To Teach Or Not To Teach Online, William Robertson

Departmental Papers (TE)

The use of online course delivery has been promoted at many institutions of higher education as a way to provide greater access to students in a variety of degree programs. The lack of emphasis of online pedagogical strategies has left many faculty members to not consider teaching online, while administrators look for ways to increase revenue through enrollment with limited classroom space on campus. In this paper, the reasons faculty who have taught not online are explored and examined, while providing insight into the motivations of teaching online that could lead to increased participation within distance learning frameworks. Currently, universities …

Simulation: An Effective Tool For Mentoring The Novice Nursing Faculty, Charlene B. Smith, Jeanne Hamner, Carol Hession, Cari Granier, Travis "Pete" Lewis, Ashley Thibodeaux

Journal of Interprofessional Practice and Collaboration

Abstract

The American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) (2019) reported in 2018-2019, U.S. nursing schools turned away more than 75,000 qualified applicants from baccalaureate and graduate nursing programs due to insufficient numbers of faculty and clinical sites. Two-thirds of the nursing schools related a shortage of nursing faculty and/or clinical preceptors as a reason for not admitting qualified applicants (AACN, 2019).

There is a triad of challenges facing nursing today. The evolving triad is a nursing shortage, a lack of clinical facilities and nursing faculty. Nursing education must increase enrollment to fulfill the upcoming nursing shortage. Nursing schools are …

Unsupervised Learning Methods For Identification Of Defects In Heterogeneous Materials, Muthu Ram Prabhu Elenchezhian, Vamsee Vadlamudi, Rassel Raihan, Kenneth Reifsnider Sep 2020

Unsupervised Learning Methods For Identification Of Defects In Heterogeneous Materials, Muthu Ram Prabhu Elenchezhian, Vamsee Vadlamudi, Rassel Raihan, Kenneth Reifsnider

Institute of Predictive Performance Methodologies (IPPM-UTARI)-Archive

The complexity of composite materials due to the nature of their numerous laminated layers, stacking sequences, type of fibers, resin, and other external factors has challenged the world of structural health monitoring (SHM) and non-destructive inspection (NDI). Post-processing of these SHM and NDI methods has been mostly a manual time-consuming process, with human inspection causing errors associated with the bias decision made by NDI inspectors. Recent advances also call for Cure On The Fly (COTF), by integrating NDI with advanced technologies and analysis techniques such as Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) for on-line real-time predictions of a defect, …

Self-Reported Stress And Coping Strategies Of Occupational Therapy Faculty Employed At Or Graduated From A Large Midwestern United States University, Maura F. Tobin, Steven D. Taff Sep 2020

Self-Reported Stress And Coping Strategies Of Occupational Therapy Faculty Employed At Or Graduated From A Large Midwestern United States University, Maura F. Tobin, Steven D. Taff

Health Professions Education

Purpose: As occupational therapy programs grow, both in number of students and level of education provided, occupational therapy faculty face increasing workload expectations. Though the literature shows an increase in faculty workload across higher education, there is little research on how that increase is impacting faculty performance. This study explores current stress levels, how faculty use coping mechanisms to manage their stress levels, and what steps are still needed to support faculty at this time. Method: Occupational therapy faculty were surveyed using a combination of the Perceived Stress Scale 10 item questionnaire, the Brief COPE, and short answer and multiple-choice …

Communication Sciences And Disorders Faculty Perceptions Of Interprofessional Education, Janine L. Schmedding-Bartley, Courtney Karasinski

Teaching and Learning in Communication Sciences & Disorders

Engagement in interprofessional collaborative practice is critical for communication disorders professionals to provide quality clinical services. Given limited research on implementation of interprofessional education (IPE) within communication disorders pre-professional training programs and research highlighting potential barriers to implementation of IPE, this investigation assessed communication sciences and disorders (CSD) faculty attitudes toward IPE. One hundred fifty-eight CSD faculty from accredited CSD graduate programs completed the Interprofessional Attitudes Scale (Norris, Carpenter, Eaton, Guo, Lassche, Pett, & Blumenthal, 2016). Collectively, the faculty supported CSD students learning from and with students from different disciplines and endorsed IPE as beneficial. Faculty with master’s degrees were …

Using University Research in Food Science to Study their Characteristics and to Model the Research and Information Needs of Researchers.

Making collection management decisions of resources is important and challenging. The challenges arise from finding the balance between the mission of libraries to meet the needs of a wide range of users; the high cost of subscription to journals and databases; the escalating annual increases imposed by publishers, and limited budget for collection management activities.

By identifying and analyzing the research output from faculty and graduate students from the Food Science Department to determine where they published and the sources …

The Perceptions Of Participation In A Mentored Title I Elementary String Instrumental Music Program, Manuel C. Capote Jul 2020

The Perceptions Of Participation In A Mentored Title I Elementary String Instrumental Music Program, Manuel C. Capote

Graduate Student Dissertations, Theses, Capstones, and Portfolios

When elementary school-aged students want to learn to play a string instrument, they have the option to rent or purchase one, take private lessons, practice at home, and participate in their school orchestra program. In order for students to accomplish this, parental economic support and involvement is essential. Underserved Title I elementary school students without this socioeconomic support are at a distinct disadvantage: They do not have the parental socioeconomic support necessary to acquire an instrument and pay for private lessons. A string instrumental mentoring program aims to provide private instruction with mentors, free of charge, to those Title I …

A Microsoft Teams Case Study: Implementing A Collaborative Tool For Reference & Instruction, Laura Haygood, A.M. Serrano

UTA Libraries Staff Publications - Archive

Presented at STEM Librarians South 2020 Virtual Conference. The University of Texas at Arlington has the largest not-for-profit nursing program in the United States, totaling 24,941 students. Many of these students are online learners who are not learning information literacy and database searching the way their on-campus peers are. To address this gap, librarians at UTA considered alternative methods for reference and instruction. UTA Libraries chose Microsoft Teams for online instruction for multiple reasons. As a university-approved communication method, Teams replaces a hodgepodge of unapproved tools, thus creating a centralized space for collaborative work. In Teams, users may share files, …

A Strategic Plan To Thread Genomics Competencies Into Undergraduate Curriculum, Holly Mathis Jul 2020

A Strategic Plan To Thread Genomics Competencies Into Undergraduate Curriculum, Holly Mathis

Dissertations

Problem: Genomics in undergraduate nursing education has experienced slow adoption in the United States. Various approaches have been proposed but do not address barriers to successful implementation.

Methods: A strategic plan was developed to increase the amount of genetics and genomic content in the curriculum of an undergraduate nursing program. A gap analysis was performed on the curriculum revealing a paucity of content. A SWOT analysis informed the strategic plan, which included a faculty education program using the ANA/ISONG’s Essentials of Genetic and Genomic Nursing: Competencies, Curricula Guidelines and Outcome Indicators (2nd ed.) (2009) as a foundation.

Results: Faculty …

Origins Of Atrophy In Parkinson Linked To Early Onset And Local Transcription Patterns, Pedro D. Maia, Sneha Pandya, Benjamin Freeze, Justin Torok, Ajay Gupta, Yashar Zeighami, Ashish Raj

Mathematics Faculty Publications - Archive

There is enormous clinical value in inferring the brain regions initially atrophied in Parkinson disease for individual patients and understanding its relationship with clinical and genetic risk factors. The aim of this study is to leverage a new seed-inference algorithm demonstrated for Alzheimer’s disease to the Parkinsonian context and to cluster patients in meaningful subgroups based on these incipient atrophy patterns. Instead of testing brain regions separately as the likely initiation site for each patient, we solve an L1-penalized optimization problem that can return a more predictive heterogeneous, multi-locus seed patterns. A cluster analysis of the individual seed patterns reveals …

Self-Determination Theory And Faculty Behavior: A Quantitative Study Of Faculty Leaders' Use Of Assessment Evidence, Joseph D. Levy Jun 2020

Self-Determination Theory And Faculty Behavior: A Quantitative Study Of Faculty Leaders' Use Of Assessment Evidence, Joseph D. Levy

Dissertations

Despite assessment of student learning being essential work in higher education, a number of institutions have noted faculty could more effectively be using assessment results (Jankowski et al., 2018; Kuh et al., 2015; Metzler & Kurz, 2019; Suskie, 2014). This study applied Self-Determination Theory (SDT) as a theoretical framework to provide context for faculty behavior associated with assessment actions (Fuller et al., 2016; Ryan & Deci, 2000). Mostly quantitative data were collected via electronic survey of faculty program leaders at a single institution, National Louis University (NLU). Results indicated a significant and positive relationship suggesting an increase in meeting the …

Network Mediation Of Pathology Pattern In Sporadic Creutzfeldt–Jakob Disease, Benjamin Freeze, Pedro Maia, Sneha Pandya, Ashish Raj May 2020

Network Mediation Of Pathology Pattern In Sporadic Creutzfeldt–Jakob Disease, Benjamin Freeze, Pedro Maia, Sneha Pandya, Ashish Raj

Mathematics Faculty Publications - Archive

Sporadic Creutzfeldt–Jakob disease is a rare fatal rapidly progressive dementia caused by the accumulation and spread of pathologically misfolded prions. Evidence from animal models and in vitro experiments suggests that prion pathology propagates along neural connectivity pathways, with the transmission of misfolded prions initiating a corruptive templating process in newly encountered brain regions. Although particular regional patterns of disease have been recognized in humans, the underlying mechanistic basis of these patterns remains poorly understood. Here, we demonstrate that the spatial pattern of disease derived from publicly available human diffusion-weighted MRI data demonstrates stereotypical features across patient cohorts and can be …

A Case Study Of The Experiences Of Black Female Faculty At Research-Intensive Schools Of Social Work, Lashawnda N. Fields May 2020

A Case Study Of The Experiences Of Black Female Faculty At Research-Intensive Schools Of Social Work, Lashawnda N. Fields

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Representation has improved over the past 40 years among Black female faculty members in social work schools; however, low academic rank and distribution of this demographic across institutions is one way in which predominately White institutions (PWI) of higher education perpetuate racial inequalities. Higher education, in general, continues to result in negative experiences and poor outcomes for Black female faculty members such as time to tenure, low academic rank, and feelings of isolation. However, little is known about the experiences of this demographic in schools of social work, particularly those identified as research-intensive (R-1) Carnegie-designated institutions of higher education. This …
