Empowering Pandemic Narratives: Transitioning From In-Person To Virtual Blog Training, Alexandra Pirkle, Krystal Schenk
UTA Libraries Staff Publications - Archive
When UTA Libraries launched its new website in January 2020, one of the goals for Marketing and Communications was to provide comprehensive and accessible blog training to Libraries staff. What began as pre-scheduled, in-person training sessions in computer labs quickly transitioned to more fluid, virtual offerings as the COVID-19 pandemic swept the United States and staff began to work from home. This presentation will describe the original development of our blog training, including documentation, branding, and overall curricular structure, and how we translated that to the more nebulous Microsoft Teams-based sessions we continue to offer to staff today. We will …

Faculty Perceptions Of Dyadic Advising Relationships, Power, And Cultural Consciousness On College Student Learning Outcomes, Hind Albana
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
Abstract
Academic advising in institutions of higher education lack consistent assessment and evaluation of practices impairing the ability to define the role, objectives, and methods utilized. Over-reliance on student satisfaction surveys for evaluating advising reinforces this phenomenon. To break the cycle, this study used survey responses from a nationwide sample (N = 156) of faculty advisors from public and private 4-year colleges and universities to examine the relationship between and among the constructs of a working relationship, shared power, cultural consciousness, and student learning outcomes. The questionnaire instrument score produced a Cronbach's alpha of .927, illustrating substantially strong internal consistency. …

Faculty Job Satisfaction Related To Online Course Design, April Marie Hixson
School of Education Doctoral Projects - Higher Education
Online education has expanded and evolved slowly through the decades, but the COVID-19 pandemic of 2020-2021 put online education at the forefront of teaching and learning worldwide and sped up the design and delivery of online courses. This study sought to examine faculty attitudes and opinions (amid a global pandemic) toward online course design that may affect their job satisfaction levels. Specifically, it explored factors that could inhibit or contribute to faculty job satisfaction during their engagement in online instructional design. Further, the study was designed to gain an understanding of how pedagogical and technological changes influence the degree of …

Chameleondb: A Key-Value Store For Optane Persistent Memory, Wenhui Zhang, Xingsheng Zhao, Song Jiang, Hong Jiang
Chameleondb: A Key-Value Store For Optane Persistent Memory, Wenhui Zhang, Xingsheng Zhao, Song Jiang, Hong Jiang
Association of Computing Machinery Open Access Agreement Publications-Archive
The emergence of Intel’s Optane DC persistent memory (Optane Pmem) draws much interest in building persistent key-value (KV) stores to take advantage of its high throughput and low latency. A major challenge in the efforts stems from the fact that Optane Pmem is essentially a hybrid storage device with two distinct properties. On one hand, it is a high-speed byte-addressable device similar to DRAM. On the other hand, the write to the Optane media is conducted at the unit of 256 bytes, much like a block storage device. Existing KV store designs for persistent memory do not take into account …
A Capstone In Education: Current Challenges For Occupational Therapist Clinicians Transitioning To Role Of Academician, Jacie Schneider
A Capstone In Education: Current Challenges For Occupational Therapist Clinicians Transitioning To Role Of Academician, Jacie Schneider
Department of Occupational Therapy Entry-Level Capstone Projects
The doctoral capstone I participated in for my entry-level Doctor of Occupational Therapy program was in a focus area of education with a mentor who was a professor in a master’s program. I supported my mentor in her role as a professor of a physical dysfunction intervention course and had the opportunity to present a module to students on wheelchair seating interventions. Using experience gained during my capstone as well as information learned during the review of literature, I created a guide for OTs interested in making the transition into academia to meet the capstone project requirement.

Raising a healthy child has its joys and challenges; however, raising a child or caring for someone with special needs brings a new set of obstacles. Parents and caregivers of children and individuals with special needs do not have the same selection of available resources as typical parents of healthy children. These challenges are approached with an entirely different perspective with its own joys and challenges that can be demanding. The purpose of this study was to research the usefulness of an iBook, Navigating Life in the World of Disabilities, by providing accurate and helpful information from an empirical approach …

A Qualitative Study Examining Home As Faculty Workplace During Covid-19 Self-Isolation, Lee Stadtlander, Amy Sickel
Higher Learning Research Communications
Objectives: Using the lens of the virtual workplace model, the current basic qualitative study examined how COVID-19 self-isolation affected both online and land-based faculty (working online as an emergency due to COVID-19) workspaces and work processes.
Method: A total of 20 online and six land-based faculty completed e-mail interviews both one month and 3 months post self-isolation.
Results: Online faculty were more satisfied with their home workplace, but both groups felt more negative about their online work, as they felt a loss of freedom and independence due to the isolation.
Conclusions: Findings indicated that both land-based and online faculty showed …
An Autoethnographic Study Of Online Class Size And Instructor Participation In Discussions, Danielle M. Philipson
An Autoethnographic Study Of Online Class Size And Instructor Participation In Discussions, Danielle M. Philipson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This research provided a detailed description of the researcher’s experience as an online instructor who faced increasing demands while trying to maintain instructional effectiveness. This account provided online program directors who sought to balance instructor satisfaction, accreditation standards, and financial pressures with insight into the impact of class size choices on instructor behavior in the online classroom. A qualitative autoethnographic method was used to understand the nature of the connection between class size and instructor use of instructional posts and to identify factors that influence the way instructors participate in online discussions. The autoethnographic genre of qualitative research allowed the …

The Impact Of Faculty Feedback On Student Perceptions Of Faculty-Student Relationships, Lauren Trejo
The Impact Of Faculty Feedback On Student Perceptions Of Faculty-Student Relationships, Lauren Trejo
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
This qualitive study examined four communication sciences and disorders (CSD) graduate students’ experiences with feedback from CSD faculty members to understand how it affected their relationships with faculty. Review of the literature revealed the importance and impact of feedback; however, it offered little research examining feedback within the field of CSD. Graduate students who completed their undergraduate degrees in CSD were interviewed to reflect on feedback experiences they received from faculty during their undergraduate and graduate education. The students were presented with two mock papers with differing feedback styles and were asked their reactions to the feedback. It was discovered …

Learning From Covid-19: Universal Design For Learning Implementation Prior To And During A Pandemic, Jennifer Renée Kilpatrick, Suzanne Ehrlich, Michelle Bartlett
UNF Faculty Research and Scholarship
This study examined whether higher education faculty knowingly and/or unknowingly applied UDL principles prior to and during the COVID-19 rapid online teaching and learning (ROTL) transition. Researchers collected data through a survey that was disseminated nationwide and completed by higher education faculty (n = 38). Findings included a shift in instruction modality where 50 percent of synchronous in person instruction moved to asynchronous online instruction or optional synchronous remote instruction. Additionally, there was an unsurprising, considerable increase in the use of technology to support student engagement with course content. Researchers identified themes in the barriers (e.g., time, resources, training) to …
