Coupled Effects In Dielectric And Thermal Properties Of Polymer Matrix Composite Structures Due To Moisture Absorption, Partha Pratim Das, Monjur Morshed Rabby, Vamsee Vadlamudi, Kenneth Reifsnider, Rassel Raihan
Institute of Predictive Performance Methodologies (IPPM-UTARI)-Archive
Fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) composites are being used in number of fields including aerospace, marine, sports, medical, power sectors, etc. due to their lightweight nature while retaining high mechanical performance in terms of high specific strength, stiffness, and great fatigue properties. However, the applicability of these materials is restricted by their stability up to a certain temperature (i.e. glass transition temperature) and environmental degradation (i.e. moisture, UV light, etc.). Moisture ingression greatly reduces their mechanical properties altering material structure by causing polymer plasticization, chain scission and fiber-polymer interface deterioration. These changes instantaneously affect the thermal properties of the materials which …

The Effect Of Plasma Treatment On The Cure Behavior Of Out-Of-Life Prepregs And An Investigation Of The Mechanical Properties Of Composite Parts Manufactured From Plasma-Treated Prepregs, Monjur Morshed Rabby, Partha Pratim Das, Minhazur Rahman, Vamsee Vadlamudi, Rassel Raihan
Institute of Predictive Performance Methodologies (IPPM-UTARI)-Archive
Many industries, including aircraft, automobiles, and marine, are using prepreg (pre-impregnated fibers and a partially cured polymer matrix) to manufacture composite parts to achieve optimum fiber and resin volume ratio and part repeatability. Since prepregs have a short out oflife (i.e., the maximum storing time allowed at room temperature), they must be stored in refrigerators at low temperatures, which, if not maintained, have an unfavorable influence on the intended quality of the final product. For the present study, glass/epoxy prepregs (expired out-life) were plasmatreated before being used to make the composite part to compensate for the room temperature aging effect. …

Mothers’ perceptions of mothering could potentially influence several aspects of their home and work commitments. This study explores how mothers perceive their mothering experiences during the COVID-19 pandemic via 18 in-depth interviews. The authors use constraint theory and negotiation frameworks to discuss how family communication processes and perceptions of mothering are related within the context of the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States. Findings demonstrated how working from home increased perceptions of family tensions, especially with the lack of home/work separation. Throughout the narratives, participants describe specific constraints at the intrapersonal, interpersonal, and structural levels, as …

Researcher reflexivity is not a new concept in qualitative research. However, how/if researchers engage in that reflexivity varies. In this essay, the authors engage in reflexivity about a research project they conducted together. The previous project consisted of semi-structured interviews with U.S.-based mothers regarding their perceptions about motherhood. We then used intensive motherhood as a theoretical lens through which we analyzed the interviews. The project also encompassed mothers’ perceptions during the COVID-19 global pandemic. Through duoethnography, the researchers reflexively consider major dead angles of their project, challenges they faced, and what reflexivity brings to the forefront. They further reflect on …

Accelerated Courses And Barriers To Persistence For Traditional-Age College Students, Clarissa Davis-Ragland
Accelerated Courses And Barriers To Persistence For Traditional-Age College Students, Clarissa Davis-Ragland
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
AbstractOffering 8-week courses in a traditional 16-week semester schedule supports degree completion; however, traditional-age students, who belonged to Generation Z, at a Southwest community college indicated a preference for 16-week courses. The problem investigated in this study was that traditional-age college students experienced barriers to completing accelerated 8-week courses at this institution. The purpose of this basic qualitative study was to explore the in-class and out-of-class barriers these college students experienced that impacted their motivation to persist in accelerated 8-week courses. The conceptual framework was Rendón’s validation theory, which described students’ intentional, proactive affirmation by in- and out-of-class college agents. …

University Faculty Experiences: Workplace And Personal Stress, Stress Management, And Coping, Whitney Matthews Gass
Theses and Dissertations
University faculty have work responsibilities and duties that encompass teaching, research (scholarship), and service and experience pressure from administrators, students, institutions, and disciplines. They also have expectations placed on them outside of their institutions by their families, peers, and communities. A gap exists in the literature regarding the workplace and personal stressors that university faculty experience including the coping strategies they employ to manage stress. This qualitative study utilized a general strain theory framework for guidance and modified informal conversational interviews with University of Arkansas at Little Rock (UA Little Rock) faculty. Interview questions were about the lived workplace and …

Accelerators, such as GPU, are a scarce resource in deep learning (DL). Effectively and efficiently sharing GPU leads to improved hardware utilization as well as user experiences, who may need to wait for hours to access GPU before a long training job is done. Spatial and temporal multitasking on GPU have been studied in the literature, but popular deep learning frameworks, such as TensorFlow and PyTorch, lack the support of GPU sharing among multiple DL models, which are typically represented as computation graphs, heavily optimized by underlying DL libraries, and run on a complex pipeline spanning CPU and GPU. Getting Your Feet Wet: Barriers To Inclusivity In Underwater Archaeology And How To Break Them, Ashley Lemke, Nicole Grinnan, Jay Haigler
Cambridge University Press Open Access Agreement Publications-Archive
There is a lack of broad representation in archaeology generally, and in a specialized field such as underwater archaeology, this issue is only exacerbated. Underwater archaeological sites are often “out of sight, out of mind,“” creating a general lack of awareness of underwater cultural heritage and career prospects in many communities. Coupled with a lack of education and the additional demands of working in a submerged environment (e.g., scuba diving), there is a striking lack of diversity in underwater archaeology. Overall, underwater archae-ologists are a largely homogeneous group, particularly along the lines of race and wealth—categories that often overlap. In …

This study presents Periscope, a novel side-channel attack that exploits human-coupled electromagnetic (EM) emanations from touchscreens to infer sensitive inputs on a mobile device. Periscope is motivated by the observation that finger movement over the touchscreen leads to time-varying coupling between these two. Consequently, it impacts the screen’s EM emanations that can be picked up by a remote sensory device. We intend to map between EM measurements and finger movements to recover the inputs. As the significant technical contribution of this work, we build an analytic model that outputs finger movement trajectories based on given EM readings. Our approach does …

The problem of many-over-one asks how it can be that many properties are ever instantiated by one object. A putative solution might, for example, claim that the properties are appropriately bundled, or somehow tied to a bare particular. In this essay, the author argues that, surprisingly, an extant candidate solution to this problem is at the same time an independently developed candidate solution to the mind-body problem. Specifically, what is argued here to be the best version of the relata-specific bundle theory—the thesis that each instance of compresence has a special intrinsic nature in virtue of which it necessarily bundles …

Email is one of the most prolific forms of communication in the world. As colleges and universities move more student experiences online, faculty members and advisors need to understand how to best communicate with students. In an attempt to understand how faculty and advisors write, and, more importantly, how students read, I developed this two-phase mixed methods investigation. In Phase I, I collected nine writing samples from 19 faculty and advisor participants and dissected the samples with Pennebaker Conglomerate’s 2015 Linguistic Inquiry and Word Count (LIWC) program. In a transition phase, I leveraged Phase I data to create an instrument …
