How An Environmental Crisis Catalyzed Community-Led Planning To Address Racial Inequities: A Case Study Of Shingle Mountain, In Southern Dallas, Evelyn Mayo
Planning Masters Professional Reports - Archive
Equity is one of the “Four E’s” representing the core values for planning at the City of Dallas, Texas (City of Dallas, Core Values). However, many neighborhoods in Southern Dallas endure environmental injustices partly because land use planning ignores or disregards the needs of low-income communities of color. This report examines the Shingle Mountain environmental justice crisis in Southern Dallas to illuminate the environmental injustices that the community of Floral Farms has endured partly due to misguided planning and the neglect of the city of Dallas. The study focuses on examining how the grassroots, community-led land use plan developed by residents …

Conductive thread is a common material in e-textile toolkits that allows practitioners to create connections between electronic components sewn on fabric. When powered, conductive threads are used as resistive heaters to activate thermochromic dyes or pigments on textiles to create interactive, aesthetic, and ambient textile displays. In this work, we introduce Embr, a creative framework for supporting hand-embroidered liquid crystal textile displays (LCTDs). This framework includes a characterization of conductive embroidery stitches, an expanded repertoire of thermal formgiving techniques, and a thread modeling tool used to simulate mechanical, thermal, and electrical behaviors of LCTDs. Through exemplar artifacts, we annotate a …

Pandemic Issues: Faculty Value Alignment And Burnout, Eu Gene Chin, Brooke Hildebrand Clubbs
Journal of Educational Research and Practice
Burnout among faculty members impacts physical, cognitive, and emotional functioning and has negative socioeconomic consequences downstream. Prior to the pandemic, faculty members were already reporting high levels of burnout, which is characterized by depersonalization, emotional exhaustion, and a lack of personal accomplishment. Previous research reported that value incongruence functions as one of the strongest predictors of depersonalization (and subsequently) turnover intention. This study provides a snapshot of the value alignment and burnout of faculty at a regional public university in the months following the pandemic-induced pivot to remote learning. Results from our survey of faculty members (N = 58) suggest …

Modern database systems suffer from compromised throughput, persistent unfair I/O processing and unpredictable, high latency variability of user requests as a result of mismatches between highly scaled user parallel I/O and the I/O capacity afforded by the database and its underlying storage I/O stack. To address this problem, we introduce an efficient user-centric QoS-aware scheduling shim, called AppleS, for user-level fine-grained I/O regulation that delivers the right amount and pattern of user parallel I/O requests to the database system and supports user SLOs with high-level performance isolation and reduced I/O resource contention. It is designed to enable database systems to …

We present a comprehensive and in-depth study of Intel Optane DC persistent memory (DCPMM). Our focus is on exploring the internal design of Optane’s on-DIMM readwrite buffering and its impacts on application-perceived performance, read and write amplifications, the overhead of different types of persists, and the tradeoffs between persistency models. While our measurements confirm the results of the existing profiling studies, we have new discoveries and offer new insights. Notably, we find that read and write are managed differently in separate on-DIMM read and write buffers. Comparable in size, the two buffers serve distinct purposes. The read buffer offers higher …

As virtual reality (VR) offers an unprecedented experience than any existing multimedia technologies, VR videos, or called 360-degree videos, have attracted considerable attention from academia and industry. How to quantify and model end users' perceived quality in watching 360-degree videos, or called QoE, resides the center for high-quality provisioning of these multimedia services. In this work, we present EyeQoE, a novel QoE assessment model for 360-degree videos using ocular behaviors. Unlike prior approaches, which mostly rely on objective factors, EyeQoE leverages the new ocular sensing modality to comprehensively capture both subjective and objective impact factors for QoE modeling. We propose …

Given the relatively invisible yet growing presence of international academics on U.S. campuses, this study investigates the lived negotiations of “international instructors” across disciplines via critical communication pedagogy (CCP) as aligned with a pedagogy of cultural wealth. We place “international instructors” within quotation marks to challenge a territorial linear logic of the world, and also to facilitate a new space for rethinking academic labors and capitals. Aligned with a pedagogy of cultural wealth, CCP with key commitments to identity, power, culture, and language in the context of pedagogy is an appropriate lens to examine the lived experiences of “international instructors” …

Even before COVID-19, women around the world performed more unpaid domestic labor, specifically unpaid care labor, than men. COVID-19 has only exacerbated the gender gap in this domestic labor. For Western women, especially mothers in the United States of America, the normative discourse of intensive motherhood and the gendered pressure inherent in the unrealistic standards set by the discourse have only increased the amount of unpaid domestic and care labor required of mothers. Using qualitative, in-depth interviews with 18 mothers during May–June 2020, this study examines privileged mothers’ perceptions of what they did well in parenting both before and during …

Embedded systems have become prominent targets for cyberattacks. To exploit firmware’s memory corruption vulnerabilities, cybercriminals harvest reusable code gadgets from the large shared library codebase (e.g., uClibc). Unfortunately, unlike their desktop counterparts, embedded systems lack essential computing resources to enforce security hardening techniques. Recently, we have witnessed a surge of software debloating as a new defense mechanism against code-reuse attacks; it erases unused code to significantly diminish the possibilities of constructing reusable gadgets. Because of the single firmware image update style, static library debloating shows promise to fortify embedded systems without compromising performance and forward compatibility. However, static library debloating …

The “material turn” in HCI has placed a renewed focus on informing design from the relationships found in material-based interactions. While several ethnographic works provide insight into how practitioners converse with materials, it is less understood how these conversations transform into a skilled practitioner’s relationship with a material. We examine the material practice of glazing that gives ceramics its decorative and functional characteristics and involves fusing mixtures of silica, alumina, and flux onto a clay body through kiln firing. This practice evolves over decades developing from multiple trajectories including theoretical foundations, systematic experimentation, and happy accidents. This work describes virtual …

The Statistical Impact Of Faculty Mentoring Programs On Ninth Grade Student Achievement, Kevin Miller
Theses and Dissertations
Students’ transition from middle to high school is challenging on many levels. Research has shown that students who perform poorly academically during their freshman year are more likely to graduate later or drop out of school altogether. By studying the literature surrounding the transition to high school, I will identify elements of effective transition programs (the totality of transition activities a district employs). This will be a convergent mixed method study, where I will use Social Support theory as a framework to examine the statistical significance of faculty mentoring programs impact on grade student achievement during the 2018-2019 school year. …

Faculty Facilitation Of Help-Seeking On Campus: A Phenomenological Study, Lillian V. Clark
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
An ever-increasing number of students on college campuses are experiencing distress, and not all students in need of care are being reached (Kitzrow, 2009, LeViness, et al., 2019). Faculty are one of the most valuable resources for identifying and connecting students to care (Kitzrow, 2009). Despite this, we know very little about the experiences of faculty working with students in distress. This study sought to understand those experiences, as well as identify the barriers to connecting students to care. A qualitative study using an Interpretive Phenomenology framework was conducted (Smith & Osborn, 2007, Moustakas, 1994). Four themes were interpreted from …

This essay builds on Lawless’s call to name and chronicle emotional work. The authors draw attention to the emotional labor that has become an institutional expectation of the academic position, particularly among people with marginalized identities, to name this labor as such and to use this documentation as evidence for compensation. The authors’ emotional labor is grounded in critical communication pedagogy (CCP), which compels them to engage in a fundamentally different form of emotional labor, one that depends on relationship-building and the recognition of systemic and structural forms of oppression through reflexive care and performative listening. This form of emotional …

As individuals who use their privilege to reduce prejudice, educate others about social justice, and actively stop discrimination, faculty allies can play a vital role in transforming universities to be more equitable, diverse, and inclusive. However, discrepancies persist in how faculty define privilege and communicate allyship. Drawing from standpoint theory, we examined discursive divergences in how 105 full-time faculty defined and experienced privilege and how they enacted allyship in the workplace. Participants tended to conceptualize privilege as a set of advantages and lack of structural barriers for people based on their group membership(s). Discursive differences emerged regarding the degree to …

From The Shadows To The Spotlight: Centering The Experiences Of Faculty With (Invisible) Disabilities, Tiffany Gray
West Chester University Doctoral Projects
The absence of research around the experiences of faculty with (invisible) disabilities is critically needed within the academy. Often (invisible) disabilities remain in the shadows because they are non-apparent until publicly disclosed. Equitable access, sustainable resources, and university communications around (invisible) disabilities can impact disclosure decisions.
This social justice mixed methods inquiry used an explanatory sequential design to explore factors that contributed to faculty disclosure and/or non-disclosure of their (invisible) disability(ies). For some faculty, the “choice” around disclosure was non-negotiable as a result of a myriad of reasons, one being their access needs. The overall process, navigation, and decision making …

The principal objective of this study is to employ non-destructive broadband dielectric spectroscopy/impedance spectroscopy and machine learning techniques to estimate the moisture content in FRP composites under hygrothermal aging. Here, classification and regression machine learning models that can accurately predict the current moisture saturation state are developed using the frequency domain dielectric response of the composite, in conjunction with the time domain hygrothermal aging effect. First, to categorize the composites based on the present state of the absorbed moisture supervised classification learning models (i.e., quadratic discriminant analysis (QDA), support vector machine (SVM), and artificial neural network-based multilayer perceptron (MLP) classifier) …

Fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) composites are being used in numerous fields owing to their intrinsic strength to weight ratio and various design benefits. However, these materials are prone to environmental aging, particularly moisture absorption. In essence, absorbed moisture infiltrates the polymer matrix and induces changes in the polymer network through chain scission, plasticization, and other bonding interactions. This causes irreversible damages to the material and significantly decreases mechanical strength. In this study, Broadband Dielectric Spectroscopy (BbDS) has been used to identify the absorption mechanisms in glass fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) composites by detecting the related polarization mechanisms. Here, results show …

Due to continual exposure to moist environment, environmental degradation is a major threat to structural composites throughout their service life. Impedance Spectroscopy (IS)/Broadband Dielectric Spectroscopy (BbDS) is a reliable nondestructive method that has been used in polymer industries for dielectric characterization of material. While moisture absorption causes irreversible changes in the polymer matrix composites, it also alters the electrical properties of the system which is detectable using BbDS. Since the physics that drives the change in electrical characteristics is driven by the modifications imposed by water molecules (whether free or bound), both events can be linked. A dielectric spectrum over …
