Cartilage injury induced by acute excessive contact stress is common and mostly affects young adult. Although early detection of cartilage injury may prevent serious and lifelong arthritic complications, early detection and treatment is not possible due to the lack of a reliable detection method. Since chondrocyte injury and subsequent cell death are the early signs of cartilage injury, it is likely that cartilage cell apoptosis can be used to predict the extent of injury. To test this hypothesis, a near infrared probe was fabricated to have high affinity to apoptotic cells. In vitro tests show that this apoptosis probe has …

Medical school faculty are crucial to advancing academic medicine’s missions of providing high-quality, patient-centered health care; training the next generation of physicians; and conducting research to inform advancement and innovation in health care delivery. This Analysis in Brief (AIB) takes an in-depth look at why faculty choose careers in academic medicine, by examining faculty responses to that very question. As institutional leadership strives to recruit and retain faculty, understanding these sentiments can inform work to help guide students, provide insight for those considering academic careers, and educate the public about the work of academic medicine and the vital role that …

This paper endeavors to reflectively analyze the process of building a fleet of large, durable tables with student workers' labor, primarily using the tools in our FabLab. Exploring causalities between experiences gained as part of the table project and increased fluency with general FabLab tasks such as explaining nuanced processes to and/or problem solving with learners, this analysis seeks to contextualize the library culture that made a project like this possible, in the hopes that an honest sharing of our experiences and lessons learned might assist other academic makerspaces in employing student service learning projects to improve their own makerspace …

Significant mental health disparities exist for Hispanic populations, especially with regard to depression treatment. Stigma and poor communication between patients and their providers result in low use of antidepressant medications and early treatment withdrawal. Cultural factors which influence treatment decisions among Hispanics include fears about the addictive and harmful properties of antidepressants, worries about taking too many pills, and the stigma attached to taking medications. Primary care settings often are the gateway to identifying undiagnosed or untreated mental health disorders, particularly for people with co-morbid physical health conditions. Hispanics, in particular, are more likely to receive mental healthcare in primary …

Pharmacy Practice & Administration
Defining the attributes of change catalysts within high functioning organizations, including the academic enterprise, is desirable. An understanding of these attributes within our academy may foster faculty interest and engagement in seeking administrative roles and serve to bolster succession planning within our schools. On one hand, there have been numerous publications teasing out the purported differences between leadership and management. On the other hand, does segregating these important characteristics based upon arbitrary distinctions do more harm than good? This commentary represents the work of a group of academic leaders participating in the 2015-2016 AACP Academic Leadership Fellowship Program. This work …
