Faculty Retention: A Case Study Examining The Factors That Influence Faculty Retention At The Northern Marianas College, Barbara C. Hunter
Faculty Retention: A Case Study Examining The Factors That Influence Faculty Retention At The Northern Marianas College, Barbara C. Hunter
Journal of Fundamental & Applied Business Research
The issue of the need to recruit and retain faculty has become increasingly discussed in educational literature. Retention programs for faculty play a strategic role in developing the institution, especially when it involves building capacity and maintaining a competitive advantage. The goal for this fundamental research is to illustrate how the qualitative methods applied will identify the factors that influence retention among faculty at the Northern Marianas College (NMC, 2020). To ensure that the case study was conducted thoroughly, a deeper and theoretically sound approach was explored to understand the perceptual views of current faculty and administration on retention. The …

Rethinking Doctoral Qualifying Exams And Candidacy In The Physical Sciences: Learning Toward Scientific Legitimacy, Román Liera, Aireale J. Rodgers, Lauren N. Irwin, Julie R. Posselt
Department of Educational Leadership Scholarship and Creative Works
There is growing awareness that established structures of higher education are often predicated on problematic assumptions about merit, excellence, and rigor. Doctoral qualifying exams, for example, are required to advance to candidacy in many Ph.D. programs despite decades of documented concerns about the implications of standard modes for student equity and well-being. As more Ph.D. programs move to reform these exams and candidacy requirements, it is important to understand how Ph.D. programs, as academic organizations, construct the significance of the qualifying exam. A sociocultural lens suggests qualifying exams and the learning that enables their passage are symbolic rituals that move …

Mental Health Education In Higher Education, Chelsea J. Farley
Masters Projects
This project dives into the current mental health status of college students and what institutions are doing to address students steady and continuous decline of mental health. Mental Health 101: A Comprehensive Guide for Faculty incorporates suggestions from literature and theory to provide resources to faculty members when educating students. Mental Health 101 was created with the social-ecological model in mind (Bronfenbrenner, 1979) by connecting the individual student to their environment, or in this case, the college classroom. The guide consists of information about mental health such as risk factors and warning signs, coping strategies, activities, and assignments faculty members …
Collaborative Challenges Between Educational Accessibility Coordinators And Adjunct Faculty In Supporting Autism Spectrum Students, Tamara Faure, Pietro Antonio Sasso
Collaborative Challenges Between Educational Accessibility Coordinators And Adjunct Faculty In Supporting Autism Spectrum Students, Tamara Faure, Pietro Antonio Sasso
New York Journal of Student Affairs
Accessibility of educational accommodations has increased but can be frequently inconsistent for undergraduates with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The didactic relationship between educational accessibility staff with faculty, who are increasingly adjuncts, facilitates many course-learning accommodations. This descriptive phenomenological study explored the perceptions and professional experiences of educational accessibility coordinators with adjunct faculty in their implementation of learning accommodation for undergraduates with ASD. Findings from this study suggested that accessibility coordinators negotiated expectations of unprepared adjunct faculty and ASD students to address issues throughout the semester.
Coordinators believed ASD students struggled to navigate their experiences with adjunct professors because they were …

The Role Of Faculty In Durable Skills Development In Higher Education, James Hutson, Mark Valenzuela, Shannon Wright, Elizabeth Melick
Faculty Scholarship
Although Emsi and other market researchers have found that employers desire durable skills (formerly known as “soft skills”) in new hires, there have been few studies dedicated to identifying how faculty perceptions of skill development differ in degree and by area, and how that might impact how such skills are embedded in classroom instruction. This study proposes to investigate the perceptions of faculty from different academic backgrounds and how their disciplines and experiences may contribute to their perceived role in curricular, cocurricular or extracurricular offerings that support durable skill development. Results from the study demonstrate the differing perspectives and expectations …

Effects Of A Repeated Reading Intervention Delivered Online To Upper Elementary Students, John Elwood Romig, Ashley Jetton
Effects Of A Repeated Reading Intervention Delivered Online To Upper Elementary Students, John Elwood Romig, Ashley Jetton
SAGE Open Access Agreement Publications-Archive
Repeated reading is an intervention with strong evidence for improving students' oral reading fluency. However, little research has examined the use of this intervention outside of traditional school contexts. School closures due to COVID-19 forced schools and teacher preparation programs to create new approaches to evidence-based reading interventions that could be delivered online. This study examined the effects of a repeated reading fluency intervention delivered synchronously online. A single-case repeated acquisition design examined the intervention's effects on three upper elementary students' correct word reading fluency, defined as the number of words read correctly per minute. Visual analysis indicated repeated readings …
Trajectories Of Functional Decline In Older Adults: A Latent Class Growth Curve Analysis, Thomas Dombrowsky
Trajectories Of Functional Decline In Older Adults: A Latent Class Growth Curve Analysis, Thomas Dombrowsky
SAGE Open Access Agreement Publications-Archive
There have been few studies examining trajectories of functional decline among older adults in the United States using large representative databases. The purpose of this study was to describe the mean trajectory of functional decline for a representative sample of US older adults, to determine the optimal number of latent classes within that sample, and to identify key differences between the classes on select variables. Through the use of link functions, non-linear trajectories can be modeled. Three classes were identified and were named Rapid Decline, Late Decline, and High Baseline. The Late Decline Group was the most numerous and was …

Background: The healing capacity of the human glenoid labrum varies by tear location. Current evidence suggests that the healing capacity of meniscal and cartilage injuries relates to cellular composition and vascularity. However, little is known about the histological characteristics of the glenoid labrum and how they may affect healing potential in specific anatomic regions. Hypothesis: Regenerative characteristics of the glenoid labrum differ based on the anatomic region. Study design: Descriptive laboratory study. Methods: Human glenoid labra from fresh unpreserved cadavers were transversely sectioned in different anatomic regions. Masson trichrome stain was used to determine dense and loose extracellular matrix regions …

SAGE Open Access Agreement Publications-Archive
The current tensions around racism in public schooling prompted Dr. Edwards, an assistant professor in educational leadership and policy studies, to teach critical race theory and assign a racism audit for doctoral students to use the theory in practice. Students were to complete their racism audit on their school campus. However, several students refused to complete the assignment. Some students refused for fear of job repercussions, while others accused Dr. Edwards of indoctrinating them with liberal political ideologies. This case explores the complexity and dilemmas that faculty encounter as they engage in antiracism leadership teaching during a time of racial …

Big 5 Personality Characteristics Are Related To Choices About Study Strategy, Aizhan Akhmet, Melissa Lehman
Student Publications and Presentations
Choices that students make in regards to how to effectively learn course content may be affected by Big 5 personality characteristics. For example, previous research showed conscientiousness is positively correlated with Grade Point Average and group leadership and that extraversion is positively correlated with leadership and with the likelihood of finding group work beneficial; neuroticism is negatively correlated with leadership (Casper & Lehman, 2019). The present study is aimed at examining whether students who are given information about an effective learning strategy, retrieval practice, would change their choice of study strategy and whether the likelihood of changing or using retrieval …

Measuring artifacts is a fundamental method of archeological research. Measurements assist scientists in gaining knowledge about past human-animal interactions, the effects of those interactions on ecosystems, environmental changes over time, changes in ecological resources, and more. The caliper is the traditional tool for such work, but it is uncommon for scientists to carry a caliper around in their bag or pocket while in the field. There is a tool, however, that almost every person carries around with them constantly: the smartphone. In this experiment we endeavored to discover if two measuring apps, the “Ruler” app and the “ARuler” app would …

Effect Of Cadmium Exposure On Planarian Regeneration, Natalie Gonzalez, Reyna Dolcine, Cassandra S. Korte
Student Publications and Presentations
Cadmium is a neurotoxic chemical widely distributed within our environments, persevering for long periods. It can be found in cigarettes, batteries, plastics, and other products used daily. Exposure to cadmium can have toxic effects, altering the balance between the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and the ability of cells to detoxify and repair the damage. Its accumulation can cause organ damage, cancer, respiratory and reproductive toxicity, and neurological defects. Planaria regeneration is a complex biological process that involves the activation of stem cells, called neoblasts, to regenerate lost tissues and organs. Neoblasts can divide and differentiate into various cell …

Research suggests a moderate incidence of depression, anxiety, and especially stress among college students (Ramon-Arbues et al., 2020). It is reasonable to believe that these mental health outcomes might be inversely correlated with resilience, the ability to adapt to new challenges. In this study, we hypothesize an inverse correlation between resilience (as measured by the self-reported BRS-6) and stress, anxiety, and depression (as measured by the DASS-21). In other words, college students who feel resilient will experience greater mental health and wellness. To build on previous research that suggests these effects in females only (Ahmed & Julius, 2015), biological sex …

Kombucha Bacteria Growth Rate At Different Temperatures, Adam London, Jeff Ciruzzi, Joseph Lewis, Cassandra S. Korte
Student Publications and Presentations
Many commercially available kombucha products instruct to keep the bottle refrigerated. Kombucha contains probiotic bacteria. Bacteria are known to proliferate at different temperatures. Thus, we hypothesized that the warmer the temperature of kombucha storage the more bacteria growth there would be. Kombucha was stored at different temperatures and bacteria growth was recorded. Three bottles of kombucha were used in the experiment and each was put into their respective temperature zones. The first bottle, the control, was stored in a refrigerated area at 4°C, since kombucha is recommended to be stored in cold temperatures for safe consumption. The second bottle was …

Plasticizing additives such as phthalates, are known to cause disruptions in human nervous systems linked to neurological disorders, thus with the Drosophila activity monitoring (DAM) system test can be conducted to consider whether the flies are exhibiting hyperactivity (Hlisníková et al., 2021). Drosophila is a useful model for exposure of metabolic compounds followed by general and specific assays of their effects. Our experiments propose a link between exposure to phthalates and hyperactivity between humans that can be investigated with flies as a model for testing hyperactivity (Praveena et al., 2020). The link that is proposed is a cross-sectional study that …
