"We Don't Work For Free": Tenured Faculty Engagement In Assessment Initiatives On A Unionized Community College Campus, Lauren Kosrow

Dissertations

This case study, which included faculty and administrator interviews as well as an exploration of institutional documents and faculty meeting spaces, examined what influences a tenured faculty member’s decision to engage with assessment initiatives at Midwest Community College and what senior leaders can do to successfully engage tenured faculty in these efforts. Principal-agent theory (PAT) offers an important and helpful framework for considering how senior leadership can successfully engage tenured faculty in student learning outcomes assessment on this specific unionized community college campus. The findings of this study suggest that senior leaders must leverage both incentives and monitoring to successfully …

Graduate Occupational Therapy Students & Information Literacy: Does A Research Consultation Increase Information Literacy Skills While Lowering Library Anxiety?, Mary C. Rickelman, Christine Moghimi

Transforming Libraries for Graduate Students

In today’s academic environment, students equipped with self-regulated learning and information literacy skills have an excellent opportunity for professional success, given our current information-based practices in health care. Information literacy instruction provided to students early in their coursework will aide them in acquiring competency for the remainder of their studies, especially scholarly projects. Along with information literacy issues, library anxiety has been identified in the literature as a contributing factor to poor academic performance in students. The purpose of this study was to explore components of library anxiety, if present, as well as to help students become more comfortable and …

Multiculturalism And Diversity Issues In Applied Behavior Analysis, Brian M. Conners

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

The topic of training in diversity and multiculturalism in the field of applied behavior analysis (ABA) has only been discussed within recent years. Minimal research has examined this topic particularly within the scope of training at the graduate level in higher education. Therefore, this paper focuses on examining full time ABA faculty perceptions of multiculturalism and diversity training within their own graduate programs. Furthermore, this paper also presents a call to action related to diversity issues in the field of ABA in terms of graduate students and graduate preparation training and curriculum.

Evidence-Based Testing Practices In Nursing Education: Does Faculty Experience Count?, Wendy L. Moore

Nursing Education Research Conference (NERC)

Nurse faculty make important decisions about student academic performance and progression. Faculty-developed written exams remain the most important assessment strategy in nursing programs. Given the high-stakes nature of nursing exams, it is imperative that they are evidence-based. However, little is know about faculty who implement evidence-based testing practices most often.

The Effects Of Plastics Intake On Drosophila, Gabriela De Moraes, Tal Gir, Carolina Landa Perez, Raymond Mackuol, Kimberly D. Rowland

Faculty and Staff Publications & Presentations

Drosophila melanogaster is commonly used as a model organism to study countless human health-related issues and concerns (Pandey et al., 2011. From a global aspect, pollution, in all its forms, is an ever-growing concern. In particular, plastics, due to their incapability to decompose, has raised many questions pertaining to the effect this will have on our already struggling planet and ultimately what those effects mean for the human race. Plastics are composed of a group of chemicals known as phthalates which allow the material to be as flexible and durable as it is. Phthalates are also used in a widespread …

An Analysis Of Campus Services For International Students At Institutions In The Midwest, Sylvia Miriyam Findlay Feb 2020

An Analysis Of Campus Services For International Students At Institutions In The Midwest, Sylvia Miriyam Findlay

Theses and Dissertations

Higher education campuses are becoming ethnoculturally diverse with the influx of international students from various parts of the world and must modify their international student recruitment and enrollment strategies in response to this trend. The purpose of this study was to examine the perceptions of student affairs personnel to campus services for international students by comparing what should be provided to what is being offered. The study also attempts to identify the gap in their perceptions. Services identified in the literature were examined using the Briggs and Ammigan (2017) collaborative programming and outreach model, which combined concepts of student engagement …

Dynamical Role Of Pivotal Brain Regions In Parkinson Symptomatology Uncovered With Deep Learning, Alex A. Nguyen, Pedro D. Maia, Xiao Gao, Pablo F. Damasceno, Ashish Raj

Mathematics Faculty Publications - Archive

The release of a broad, longitudinal anatomical dataset by the Parkinson’s Progression Markers Initiative promoted a surge of machine-learning studies aimed at predicting disease onset and progression. However, the excessive number of features used in these models often conceals their relationship to the Parkinsonian symptomatology. Objectives: The aim of this study is two-fold: (i) to predict future motor and cognitive impairments up to four years from brain features acquired at baseline; and (ii) to interpret the role of pivotal brain regions responsible for different symptoms from a neurological viewpoint. Methods: We test several deep-learning neural network configurations, and report our …

Comparison Between Faculty And Student Perception Of Instructor Presence In Online Courses, Samantha D. Penney

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Each year more reports indicate that online programs are in demand. These programs are sought after by the population to fit into their lives. As a result, concern for quality online courses is at the forefront of the higher education industry. This also increases the concerns for how to teach online classes and how to engage the students in the course materials. The theoretical construct of community of inquiry (CoI) determines that engagement or interaction. This study compares the similarities and differences of CoI experienced by faculty and students. The study uses each of the CoI types of presence: social, …

Exploring Faculty Perceptions Of Campus Climate Before And After A Consolidation, Stephanie Denise Watson Jan 2020

Exploring Faculty Perceptions Of Campus Climate Before And After A Consolidation, Stephanie Denise Watson

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Consolidations have become a market strategy for both public and private higher education institutions as a way of rebranding to address financial challenges and to remain competitive. Challenges arise when faculty and staff members are expected to merge the racial climates of a non-historically black college and university (NHBCU) and a historically black college and university (HBCU). The purpose of this study was to gain a better understanding of issues related to inclusion, campus interactions, and diverse campus groups following the consolidation. The racial campus climate framework by Hurtado, Milem, Clayton-Pedersen, and Allen served as the conceptual framework for this …
