extensive regulatory system for flood control purposes and navigational benefits. Along with these river system modifications, significant landscape alterations have occurred within the basin as a result of cultural and economical development. In light of the dramatic Midwest flood of 1993, it becomes increasingly necessary to understand the comprehensive relationship between streamflow, climatic variability, and human-induced change within the overall drainage basin. A water balance methodology …

Basic Methodological Problems With The Anti-Mormon Approach To The Geography And Archaeology Of The Book Of Mormon, William J. Hamblin Jan 1993

Basic Methodological Problems With The Anti-Mormon Approach To The Geography And Archaeology Of The Book Of Mormon, William J. Hamblin

Journal of Book of Mormon Studies

Anti-Mormon criticisms of the Book of Mormon are frequently based on a questionable set of assumptions concerning the nature of historical and archaeological evidence, the role of governing presuppositions, and the nature of historical proof. Using arguments found in a recent anti-Mormon critique by Luke Wilson as a foundation, this article analyzes difficulties of reconstructing ancient geographies, problems with the discontinuity of Mesoamerican toponyms, the historical development of the idea of a limited geography model, and challenges of textual and artifactual interpretation when trying to relate the Book of Mormon to archaeological remains.

Software Review: Atlas *018, Robert D. Wilson

Journal of International Information Management

Atlas*015 (AGIS) from Strategic Mapping Inc., is more than a sophisticated graphical database or mapping program for the personal computer. It is software that performs complex spatial analyses of data within a geographical framework. A geographic information system (CIS), gives the user the ability to associate virtually any event or transaction with a geographic location. From there sophisticated analyses of your data can be conducted. GISs go far beyond the more common thematic mapping programs.

Suburban Land Constraints And Intraurban Income Distribution, Timothy J. Bailey Jan 1993

Suburban Land Constraints And Intraurban Income Distribution, Timothy J. Bailey

Digitized Theses

This dissertation examines the effect of space restrictions on the intraurban distribution of socioeconomic groups. It proposes that the centripetal income shifts evident in North American cities with suburban containment can be explained in part within the context of traditional neoclassical theory. A model is introduced to predict the residential location pattern in a metropolitan center when suburban land consumption constraints and a polycentric urban form are incorporated into the Alonso budget equation (Alonso, 1964). In this model two things happen to higher socioeconomic groups with a fixing of the size of new lots; the accessibility variable rises in relative …

A Geographical Semiotic Analysis Of Four Damascene Residential Neighbourhoods: Spatial Design And Behavioural Relations, M Salim Ferwati Jan 1993

A Geographical Semiotic Analysis Of Four Damascene Residential Neighbourhoods: Spatial Design And Behavioural Relations, M Salim Ferwati

Digitized Theses

Urban environments are geographical semiotic information systems represented by neighbourhood layouts, organization of streets and house designs. These geographic features form statements of and contexts for different socio-cultural functions and behaviourial patterns. Geographical semiotic information systems as expressed by urban environments are necessary means by which individuals and groups learn, use, and evaluate their urban environment. This dissertation examines these ideas as a basis for analysis of samples of four different neighbourhood designs in Damascus, Syria.;Analyses and comparison of examples of four urban environments in Damascus called Traditional house neighbourhoods, Attached apartment neighbourhoods, Detached apartment areas, and Elevator apartments are …

Digitized Theses

This dissertation examines the perceptions of the effects of community change by residents in a small town. Industries are more frequently locating in smaller communities. The research presented here explores how residents of a small town perceive the effects of selected types of change, including the introduction of a large industry, on their community and their personal lives. A set of methodologies is assessed with regards to its utility in this type of investigation. The role of group membership, social interaction, personal characteristics and the location of an enumeration area (a grouping of households) relative to an event are measured …

Gully Evolution In The Upper Delaware River Basin Northeastern Kansas, Iona L. Meyer Nov 1992

Gully Evolution In The Upper Delaware River Basin Northeastern Kansas, Iona L. Meyer

Student Work

A small gully network developed across a pasture in the Dissected Till Plain of northeastern Kansas was monitored for one year to assess gully evolution in non-loessial materials. The objectives of this investigation were to identify stable and unstable drainage elements within the gully network; identify zones of net erosion and deposition; estimate the volume of sediment removed or deposited during the monitoring period; determine rates of headcut advancement; determine processes that advance and widen gullies, and to determine the historic development of the gully network.

Portions of the gully network were measured after every rain event exceeding 1.5 cm …

A Correlation Of The Sidon River And The Lands Of Manti And Zarahemla With The Southern End Of The Rio Grijalva (San Miguel), Janet F. Hilton, John L. Hilton Jul 1992

A Correlation Of The Sidon River And The Lands Of Manti And Zarahemla With The Southern End Of The Rio Grijalva (San Miguel), Janet F. Hilton, John L. Hilton

Journal of Book of Mormon Studies

We construct a detailed geographical model of the Nephite homeland areas of Manti, Zarahemla, and the river Sidon using the Book of Mormon text of around 80 BC. This model assumes that these areas are located in Mesoamerica, that the names of their surrounding seas do not necessarily correspond to local compass directions, and that the directions stated in the text are to be understood in the nontechnical normal English sense. We then describe the southern end of the Grijalva river basin, located across the southern part of the Mexico–Guatemala border. We nominate this area as a possible candidate for …
