New Study The South Essay By David Wharton, Admin

In a cultural climate based on the superficial, one has to wonder how much deeper the annual Elvis Death Day observances go than mere tradition and habit. Can such events be mined for anything worth knowing about the world we live in today? Was there more to be learned from Death Day ten years ago? Twenty years ago? Thirty? Those might be the most interesting questions of all to ask about what happens in Memphis on August 15.

Compensation And Community Corrosion: Perceived Inequalities, Social Comparisons, And Competition Following The Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill, Brian Mayer, Katrina Running, Kelly Bergstrand

Sociology & Anthropology Faculty Publications - Archive

After disasters, victim compensation programs are typically associated with individual healing and community rebuilding. But postdisaster compensation systems also have the potential to introduce confusion and competition, further fraying the social fabric of communities affected by trauma. To assess the perceived effects of disaster compensation processes on community social relations, as well as the mechanisms that underlie such effects, we turn to the case of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, after which BP implemented one of the largest compensation systems in U.S. history. Timely Doctoral Completion Rates In Five Fields: A Two-Part Study, Angela Miller

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Roughly half of all doctoral students who begin a program do not continue through graduation, and many of them face significant financial losses and emotional burdens as a result. Although this completion rate has stayed fairly constant for the past few decades, it has recently gained attention on a national level. In 2011, the National Research Council published the Assessment of Research Doctorate Programs in the United States, and provided a wealth of data on over 5,000 programs in 212 universities. This study used that dataset to examine the relationship between timely doctoral completion rates and 22 Program, Faculty and …

Milne Library

Recent developments in academic research and publishing have presented faculty with many challenges and opportunities. As Geneseo faculty sought help from Milne librarians on these issues, it became apparent that if we wanted to meet faculty needs we had to investigate how faculty were researching and publishing in the changing environment. To answer these questions, librarians from Milne interviewed eighty-seven Geneseo professors during the 2010-2011 and part of 2011-2012 academic years. The responses were compiled and analyzed after identifying information was removed. Librarians at Milne prepared reports focused on overarching themes that surfaced again and again in the interviews: Undergraduate …
