Exploring Masculinity And Self-Compassion, Sarelle Creesy Apr 2022

Exploring Masculinity And Self-Compassion, Sarelle Creesy

Community Engagement Student Work

This workshop taught self-compassion as a tool to mitigate effects of toxic masculinity on male youth. Males ages 16-26 were given a definition of toxic masculinity and reviewed how expectations of it are taught and reinforced through Harro’s Cycle of Socialization (2010). They then learned about Kristin Neff’s theory of self-compassion. Participants then reflected on one instance of toxic masculinity that they had faced before, either as a perpetrator or a victim of it, using one chosen element of self-compassion. One key finding included 100% of participants agreeing they could see themselves using self-compassion when facing pressures of masculinity. In …

Contextualizing Menopause In The Law, Bridget J. Crawford, Emily Gold Waldman, Naomi R. Cahn Apr 2022

Contextualizing Menopause In The Law, Bridget J. Crawford, Emily Gold Waldman, Naomi R. Cahn

Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications

“It is horrendous, but then it’s magnificent,” says one character about menopause in an episode of the 2019 Netflix comedy Fleabag. Her younger interlocutor is incredulous at this proclamation. That younger character, and even the audience, may be somewhat taken aback by this frank discussion. After all, menopause is not a subject that is commonly discussed, let alone praised. Whether among friends, acquaintances, or colleagues (fictional or not), silence about menopause is more likely the norm. This is true in the law, too. The law mostly ignores menopause.

The law’s silence about menopause is linked to a broader cultural silence …

The Effect Of Creative Art Therapy On Trauma Victims Suffering From Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, Sophia Swiatek Apr 2022

The Effect Of Creative Art Therapy On Trauma Victims Suffering From Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, Sophia Swiatek

Senior Honors Theses

When confronted with a traumatic situation, individuals’ brains often face difficulty in storing and/or processing such experiences. Unfortunately, this presents challenges for accessing those memories later in life, especially if the individuals are solely using speech-based techniques to do so. This fact has spurred research on whether various other therapeutic techniques, such as Creative Art Therapy (CAT), can produce better results in improving the mental health of a trauma victim suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). This study attempts to uncover whether age, gender, and/or type of therapy play a significant role in the improvement of CAT clients’ mental health …

The Impact Of Women And Intersectionality On Bill Success In State Legislatures, Maggie Lowrey Apr 2022

The Impact Of Women And Intersectionality On Bill Success In State Legislatures, Maggie Lowrey

Political Science Theses and Capstones

Thousands of bills are introduced in state legislatures every year and there are a multitude of reasons as to why some of those bills become law and some do not. Female sponsorship and the intersectionality of female sponsors are the focus of my research. Previous research has found variable impact of these characteristics; however, little work has been done on the combined effects of race, gender, and partisanship on bill passage rate. I tested these ideas on bills that were introduced to state legislatures of forty states in 2015 from the Harvard Dataverse1. By applying differing factors of …

Working Through Menopause, Bridget J. Crawford, Emily Gold Waldman, Naomi R. Cahn Apr 2022

Working Through Menopause, Bridget J. Crawford, Emily Gold Waldman, Naomi R. Cahn

Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications

There are over thirty million people ages 44 to 55 in the civilian labor force in the United States, but the law and legal scholarship are largely silent about a health condition that approximately half of those workers inevitably will experience. Both in the United States and elsewhere, menopause remains mostly a taboo topic, because of cultural stigmas and attitudes about aging and gender. Yet menopause raises critical issues at the intersections of gender equity, disability, aging, transgender rights, and reproductive justice. This Article imagines how the law would change if it accounted for menopause and the associated unequal burdens …

The White Man's Crime: White-Collar Crime, Gender, Race, And Age, Ashton N. Albert

Senior Theses

This paper investigates the population of white-collar crime offenders with special emphasis on race, gender, and age. Through extensive literature review, the ambiguities and evolving definitions of white-collar crime and its offenses are explored in depth. Further review of the body of research available on the topic was conducted to investigate the ‘typical’ white collar crime offender in relation to individual characteristics and explore possible explanations. Data analysis was conducted on various datasets available through the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Crime Data Explorer regarding the race, gender, and age of white-collar crime offenders in FY 2020. The analysis concluded that …

Unended Middle Passage: The Exhausted Flesh Of A Resistant Enslaved Woman, Yipu Su Apr 2022

Unended Middle Passage: The Exhausted Flesh Of A Resistant Enslaved Woman, Yipu Su

Comparative Literature M.A. Essays

The supine position that characterized the existence of the captive Africans on the slave ship, “The Brookes,” haunted the two female autobiographers of the two mid-nineteenth-century slave narratives/autobiographies this essay discusses. Both Sojourner Truth and Harriet Jacobs voluntarily adopted the supine position as their status of living when resisting sexual violence in slavery, which nevertheless exhausted their flesh. This essay draws on Hortense Spillers’ theory of flesh/body antithesis and Saidiya V. Hartman’s theory of gender construction in slavery to discuss the nature of intended exhaustion. This essay examines to what extent was the strategy of intended exhaustion efficient for both …

The Benefits Of Incorporating Comprehensive Sex Education Into A Curriculum As Early As Kindergarten, Emma Laughlin

School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects

Research has demonstrated that there are a variety of benefits that students, schools, and communities experience when comprehensive sex education is implemented. These benefits include positive changes in student mental and sexual health, positive changes in violence reduction amongst students, and positive changes in community norms. The capstone project created as a result of this research is a website that advocates for comprehensive sex education in the state of Minnesota. The website is meant to be a resource for both parents and educators to learn about comprehensive curriculum, the current sex education standards and where they are lacking, and to …

Esports And Title Ix: Addressing Scholarship Distribution Across Gender Lines In Collegiate Esports Programs, Adam Martin Apr 2022

Esports And Title Ix: Addressing Scholarship Distribution Across Gender Lines In Collegiate Esports Programs, Adam Martin

Brigham Young University Prelaw Review

Since its implementation in 1972, Title IX protects people in the United States from discrimination on the basis of sex under any education program or activity receiving federal financial assistance. Currently, women do not receive scholarship funds from universities with esports programs proportionate to their overall participation in esports. The Department of Education’s Office of Civil rights, which oversees Title IX implementation, currently does not have a concrete definition for “sport.” Instead, they evaluate any given activity as a “sport” under Title IX on a case-by- case basis using the following three criteria: whether or not the activity has a …

Through a careful comparison of male and female writers, the author analyzes defining factors that effect the final product of each novel.

Androgyny In The Ancient World: The Intersection Of Politics, Religion And Gender In The Art Of Hatshepsut, Megan N. Reimer Apr 2022

Androgyny In The Ancient World: The Intersection Of Politics, Religion And Gender In The Art Of Hatshepsut, Megan N. Reimer

Student Publications

The Pharaoh Hatshepsut is one of the most well-known rulers of ancient Egypt and she has fascinated historians for decades. She ruled Egypt during the 15th century BCE, coming to power after the death of her husband, Thutmose II. Hatshepsut is particularly interesting to historians due to how she was portrayed in her art. Due to how far in the past she ruled, not many pieces of her art have survived; however, in the objects that we do have she is often shown very androgynously or even in came cases distinctly masculine. My research focuses on the many theories as …

Female Victimization In The 1970s And 1980s Slasher Film, Sarah Lukowski Apr 2022

Female Victimization In The 1970s And 1980s Slasher Film, Sarah Lukowski

Undergraduate Theses and Capstone Projects

To examine this portrayal of women in 1970s and 1980s slashers, I will first provide background on the genre using the influential films The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974) and Halloween (1978), and from there I will define the genre in accordance with its characteristics and formulaic conventions. Clover’s groundbreaking work (1987; 1992), offers a feminist perspective on slasher films and will provide substantial evidence throughout my paper. Then, I will compare and contrast multiple content analyses from the 1980s to the 2000s that use empirical studies to evaluate the degree to which women are victimized in slashers by the …

An Analysis Of Commentary In Men’S And Women’S Olympic Basketball, Madison Monk Apr 2022

An Analysis Of Commentary In Men’S And Women’S Olympic Basketball, Madison Monk

Honors Projects

The objectification theory suggests that women are subjected to more comments about their appearance than men, but in the field of athletics and sports analysts, newer perspectives suggest that there are fewer distinctions between how male and female athletes are portrayed. The present study examined whether there were differences in broadcast commentary of men’s and women’s Olympic basketball gold medal games, including comments about the players looks and appearance, their physicality and athleticism, and the pattern of name used. The coding method employed was developed based on previous research and used to quantify the frequency of each category. Two coders …

Body Mass Index And Shortened Telomere Length In Middle-Aged Female And Male Running Head: Middle-Aged And Shortened Telomere Length, Tahreer Mohammed Al-Thuwaini Apr 2022

Body Mass Index And Shortened Telomere Length In Middle-Aged Female And Male Running Head: Middle-Aged And Shortened Telomere Length, Tahreer Mohammed Al-Thuwaini

Baghdad Science Journal

Obesity is a risk factor associated with age-related disorders that accelerate aging, and it increases the risk of metabolic diseases. Therefore, this study was conducted to investigate the association of leukocyte telomere length (LTL) with the presence of higher body weight in middle-aged females and males. The study subjects comprised 160 (80 control and 80 higher body mass index BMI groups) with ranging ages of 30-50 years included and stratified for BMI. The physio-biochemical analysis was measured using enzymatic determination. Mean telomere length was determined by using the southern blotting technique. The association analysis revealed a significant variance (P < 0.01) in biochemical parameters between higher BMI groups and control including waist, lipid profile, and the level of estradiol, testosterone, follicle-stimulating hormone, and luteinizing hormone. Mean telomere length was shorter in middle-aged males compared to the females of higher BMI groups and control groups for both age groups. LTL was shorter in the overweight and obese patients compared with the control group, and these differences in LTL obese group were shorter compared to the overweight group. In conclusion, shorter telomere length was observed in middle-aged males associated with higher body weight and lipid abnormalities. Lipid/lipoprotein abnormalities can be used as a predictor for the shortened telomere length and the reduction in adiposity indices can improvement the telomere length in both overweight and obese subjects.

Agency, Mentorship, And Self-Efficacy: Achieving Gender Equity Among Texas Superintendents, Carmela Marisa Levy-David Apr 2022

Agency, Mentorship, And Self-Efficacy: Achieving Gender Equity Among Texas Superintendents, Carmela Marisa Levy-David

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The goal of this qualitative case study was to revisit Bandura’s agency, self-efficacy theory, and Kram’s mentor theory to address the disproportionality between the number of men and women superintendents in Texas. Despite extensive female representation in classrooms, campus leadership, and central office positions, the number of women superintendents remained relatively unchanged for nearly a decade. Access to mentors, leadership pipelines, career pathways, and other factors was examined to identify current and prior barriers to promotion. Semistructured interviews gathered reflections and experiences from the lens of seven current women superintendents and six mentors of women superintendents. Survey responses from women …

Wealth Accumulation By Hypogamy In Own And Parental Education In China, Cheng Cheng, Yang Zhou Apr 2022

Wealth Accumulation By Hypogamy In Own And Parental Education In China, Cheng Cheng, Yang Zhou

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Objective: This study examines how household wealth accumulation varies by different types of hypogamy on the basis of couples' own and parental education. Background: Educational hypogamy (wives having more education than their husbands) is increasingly relevant in many societies, given the reversal of the gender gap in education. Prior research has studied how marital sorting on couples' own education shapes their individual earnings trajectories. Few have examined the implications of marital sorting on parental education for family-level economic well-being. Method: Using data from the 2010–2018 China Family Panel Studies and multilevel growth curve models, this study examined how household wealth …

How Employees Learn To Speak Up From Their Leaders: Gender Congruity Effects In The Development Of Voice Self-Efficacy, Thomas Taiyi Yan, Subrahmaniam Tangirala, Abhijeet K. Vadera, Srinivas Ekkirala Apr 2022

How Employees Learn To Speak Up From Their Leaders: Gender Congruity Effects In The Development Of Voice Self-Efficacy, Thomas Taiyi Yan, Subrahmaniam Tangirala, Abhijeet K. Vadera, Srinivas Ekkirala

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Voice-or the expression of ideas, concerns, or opinions on work issues by employees-can help organizations thrive. However, we highlight that men and women differ in their voice self-efficacy, or the personal confidence in formulating and articulating work-related viewpoints. Such differences, we argue, can impede women's voice from emerging at work. Drawing on social cognitive theory (SCT), we propose that women tend to develop greater voice self-efficacy and thereby speak up more when they have the opportunity to observe female rather than male leaders speak up. Hence, we point to the potential absence of women leaders who can role model speaking …

Still Unnoticed. Women In Polish Sports Associations. Content Analysis Of Polish, International, And British Formal Rules Of Sports Organizations, Natalia Organista

Baltic Journal of Health and Physical Activity

From a critical paradigm point of view sport has been a sexist institution. Despite the women empowerment in sport they are still trivialized and marginalized. Research also shows that sport organizations may be exceptionally opposed to women, valuing hegemonic masculinity. Therefore, the aim of this article is to check whether gender inequalities occur in Polish sports organizations and what the scale of those inequalities is in comparison to international and British organizations. Content analysis was used to examine official documents of organizations. The sample consists of seventeen Polish, international and British sports organizations. The content analysis indicates that international and …

The Unfinished Hope Of Gower's Transgender Children, Gabrielle M.W. Bychowski Mar 2022

The Unfinished Hope Of Gower's Transgender Children, Gabrielle M.W. Bychowski

Accessus

This article examines two of Gower's tales from the Confessio Amantis that deal with trans youths: Iphis and Narcissus. Considering these two tales together, I ask the question: why does one story end with hopeful futurity for the trans masculine youth and the other end with death and the absence of futurity for the trans feminine youth. Connecting these medieval texts to premodern contexts and then with modern contexts, I map the trajectory of centuries long problems facing trans youths. In the end, I conclude that trans youth possess a healthier and more stable future when they receive trans affirming …

“Worthy Of Emulation:” Mira Behn And Indian Independence, 1925-1959, Tamala Malerk Mar 2022

“Worthy Of Emulation:” Mira Behn And Indian Independence, 1925-1959, Tamala Malerk

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi is lauded for his work in helping to bring independence to India. Historians and authors are correct in asserting Gandhi’s importance to the independence movement of India, but he did not do it alone. Gandhi was helped by followers, foreign and domestic, who believed in his vision of an independent India. One of these disciples was Madeleine Slade, or as she would later be known, Mira Behn. Behn was born into an upper-class British family: her father an Admiral in the Royal Navy and her mother a housewife. Behn came upon a copy of French philosopher, Romain …

Has Feminism Changed Women’S Realities In Africa? An Interrogation Of The Poems Of Ogundipe And Shire, Edith Weseja Bwana Mar 2022

Has Feminism Changed Women’S Realities In Africa? An Interrogation Of The Poems Of Ogundipe And Shire, Edith Weseja Bwana

Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences

African feminist movements of the 1960’s marked the starting point of debates from the origin of feminism in Africa to its impact on women and the society at large. Literature has from the go been used as a vehicle to reflect the life and its vicissitude on African women. African women writers have used literature as a platform to challenge and re-imagine gender relations within their societies and the continent as a whole. Yet, the question arises: despite half a century’s worth of literary production, has the reality of women, as reflected in literature, changed? This paper thematically interrogates the …

Aiming To Please: Navigating Intersectional Realities, Priscilla Kar Yee Lo Mar 2022

Aiming To Please: Navigating Intersectional Realities, Priscilla Kar Yee Lo

Theses and Dissertations

As a product of a Chinese immigrant family in North America, I was perpetually reminded to be practical about my future. But after over a decade as a health care professional, I began to feel dissatisfied with the direction of my life. I turned to creative outlets to find a voice and to explore my identity as a female of colour. To create work as an act of remembrance of the collective intersectional adversity minority women continue to face. I was drawn to glass because it is inherently paradoxical, constantly in a state of fragility and permanency. This mirrors the …

Cognitive Features Of The Proper Nouns, Malika Pulatova Mar 2022

Cognitive Features Of The Proper Nouns, Malika Pulatova

Mental Enlightenment Scientific-Methodological Journal

Doing research on proper names has not been completed in the sphere of cognitive linguistics. From the point of view of cognitive science, the creation of a new name is not so much the use of predetermined mental representations, but an active process of establishing various connections between mental spaces in which various aspects of information are integrated. In this case, the linguistic unit does not just excite a certain stereotypical cognitive structure in our minds, but launches a creative process in which the person himself chooses the ways and means of constructing a situation or an object. With this …
