Gender Bias In Higher Education: A Case Study Of Rollins College, Zoe Mitchell Jan 2018

Gender Bias In Higher Education: A Case Study Of Rollins College, Zoe Mitchell

Honors Program Theses

This thesis uses ethnographic methods to examine gendered experiences of faculty on college campuses, using Rollins College as a case study. Specifically, I consider how gendered biases, norms, and identities influence the development of one’s career and one’s experiences working in academia and higher education. I examine if experiences of male and female faculty vary, and to what these differences in experience can be attributed. Through my research, I argue that though academia is a often considered a liberal environment, there are nevertheless serious problems relating to gender inequity that plague the experience of faculty members, and the denial of …

The Evolution Of Architecture Faculty Organizational Culture At The University Of Michigan, Linda Mills

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Understanding and navigating the multiple academic disciplines and administrative subcultures, which operate within higher education institutions, is challenging for both internal and external stakeholders who may be unfamiliar with the disparate normative, regulative, and cultural cognitive systems that guide social behavior of each area. Higher education leaders need to understand the cultures operating within the organizational groups and subgroups in order to coordinate, integrate, and foster collaboration toward organizational and institutional goal attainment activities. This case study, which focused on the emergence and evolution of the organizational culture of the architecture faculty at the University of Michigan, provides insights into …

The Poor And Marginalized Among Us: Contingent Faculty In Jesuit Universities, Christina Pawls, Richard D. Clark, Carrie Buchanan

Arts & Sciences Faculty Publications

Faculty of institutions of higher learning have an opportunity to discuss, debate, and discern how to create workplaces that are just and inclusive. As members of Jesuit institutions, wehave a moral obligation to do so. How, then, can Jesuit universities justify the poor treatment of contingent faculty, who are now a majority not just in our institutions but in the country as a whole? Tenure-track employment is a fading tradition in universities throughout the United States. The data also show that non-tenure-track faculty, particularly the growing number of part-time adjunct faculty, constitute a population of marginalized, often poor, employees working alongside more privileged …

I Would Teach It, But I Don't Know How: Faculty Perceptions Of Cultural Competency In The Health Sciences, A Case Study Analysis, Andrew J. Young, Michelle L. Ramirez May 2017

I Would Teach It, But I Don't Know How: Faculty Perceptions Of Cultural Competency In The Health Sciences, A Case Study Analysis, Andrew J. Young, Michelle L. Ramirez

Humboldt Journal of Social Relations

This paper presents results from a survey of faculty perceptions of cultural competency training at “Health Sciences University,” a small, private university in a major city in the Northeastern United States. We found high levels of support among faculty for cultural competency training for students in bench and health sciences broadly, though data suggests that faculty are unsure how to effectively teach cultural competency and how to evaluate its effectiveness. Placing this data alongside literature exploring the lack of diversity and a “chilly climate” in STEM and health science disciplines for marginalized groups, we argue for 1) a need to …

Transforming First-Year Information Literacy: Understanding Authority In A Sea Of Information, Michelle Reed, Jill Becker, Stephanie Gamble, Sofia Leung

UTA Libraries Staff Publications - Archive

This panel will discuss a university library's development and implementation of a 3-day information literacy unit that was integrated into 45 sections of the university's first-year experience seminar. Since 2012, the model of support for this course was a hands-on database searching session for each section of the course. Several factors warranted the revision of the information literacy component of the course. One, the model was not sustainable. A reduction in library staff strained the library's human resources, and the number of sections of the course was anticipated to grow. Two, conducting a workshop for each section revealed vast differences …

The Supreme Court says that campaign finance regulations are unconstitutional unless they target “quid pro quo” corruption or its appearance. To test those appearances, we fielded two studies. First, in a highly realistic simulation, three grand juries deliberated on charges that a campaign spender bribed a Congressperson. Second, 1271 representative online respondents considered whether to convict, with five variables manipulated randomly. In both studies, jurors found quid pro quo corruption for behaviors they believed to be common. This research suggests that Supreme Court decisions were wrongly decided, and that Congress and the states have greater authority to regulate campaign finance. …

Minor interviewed her for her position and she engaged with him on the train collection she saw in his office. She recalls giving him advice on books to purchase for his Classica collection. Myers loaned her a particular book and he expressed anxiety over its safety. She observes that he was not an astute collector of books in her area of expertise but recalls that he kept "want lists" of titles to look for and he would also look for items she was interested in. Sultan believes that Myers' "curiosity about learning" was infectious and important for students, staff and …
