Behavioral Comparisons In Autism Spectrum Disorder And Developmental Coordination Disorder: A Systematic Literature Review, Priscila Ca̤Ola, Haylie Miller, Peace Ossom Williamson

UTA Libraries Staff Publications - Archive

Background Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD) are developmental disorders that, since the DSM-5, can be diagnosed as co-occurring conditions. While some recent studies suggest that ASD and DCD have similar traits, others show clear behavioral distinctions between the two conditions. By gathering all studies that included (1) an ASD group and a DCD group, (2) an ASD + DCD group and a DCD group, or (3) ASD, ASD + DCD, and DCD groups, we aimed to identify similarities and differences in behaviors between the two disorders. Method We used a systematic search of PubMed (1946), Scopus …

Faculty Perceptions Of Readiness To Implement Interprofessional Education In Athletic Training, Meredith M. Parry Jun 2017

Faculty Perceptions Of Readiness To Implement Interprofessional Education In Athletic Training, Meredith M. Parry

Student Dissertations

As the athletic training profession takes steps towards the next level as an allied health care profession, advocates for the profession are positioning athletic trainers as key players in the interprofessional health care team. Recently, the CAATE has pronounced a move for athletic training education to transition all entry-level education to professional master’s degree programs. CAATE is also requesting that athletic training education programs find means to align with other healthcare profession education programs within their institution and actively engage in planned and continuous interprofessional learning activities. This study explored the gap in knowledge regarding athletic training faculty perceptions on …

I Would Teach It, But I Don't Know How: Faculty Perceptions Of Cultural Competency In The Health Sciences, A Case Study Analysis, Andrew J. Young, Michelle L. Ramirez

Humboldt Journal of Social Relations

This paper presents results from a survey of faculty perceptions of cultural competency training at “Health Sciences University,” a small, private university in a major city in the Northeastern United States. We found high levels of support among faculty for cultural competency training for students in bench and health sciences broadly, though data suggests that faculty are unsure how to effectively teach cultural competency and how to evaluate its effectiveness. Placing this data alongside literature exploring the lack of diversity and a “chilly climate” in STEM and health science disciplines for marginalized groups, we argue for 1) a need to …

Using An Audience Response System To Calibrate Dental Faculty Assessing Student Clinical Competence., Sean A. Aiken May 2017

Using An Audience Response System To Calibrate Dental Faculty Assessing Student Clinical Competence., Sean A. Aiken

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In order to best prepare students to become competent and confident practitioners in a clinical environment upon graduating dental school, it is imperative for them to receive consistent and productive feedback from the supervising faculty. Through academic engagement, and more specifically faculty calibration, it may be possible to eliminate the disconnect that sometimes exists between faculty expectations and terminology, and those of the students. In terms of definitions, academic engagement reflects faculty scholarly development activities that support integration of relevant, current theory of best practices consistent with the school's mission, expected learner outcomes, and supporting strategies.1-6, 32 The difficulty lies …

Intersectional Opportunities In Open Educational Resources, Michelle Reed

UTA Libraries Staff Publications - Archive

As academic librarians become increasingly involved with advocacy and implementation of open educational resources (OER) and open educational practices (OEP) on our campuses, it is important to think critically about how such initiatives further the strategic goals and priorities of the libraries and institutions we serve. OER/OEP advocacy typically includes copyright education, making this budding area of librarianship a rich example of how we may leverage the intersections of scholarly communication and information literacy to strengthen our outreach and educational initiatives. This hands-on workshop builds on concepts presented in "ACRL Intersections of Scholarly Communication and Information Literacy Webcast Series," sponsored …

Session presented on Saturday, March 18, 2017: Purpose and Significance: Work-life balance (WLB) contributes to a healthy work environment and is an issue that may affect job performance, job satisfaction and one's intent to remain in a position. WLB is defined as one's ability to achieve and maintain a 'balance' between work and life outside work. Data describing work-life balance of PhD and DNP program faculty were collected through administration of a work-life balance measure as part of a larger survey, and an open-ended question about their experiences. Strategies that doctoral program faculty use to achieve work-life balance were also …

Lung Protection By Inhalation Of Exogenous Solubilized Extracellular Matrix, Jinglei Wu, Priya Ravikumar, Kytai Truong Nguyen, Connie C. W. Hsia, Yi Hong

Go Open Fund Publications-Archive

Decellularized extracellular matrix (ECM) contains complex tissue-specific components that work in concert to promote tissue repair and constructive remodeling and has been used experimentally and clinically to accelerate epithelial wound repair, leading us to hypothesize that lung-derived ECM could mitigate acute lung injury. To explore the therapeutic potential of ECM for noninvasive delivery to the lung, we decellularized and solubilized porcine lung ECM, then characterized the composition, concentration, particle size and stability of the preparation. The ECM preparation at 3.2 mg/mL with average particle size <3 µm was tested in vitro on human A549 lung epithelial cells exposed to 95% O2 for 24 hours, and in vivo by tracheal instillation or nebulization into the lungs of rats exposed intermittently or continuously to 90% O2 for a cumulative 72 hours. Our results showed that the preparation was enriched in collagen, reduced in glycosaminoglycans, and contained various bioactive molecules. Particle size was concentration-dependent. Compared to the respective controls treated with cell culture medium in vitro or saline in vivo, ECM inhalation normalized cell survival and alveolar morphology, and reduced hyperoxia-induced apoptosis and oxidative damage. This proof-of-concept study established the methodology, feasibility and therapeutic potential of exogenous solubilized ECM for pulmonary cytoprotection, possibly as an adjunct or potentiator of conventional therapy.

Monetary Compensation Of Full-Time Faculty At American Public Regional Universities: The Impact Of Geography And The Existence Of Collective Bargaining, Stephen G. Katsinas, Johnson A. Ogun, Nathaniel J. Bray

Journal of Collective Bargaining in the Academy

This paper examines monetary compensation of 127,222 full-time faculty employed by the 390 regional universities in the United States who are members of the American Association of State Colleges and Universities. Compensation data published by the U.S. Department of Education and organizations concerned with faculty, including the American Association of University Professors and others, typically lump all four-year public university faculty together, ignoring well-known differences in teaching workloads at different types of public four-year universities (four instead of two courses taught each term, etc.). Further, many compensation studies do not examine fringe benefits, which are 30 percent of total monetary …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation qualitatively investigates counselor education faculty perceptions regarding online courses or programs and the overall perception of counselor education faculty regarding the effectiveness of online learning. A total of 154 counselor educators completed the CEATOLS instrument, a survey designed to capture demographic information, perceptions of effectiveness of online learning in counselor education, and concerns related to online learning in counselor education. Results indicate that, overall, counselor educators have a markedly lower perception of the effectiveness of online counselor education courses than of traditional Analysis of the concerns expressed by counselor educators reveal a five-factor structure similar to that which …

Predicting Faculty Integration Of Faith And Learning, Kimberly Hardin Jan 2017

Predicting Faculty Integration Of Faith And Learning, Kimberly Hardin

Teacher Education

Concern regarding the secularization of Christian higher education has

prompted researchers to investigate the extent that faith and learning

is integrated at a faculty level and what factors might predict faculty

integration (Lyon, Beaty, Parker, & Mencken, 2005). This research

attempted to replicate Lyon et al.’s (2005) logistic regression model

predicting faculty integration of faith using survey responses gathered

as part of Phase II of the Council for Christian Colleges & Universities

(CCCU) Denominational Study (Rine, Glanzer, & Davignon, 2013).

Respondents included 2,074 faculty from 55 institutions. The first

model used in this study suggested that the most powerful predictors …

Key Performance Indicators Of Part-Time Employees Teaching Online, Mark L. Alexander

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Online learning has caused a seismic shift in higher Education since its rise beginning at the turn of the century. A portion of that impact has been on the ascent of the part-time employee teaching online. Adjunct instructors account for the overwhelming majority of the faculty providing Education to these online learners. Because an instructors performance impacts students learning and their resulting end of course evaluation has such a bearing upon that persons employment, it is imperative to identify key performance indicators (KPIs) of employees teaching online. The problem addressed by this study was to determine the factors that affected …
