Uta Library & Center For Mexican American Studies Focus On Faculty Poster - Dr. Douglas Richmond, Margaret Dwyer Sep 2011

Uta Library & Center For Mexican American Studies Focus On Faculty Poster - Dr. Douglas Richmond, Margaret Dwyer

UTA Libraries Staff Publications - Archive

Abstract: Just as patriots in the United States, Mexican rebels initially sought local autonomy rather than independence. After two priests initiated regional insurrections, the war for independence often became local confl icts rather than a movement for national liberation. This became particularly evident when upper class forces battled Hidalgo and Morelos, who attempted to use the insurrection to obtain redress of socioeconomic problems. Eventually the criollo determination to control Mexico triumphed when the unheralded Iturbide provided the formula for consensus with his brilliant Plan de Iguala.

Perceptions Of Faculty Association Leaders: Roles And Essential Skills, Keith Brian Reinhardt

Dissertations

AN ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION OF KEITH B. REINHARDT, for the Doctor of Philosophy degree in EDUCATIONAL ADMINISTRATION, presented on May 26, 2011, at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. TITLE: PERCEPTIONS OF FACULTY ASSOCIATION LEADERS: ROLES AND ESSENTIAL SKILL MAJOR PROFESSOR: Dr. Patrick Dilley A specific perspective of how faculty association leaders function at a tangible level has yet to be presented. Past studies describe faculty leadership as a collective abstract idea or theme, disregarding the concept and importance of individual faculty leader's roles at an operational level. The purpose of the study was to identify the roles and skills of …

Plant Scientists And The Productivity Effects Of Extension Appointments, Jeremy D. Foltz, Vanity K. Gee, Bradford L. Barham Aug 2011

Plant Scientists And The Productivity Effects Of Extension Appointments, Jeremy D. Foltz, Vanity K. Gee, Bradford L. Barham

Journal of Extension

This article analyzes the primary scholarship activities of agricultural college plant science faculty with and without Extension appointments using survey data from all 1862 land-grant institutions. The evidence suggests that differences between Extension professors and others without Extension appointments are small for minor Extension appointments, but show significant and increasing tradeoffs between Extension and research outputs above a 35-50% Extension appointment. The evidence is suggestive of the potential for gains from exploiting complementarities between Extension and research rather than from pursuing high levels of specialization. The work concludes with implications for the role of state specialists in Extension.

Linguistics & TESOL Faculty Publications & Presentations - Archive

Earlier studies showed some word pairs in health discourse being conflated. If some polysemes are not recognized as fully separate senses, is there a pattern of use showing if speakers feel that experiencing one sense creates the occurrence of the second sense?

What Do They Say? Students From A Private, Faith-Based, Four-Year University Share Their Perspectives On College As A Mentoring Environment, Jeffrey Andrew Bolster Edd May 2011

What Do They Say? Students From A Private, Faith-Based, Four-Year University Share Their Perspectives On College As A Mentoring Environment, Jeffrey Andrew Bolster Edd

Dissertations

Research indicates that the term mentor in the context of higher education currently has multiple definitions and is used to describe a variety of programs, efforts, and formal as well as informal activities. In recent years, interdisciplinary perspectives on traditional undergraduate students have been converging around the idea that the functions and characteristics of mentoring students could be shared across the institution, creating what Daloz Parks (2000) has called a mentoring environment. This sharing of responsibility has the possibility to address what Baxter Magolda (2009) has recently identified as missing in higher education, a "holistic, theoretical perspective to promote the …

Eighty-four White, Caucasian, or European American faculty members were selected for this study, and a total of 17 faculty members participated in the study. Two survey instruments were administered. The first was a demographic survey that obtained information, which included: …

Demystifying The Data Interview, Eugenia S. Kim, Jake R. Carlson

Libraries Research Publications

What would a “typical” librarian need to know before conducting an interview with a faculty member regarding his/her research data and associated needs in managing or curating this data?

Supported by the Institute of Museum and Library Services, the Purdue University Libraries and the Library School at the University of Illinois conducted research on “Which researchers are willing to share data, when, with whom, and under what conditions?”.  The results led to the creation of the Data Curation Profiles (DCP) Toolkit, a semi-structured interview designed to assist librarians in identifying the data management needs of researchers.  The authors analyzed the …
