All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this quantitative study was to examine the effects of career related stress on higher Education faculty members achievement of a healthy balance between their personal lives and professional lives. Data from the 2013-2014 HERI Faculty Survey were analyzed to determine if any of the eight independent variables—lack of personal time, self-imposed high expectations, teaching load, committee work, research or publishing demands, institutional procedures/red tape, colleagues, and students—significantly predicted work-life balance, the dependent variable. Seven control variables—gender, race, marital status, children, tenure status, institutional class, and institutional status—were also factored into the analysis. This study ultimately sought to …

Creating Learning Opportunities In Open Education: An Exploration Of The Intersections Of Information Literacy And Scholarly Communicationoer: A Field Guide For Academic Librarians, Michelle Reed
UTA Libraries Staff Publications - Archive
Since publication of the Association of College & Research Libraries white paper on the intersections of scholarly communication and information literacy in 2013, a growing number of projects and programs embodying librarianship at the Intersections have been described in library literature. This work has focused primarily on building stronger partnerships between information literacy and scholarly communication librarians, engaging undergraduate students in topics of scholarly communication, and integrating data literacies into outreach and instruction. However, discussion of open education through this lens has been largely absent from the literature. This chapter bridges that gap. It presents the theoretical background of the …

Student And Faculty Perceptions Of University College 100: A College Preparedness Course, Crystal Sullivan
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This qualitative case study took place at Indiana State University, a Midwestern, mid-sized, public university. The sample for this study was made up of students enrolled in University College 100, a college preparedness course taken during the freshman year of a students academic career. With college attrition rates across the nation rising, many public universities are responding. Universities such as University of South Carolina are leading the way for college preparedness by implementing a required, credit-based, college preparedness course for first-time incoming freshmen. Indiana State University has such a course, not required for all freshmen to complete. Class observations took …

Data Driven Composites: The Challenge And Paths Forwards, Muthu Ram Prabhu Elenchezhian, Vamsee Vadlamudi, Rassel Raihan, Kenneth Reifsnider
Institute of Predictive Performance Methodologies (IPPM-UTARI)-Archive
The concept of “data driven” grew out of the general subject of data analytics, especially in the business world. The classical sequence proposed by Dykes (2010) shown below illustrates the general contents of the concept. Indeed, the idea of “predictive modeling” of the future behavior of a system has strong roots in the business community. In general, for engineering and other fields, the data driven challenge is to use the past with information from the present to predict the future behavior of a system. In turn, the user must pay for collection and processing, hosting and maintenance of the data, …
Reading Comprehension In Two Accommodated Reading Tasks With College Students With Reading Disabilities, Catherine Wharton
Reading Comprehension In Two Accommodated Reading Tasks With College Students With Reading Disabilities, Catherine Wharton
Graduate Student Dissertations, Theses, Capstones, and Portfolios
Most K-12 post-secondary schools have shifted to exclusively providing a reading comprehension accommodation through assistive technology because it outweighs the burden of a tutor/reader. However, very little research has been conducted to examine the effects of assistive technology accommodations on reading comprehension and, of research conducted, there appears to be significant discrepancy of what accommodations are provided for specific diagnoses and how much these accommodations benefit the student. Hence, students are regularly provided accommodations that are not beneficial to them. Thus, a need exists to provide some structure in appropriately accommodating students with reading disabilities in a post-secondary setting. This …

Educational Leadership & Workforce Development Theses & Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to explore the effects of faculty and staff mentoring on high-risk community college student self-efficacy, support systems and persistence and identifying the attitudes and behaviors of successful faculty and staff mentors. Using a phenomenological qualitative approach, twenty-two successful high-risk students from one urban community college were interviewed and asked to identify and describe someone on campus who had been most influential in their ability to persist. The twenty-six community college faculty and staff personnel identified by these students were interviewed to learn what they do to help students succeed and persist. Four themes emerged …

A Demands And Resources Approach To Understanding Faculty Turnover Intentions Due To Work–Family Balance, Megumi Watanabe, Christina Falci
A Demands And Resources Approach To Understanding Faculty Turnover Intentions Due To Work–Family Balance, Megumi Watanabe, Christina Falci
Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications
Using data collected on tenure-line faculty at a research-intensive Midwestern university, this study explored predictors of faculty job turnover intentions due to a desire for a better work–family balance. We adopted Voydanoff’s theoretical framework and included demands and resources both within and spanning across the work and family domains. Results showed that work-related demands and resources were much stronger predictors of work–family turnover intentions than family-related demands or resources. Specifically, work-to-family negative spillover was positively associated with work–family turnover intentions, and two work-related resources (job satisfaction and supportive work–family culture) were negatively associated with work–family turnover intentions. On the other …
Faculty And Staff Perceptions About Concealed Carry Initiatives And Their Effect On Campus Safety: A Multi-State Examination, Heidi Marie Ahl-Quanbeck
Faculty And Staff Perceptions About Concealed Carry Initiatives And Their Effect On Campus Safety: A Multi-State Examination, Heidi Marie Ahl-Quanbeck
Theses and Dissertations
Concealed carry on campus is a polarizing debate affecting higher education today. Concealed carry refers to the carrying of a weapon in public while concealed from view. Prompted by isolated instances of gun violence as well as the changing gun culture within our society, ten states now permit weapons on campus as a result of legislation or institutional policy. Yet, little is known about faculty and staff perspectives on concealed carry on campus initiatives or how weapons could affect perceptions about campus safety. The purpose of this study is to better understand faculty and staff perspectives on concealed carry, to …

Effects Of Yoga On Thalamic Gamma-Aminobutyric Acid, Mood And Depression: Analysis Of Two Randomized Controlled Trials, Chris C. Streeter, Patricia L. Gerbarg, Greylin H. Nielsen, Richard P. Brown, J Eric Jensen, Marisa M. Silveri
NYMC Faculty Publications
Objective: The Vagal-Gamma-Aminobutyric Acid (GABA) theory proposes that some yoga postures and breathing practices exert their effects through stimulation of vagal nerves (parasympathetic system) with associated brain GABA increases. To evaluate this theory, we compared results from a 12-week randomized controlled trial (RCT) of yoga in participants with Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) with those of a similar RCT in healthy control participants (HC).
Methods: In an RCT, magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) and mood measures were acquired in subjects with MDD (n=15) prior to and following a 12-week yoga intervention. The same measures were obtained in the HC (n=17) group. In …

Collaboration In The Midst Of Change: Growing Librarian-Archivist Partnerships For Engaging New Students And Faculty, Karen E. Viars, Amanda G. Pellerin
Collaborative Librarianship
Collaboration between librarians and archivists is a valuable way to share expertise and effort when instructing first-year English students on research skills they will need to succeed in college. It is also vital to orienting new faculty to library and archive resources for their scholarship and teaching, as well as encouraging students to value the library and archives resources and knowledge. The unique first-year English program at the Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech) provides a constantly renewing pool of both new students and faculty members. This article identifies common themes in library and archive instruction and key elements of …

The purpose of this paper is to provide a project overview for the implementation of a disability training module and simulation experience offered to university school of nursing faculty to increase faculty knowledge and empathy related to nursing students with learning disabilities. The number of students with learning disabilities in the postsecondary education setting has tripled in the past decade (Orr & Hammig, 2009). This growing student population makes faculty preparation essential in order to effectively meet the needs of these students. The literature indicated that best practices include disability training, faculty support, student support, inclusive strategies such as Universal …
Key Performance Indicators Of Part-Time Employees Teaching Online, Mark L. Alexander
Key Performance Indicators Of Part-Time Employees Teaching Online, Mark L. Alexander
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Online learning has caused a seismic shift in higher education since its rise beginning at the turn of the century. A portion of that impact has been on the ascent of the part-time employee teaching online. Adjunct instructors account for the overwhelming majority of the faculty providing education to these online learners. Because an instructor’s performance impacts students’ learning and their resulting end of course evaluation has such a bearing upon that person’s employment, it is imperative to identify key performance indicators (KPIs) of employees teaching online. The problem addressed by this study was to determine the factors that affected …

Race And Sexual Orientation Lssues In Graduate Classrooms: How Faculty In Psychology Experience Them Emerging Alongside One Another, Raymond L. Sheets Jr.
Dissertations
The inclusion of sexual orientation and race-related issues into mainstream psychology has gained much needed momentum in recent years. The field of counseling psychology, in particular, has helped fuel this momentum with its appreciation for, and commitment to, developing academic and applied psychologists who attend to an evolving multicultural society. Within the academic environment, faculty members have the responsibility of facilitating student learning in their respective classrooms; this facilitation becomes challenging in the face of emotionally charged topics such as race and sexual orientation. How then do graduate faculty who teach these courses experience race and sexual orientation comingling within …

Family Practice Resident Expectations By Year From Faculty And Resident Perspectives: A Quality Improvement Initiative, Alyssa Krueger, Devin Lee, Jessica J.F. Kram, Will Lehmann, Dennis J. Baumgardner
Journal of Patient-Centered Research and Reviews
Background: The transition from student to physician requires substantial commitment and work from residents as well as guidance from program faculty. The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) has standardized certain academic requirements for U.S. residency programs; however, faculty expectations of residents according to year in the program are less formal and more a hidden curriculum. Setting expectations for residents to consult could better help residents navigate their graduate medical education experience and achieve the level of excellence expected by ACGME.
Purpose: Our quality improvement study aimed to: 1) determine what the expectations of family practice residents were based …

Late-stage diagnosis of lung cancer occurs ~95% of the time due to late manifestation of its symptoms, necessitating rigorous treatment following diagnosis. Existing treatment methods are limited by lack of specificity, systemic toxicity, temporary remission, and radio-resistance in lung cancer cells. In this research, we have developed a folate receptor-targeting multifunctional dual drug-loaded nanoparticle (MDNP) containing a poly(N-isopropylacrylamide)-carboxymethyl chitosan shell and poly lactic-coglycolic acid (PLGA) core for enhancing localized chemo-radiotherapy to effectively treat lung cancers. The formulation provided controlled releases of the encapsulated therapeutic compounds, NU7441 - a potent radiosensitizer, and gemcitabine - an FDA approved chemotherapeutic drug for lung …
