Holding Out One's Hand In The Dark: The Theme Of Touching In Selected Works Of Ursula K Leguin, Donna Dunbar-Odom

Until very recently, speculative fiction, or science fiction, has been virtually ignored by literary scholars. Science fiction was and still is, to some extent, considered popular fiction, and popular fiction has never received much critical attention. Unfortunately, this generalization excludes good works of popular fiction from study and criticism. Authors who have managed to crossover and received critical consideration are rare. One such “crossover” author is Ursula K. LeGuin but even LeGuin’s Work has been neglected outside of specialty journals such as Science Fiction Studies and Extrapolation. Little criticism of her fine novels and short stories appears in the most …

Legal Restrictions On Foreign Languages In The Great Plains States, 1917-1923, Frederick C. Luebke
Department of History: Faculty Publications
A major effect of World War I on American social history was that it focused attention on the nation's apparent difficulty in assimilating the millions of immigrants and their children who had streamed to the United States during the preceding two decades. The national mood, darkened by fears and resentments of long standing and deepened by systematic wartime propaganda, favored the adoption of stringent laws limiting the use of foreign languages, especially in the schools. During the war itself, restrictions were usually extralegal and often the consequences of intense social pressure recklessly applied. After the war, however, many state legislatures …

Sir Thomas More, Humanist And Hero: A Man For All Ages., Noel Joseph Toups
Sir Thomas More, Humanist And Hero: A Man For All Ages., Noel Joseph Toups
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Thomas More has appeared in diverse works from the sixteenth to twentieth century; these works have usually treated him as a model of integrity and conscience whose love of truth made him a touchstone for judging a panoply of others. More's own century viewed him in conflicting ways. Tudor apologists--Hall, Holinshed, and Foxe--were critical of More's wit and treatment of heretics and deemed him prideful, whereas the recusants like Roper and Harpsfield pictured More loyal Londoner, devoted father, humanist, and man of conscience. Sixteenth century treatments culminate in those of Ro. Ba. and Munday. Munday's Thomas More, an essentially Protestant …

Market Women's Cooperatives: Giving Women Credit, Judith Bruce
Market Women's Cooperatives: Giving Women Credit, Judith Bruce
Poverty, Gender, and Youth
In 1972, the Nicaraguan Foundation for Development (Fundación Nicaraguense de Desarrollo—FUNDE), one of two programs sponsored by the Nicaraguan Institute of Development, became aware of market women's need for credit. This issue of SEEDS describes FUNDE's experience in developing savings and loan cooperatives to meet this need. This summary stresses the human aspects of the process as much as the financial and technical ones. The project has been successful because the cooperatives have built upon the existing market women's culture, utilizing all the subtle and complex interpersonal relationships established over the years. In essence what the cooperatives have done is …

Hanover Street: An Experiment To Train Women In Welding And Carpentry, Peggy Antrobus, Barbara Rogers
Poverty, Gender, and Youth
The Hanover Street Project, formally known as the United Women’s Woodworking and Welding Project, is an experiment in training women for jobs usually held only by men. Begun in 1976, this was the first such program of the Jamaica Women's Bureau, established by the government during International Women's Year to ensure that women participate fully in Jamaica’s development. The project demonstrated that low-income women can learn non-traditional skills and can work together to improve their lives. Through trial and error, the project is providing the Women's Bureau with a wealth of information about teaching technical skills, working with other government …

Village Women Organize: The Mraru Bus Service, Jill Kneerim
Poverty, Gender, and Youth
The Mraru Women's Group in rural Kenya, like many community women's organizations around the world, is an example of a deeply rooted tradition of association and self-help among women. In 1971 the group began to gather its resources to solve a common problem—transportation. They raised money, bought a bus, and began a public transport service that made money; they now face other difficult questions such as reinvesting profits, serving members' broader needs, and maintaining a strong economic base. The Mraru Women's Group has shown unusual creativity and persistence in identifying common needs and organizing to meet them. They have also …

The Bridge
In the late Fall of 1890, Father went to the United States to get a job and to make a new home for us all. From Brooklyn the Reverend Anderson helped to send him on his way west, since he had been a farmer. At Chicago the Reverend Nielsen sent him to the Danish School and settlement at Elk Horn, Iowa, where he studied a little English and hired out on a farm, there to learn more English by practical experience.
A Drift Towards Nostalgia: The River Trip As Journal Of A Changing View Of American Wilderness, Richard D. Davis
A Drift Towards Nostalgia: The River Trip As Journal Of A Changing View Of American Wilderness, Richard D. Davis
Master's Theses
As early as the 1820s and 1830s, observers of the American scene, such as George Catlin, John James Audubon, and Alexis de Tocqueville, were expressing misgivings over the rapid settlement of the American West. In their concern over the passing of pristine landscapes and native cultures was a note of nostalgia for an earlier time, the era of exploration, whose journals echoed the freshness of discovery and spoke of the beauty and inexhaustible promise of the New World. The elegiac tone has become more explicit in our own time. In the works of twentieth century writers is seen a haunting …

From Eternal To Personal World Order: An Analysis Of Milton, Swift, And Twain, Marian O'Brien Paul
Student Work
The particular mental concept through which an author views the universe which surrounds him with which he must interact will, by extension, influence the way his literary characters relate themselves to the world in which he places them. It is of value to analyze the nature of that influence. If the author’s vision of reality is consistent with that of the immediately accepted world viewpoint, he will probably embrace that concept in his writings. Another Author who is aware of changes in the popular mode of viewing the universe may reflect these in what he writes, and the nuances of …

Deathsongs For Cynddylan: An Annotated Translation Of The Heledd Poems From The Red Book Of Hergest., Anne Mcconney
Student Work
In the Red Book of Hergest, one of the so-called "Four Ancient-Books of Wales," there are one hundred and seven short stanzas that tell the story of an early prince of Powys named Cynddylan, of his last battle and death, and of the grief of those who survived the burning of his fortress, Pengwern. It is a terse poem, telling in fine-honed imagery of a firelit world, brutal and bright and childlike, detailing the movements of pain and the ragged perimeters of survival in verse as lucid as water.

Contraceptives And Common Sense: Conventional Methods Reconsidered, Judith Bruce, S. Bruce Schearer
Contraceptives And Common Sense: Conventional Methods Reconsidered, Judith Bruce, S. Bruce Schearer
Reproductive Health
Since the 1960s, the solution to contraception problems has been based increasingly on complexity, not simplicity. The oral contraceptive was developed in the late 1950s using newly discovered synthetic hormones that act in intricate ways on glands in the brain. Intrauterine devices were widely introduced in the 1960s in a host of scientifically engineered configurations that act inside a woman’s uterus. Nearly half of all married couples in the United States who use some method of contraception use either the pill or IUD. In examining emerging social trends and considering the special needs of some large groups for better contraceptives—adolescents, …

The Relationship Between Stress, Anxiety, And Forms Of Content Learning, June C. Taylor
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
There is little doubt that anxiety is prevalent in today's world, and that students in school experience and are affected by anxiety. School is an evaluative experience and, as such, provides a wide variety of situations in which students are pressured to meet certain standards. Junior high school students, specifically, face an almost constant barrage of personal, social and academic situations new to them but with which they are expected to cope. Some students are able and willing to express their feelings of anxiety verbally to guidance counselors and others; some students exhibit these feelings physically in such activities as …
