BACKGROUND: Zika virus, an emerging serious infectious disease, is a threat to persons living or travelling to regions where it is currently endemic, and also to contacts of infected individuals. The aim of this study was to assess knowledge about this new public health threat to persons residing in a Middle Eastern country.

METHODS: We conducted a survey at several international universities in Qatar to assess knowledge and awareness about this disease. An adapted version of the survey was also conducted using online channels from Qatar.

This study examined the correlation between the proportion of full time mathematics faculty with formal pedagogical training at eight Mississippi public community colleges named to the Aspen Foundation list of the top 150 community colleges in the United States and the proportion of developmental math students who successfully completed a college algebra course in their 1st year, the proportion of students who graduated within 4 years, and the proportion of 1st-time full-time students who returned for the 2nd year. After collecting data from 6 of the 8 colleges, a correlational analysis revealed no statistically significant relationships between the proportion of …

In order to best prepare students to become competent and confident practitioners in a clinical environment upon graduating dental school, it is imperative for them to receive consistent and productive feedback from the supervising faculty. Through academic engagement, and more specifically faculty calibration, it may be possible to eliminate the disconnect that sometimes exists between faculty expectations and terminology, and those of the students. Simultaneous imaging of multiple targets (SIMT) in opaque biological tissues is an important goal for molecular imaging in the future. Multi-color fluorescence imaging in deep tissues is a promising technology to reach this goal. In this work, we developed a dual-modality imaging system by combining our recently developed ultrasound-switchable fluorescence (USF) imaging technology with the conventional ultrasound (US) B-mode imaging. This dual-modality system can simultaneously image tissue acoustic structure information and multi-color fluorophores in centimeter-deep tissue with comparable spatial resolutions. Concern regarding the secularization of Christian higher education has

prompted researchers to investigate the extent that faith and learning

is integrated at a faculty level and what factors might predict faculty

integration (Lyon, Beaty, Parker, & Mencken, 2005). This research

attempted to replicate Lyon et al.’s (2005) logistic regression model

predicting faculty integration of faith using survey responses gathered

as part of Phase II of the Council for Christian Colleges & Universities

(CCCU) Denominational Study (Rine, Glanzer, & Davignon, 2013).

Respondents included 2,074 faculty from 55 institutions. The first

Moderated multiple regression (MMR) is frequently used to test moderation hypotheses in the behavioral and social sciences. In MMR with a categorical moderator, between-groups heteroscedasticity is not uncommon and can inflate Type I error rates or reduce statistical power. Compared with research on remedial procedures that can mitigate the effects of this violated assumption, less research attention has focused on statistical procedures that can be used to detect between-groups heteroscedasticity. In the current article, we briefly review such procedures. Although various work-family policies are available to faculty members, many underuse these policies due to concerns about negative career consequences. Therefore, we believe it is important to develop an academic work culture that is more supportive of work-family needs. Using network data gathered from faculty members at a Midwestern university, this study investigated the relationship between friendship connections with colleagues and perceived work-family supportiveness in the department. It also explored the role of parental status in the relationship for men and women. Results show that faculty with larger friendship networks have more positive perceptions of work-family culture compared to faculty …

BACKGROUND: Peripheral nerve injury leads to a regenerative state. However, the reinnervation process is highly non-selective. Growing axons are often misrouted and establish aberrant synapsis to abductor or adductor muscles. Determining the complex properties of abductor and adductor motoneurons in a neuron culture, may lay the groundwork for future studies on axon guidance, leading to a clinical treatment for a selective reinnervation. Regional data mirrors national statistics denoting the low number of faculty of color working at state-funded community colleges. The mechanisms by which prostanoids contribute to the maintenance of whole body water homeostasis are complex and not fully understood. The present study demonstrates that an EP3-dependent feedback mechanism contributes to the regulation of water homeostasis under high-salt conditions. Rats on a normal diet and tap water were placed in metabolic cages and given either sulprostone (20 μg·kg·day) or vehicle for 3 days to activate EP3 receptors in the thick ascending limb (TAL). Treatment was continued for another 3 days in rats given either 1% NaCl in the drinking water or tap water. Sulprostone decreased expression of cyclooxygenase 2 (COX-2) …

Injury to the recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) leads to the loss of ipsilateral laryngeal fold movement, with dysphonia, and occasionally dysphagia. Functional movement of the vocal folds is never restored due to misrouting of regenerating axons to agonist and antagonist laryngeal muscles. Changes of neurotrophic factor expression within denervated muscles occur after nerve injury and may influence nerve regeneration, axon guidance and muscle reinnervation. This study investigates the expression of certain neurotrophic factors in the laryngeal muscles during the course of axonal regeneration using RT-PCR.
