Support For Students With Disabilities: How Awareness And Accommodations Differ Across Faculty Members Within The Postsecondary Context, Toby Tomlinson Baker

Theses and Dissertations

This case study sought to determine the most salient needs of higher education faculty who instruct and accommodate students with disabilities (SWDs). Therefore, the faculty were analyzed as a community in a university setting. Currently, the accommodations that faculty provide for SWDs vary from institution to institution. Additionally, certain variables, such as faculty’s years with the university, budget, size, and location of the institution impact the level of support provided and what specific accommodations SWDs receive. The purpose of this qualitative case study was to develop an in-depth understanding of the current level of knowledge that faculty obtain for accommodating SWDs. …

Higher Education Administrators’ Experiences With Development Of Faculty Pedagogical Skills, Diane Cairns Jan 2021

Higher Education Administrators’ Experiences With Development Of Faculty Pedagogical Skills, Diane Cairns

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

One of the barriers most often cited by higher education faculty impacting the professional development of their pedagogical skills is the lack of support from the administrators in their institution. Identifying barriers, opportunities for support, and an approach for quality teaching using pedagogical techniques may contribute to a sustainable approach to impact student learning outcomes. The purpose of this basic qualitative study was to identify higher education administrators’ perceptions of barriers and support for the professional development of faculty pedagogical skills. The conceptual framework was based on Boyer’s scholarship of the professoriate model. A semistructured interview protocol was used to …

University Professors As “Transformative Leaders”, Cam Caldwell, Verl Anderson

The Journal of Values-Based Leadership

University professors have a moral obligation to be ethical leaders in guiding their stewards. Transformative Leadership, a concept identified in both the educational and business leadership literature, provides a valuable model for university professors to consider as they interact with students and help them to learn and to prepare for the challenges of the modern world. This paper integrates the education and business leadership perspectives of Transformative Leadership and identifies the contributions that this leadership model can contribute to the effectiveness of university professors who adopt its principles.

Academic libraries play an important role in advancing the use of open educational resources (OER) in higher education. In addition to connecting communities with information, an increasing number of libraries now provide OER publishing support and services for faculty. This panel presents the results of two OER creation projects supported and funded by such a program. The authors of the OER and an academic librarian will discuss their experiences developing, publishing, and piloting the OER. The OER project titled “Spanish-Language Television News Production in the United States of America” (original in Spanish) is the first of its kind focusing exclusively …

The Development Of A Portfolio For Academic Promotion And Tenure For Occupational Therapy Educators, David Levan Oct 2020

The Development Of A Portfolio For Academic Promotion And Tenure For Occupational Therapy Educators, David Levan

The Open Journal of Occupational Therapy

Advancement of occupational therapy educators is a significant achievement and important contribution to the American Occupational Therapy Association’s Vision 2025 and Centennial Vision. Successful promotion demands excellence and active engagement in faculty skill development, both of which are essential to student learning. The academic promotion and tenure process presents a new and unfamiliar expectation for entry-level and tenure-track occupational therapy educators. A multitude of institutional policies and procedures, formal and informal recommendations from administrators and colleagues, and lack of mentorship can make planning for academic promotion and tenure confusing and difficult. The purpose of this article is to provide …

Solidarity With Survivors: A Critical Discourse Analysis Of How Union Locals Representing Graduate Student Workers Address Sexual Violence, Alaa Abdelhamid Aug 2020

Solidarity With Survivors: A Critical Discourse Analysis Of How Union Locals Representing Graduate Student Workers Address Sexual Violence, Alaa Abdelhamid

Social Justice and Community Engagement Major Research Papers

This study uses critical discourse analysis through the lens of socialist and intersectional feminism to explore the ways union locals representing graduate student workers in the post-secondary sector in Ontario address sexual violence. I also explore how these union locals support and engage in activism related to sexual violence, what discourses are present in their efforts, and what is missing. My primary data source was original tweets within a four-year time frame between March 8, 2016 and March 8, 2020 from graduate student worker union locals at six Ontario universities. The union locals in my sample were: CUPE 3903 at …

Supporting Faculty Through An Open Education And Affordability Gratitude Campaign, Mandi Goodsett

Michael Schwartz Library Publications

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to demonstrate how an academic library can use a library-led, public, positive, and broad faculty gratitude campaign to help a campus embrace a culture of open education.

Design/methodology/approach

Using a literature review of faculty outreach efforts in the area of open education and an examination of the psychology of persuasion, this library developed a gratitude campaign that consisted of a faculty video, letters from the provost, signed cards from students, door hangers, and the delivery of swag bags to faculty offices.

Faculty Perceptions Of Students' Il Learning In First-Year Writing, Catherine Baird, Tiffany Soares Jul 2020

Faculty Perceptions Of Students' Il Learning In First-Year Writing, Catherine Baird, Tiffany Soares

University Libraries Scholarship and Creative Works

The study investigates the perceptions of first-year writing faculty of how their students develop information literacy (IL). The authors conducted 16 semi-structured interviews and analyzed them using a qualitative inductive coding method. The study contributes a close and nuanced understanding of faculty perceptions of IL learning to a literature with few recent qualitative studies. Faculty identify what they see as enablers and barriers to student learning. The authors conclude that the empathetic, process-oriented characterization of IL learning by these faculty invites further examination using multiple methodologies and elevation of faculty's voice in the discourse around IL.

Evaporation From Undulating Soil Surfaces Under Turbulent Airflow Through Numerical And Experimental Approaches, Bo Gao, John Farnsworth, Kathleen M. Smits May 2020

Evaporation From Undulating Soil Surfaces Under Turbulent Airflow Through Numerical And Experimental Approaches, Bo Gao, John Farnsworth, Kathleen M. Smits

Civil Engineering Faculty Publications - Archive

Evaporation from undulating soil surfaces is rarely studied due to limited modeling theory and inadequate experimental data linking dynamic soil and atmospheric interactions. The goal of this paper is to provide exploratory insights into evaporation behavior from undulating soil surfaces under turbulent conditions through numerical and experimental approaches. A previously developed and verified coupled free flow and porous media flow model was extended by incorporating turbulent airflow through Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes equations. The model explicitly describes the relevant physical processes and the key properties in the free flow, porous media, and at the interface, allowing for the analysis of coupled exchange …
