"The Forgeries Of Jealousy": Shakespeare's Cuckoldry, Ronald Leo St. Pierre Jan 1982

"The Forgeries Of Jealousy": Shakespeare's Cuckoldry, Ronald Leo St. Pierre

Doctoral Dissertations

Cuckoldry is a complex of terms, ideas, injunctions and stereotypes attached to the notion that a wife's infidelity transformed her husband into a horned beast called a "cuckold." This complex, or lore of cuckoldry, was not merely a literary tradition but a popular conception which was beneficial to the medieval family structure with its wide kinship bonds and relatively cold husband-wife relationships. During Shakespeare's time, however, the family was changing, placing a greater stress on mutual society and paternal authority in such a way as to be incompatible with traditional cuckoldry. Consequently during the English Renaissance, literary treatments of cuckoldry …

The Markala Cooperative: A New Approach To Traditional Economic Roles, Susan Daughman, Mariam N'Diaye Thiam Jan 1982

The Markala Cooperative: A New Approach To Traditional Economic Roles, Susan Daughman, Mariam N'Diaye Thiam

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

This issue of SEEDS presents the Markala Cooperative, which resulted from the resolution of a group of poor women in rural Mali to seek paid employment. When the twenty original members joined together in 1975, their goals were to earn a regular salary and to learn marketable skills. By 1981, the women had established a successful cooperative business based on the production and sale of dyed cloth and laundry soap. The experience of the Markala women has already inspired other cooperative businesses in rural Mali, and it has also demonstrated that creating off-farm employment opportunities for women is a vital …

In 1969 Lloyd Alexander received the Newberry Award for The High King, fifth and last in the series of children's books he had undertaken concerning the land of Prydain and its final deliverance from evil magic. The Newberry Award brought to national and international claim an author whose work is of such quality, substance and character that it will remain firmly entrenched not only in the annals of children's literature, but in the hearts and minds of its readers as well. It is unfortunate that with a very few exceptions, like Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland and Kenneth Graham’s Wind …

Three Allegorical Novels Of Mari Sandoz: Slogum House, Capital City And The Tom-Walker, Barbara Wright Rippey Aug 1981

Three Allegorical Novels Of Mari Sandoz: Slogum House, Capital City And The Tom-Walker, Barbara Wright Rippey

Student Work

“The whole allegorical aspect of my fiction… has been almost entirely neglected,” Mari Sandoz complained to one of her editors. And in 1965, only a year before her death, she expressed the wish to another editor that her “three allegorical novels might be published together” and enclosed “a sort of discussion of the three books—and their interrelationships.” Sandoz apologized for this explanatory material, saying, “I was too sick when I wrote it.” This document she entitled, “Slogum House, Capital City, The Tom-Walker: The Three Allegorical Novels by Mari Sandoz (Rising out of her concern about the contemporary world)” (S to …

Hal Borland's "When The Legends Die" And N Scott Momaday's "House Made Of Dawn": Native American Alienation, Erin B. Murphy Rinaker Jul 1981

Hal Borland's "When The Legends Die" And N Scott Momaday's "House Made Of Dawn": Native American Alienation, Erin B. Murphy Rinaker

Student Work

The Native American is a character often stereotyped in literature. However, two authors, one a Native American himself, and the other, a European American or white man, depict the American Indian in a personal but objective manner. To understand these two separate works, House Made of Dawn by N. Scott Momaday, a Kiowa Indian, or When the Legends Die by Hal Borland, it is imperative to understand Native American culture and the problems which confront that culture. There is a basic conflict between the Native American and the Euro-American views of the universe and man's place in that universe. By …

The Female Archetypes In Swinburne's Early Work, 1857-1871., Betty Moss Duffy Jan 1981

The Female Archetypes In Swinburne's Early Work, 1857-1871., Betty Moss Duffy

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

From "Queen Yseult," 1857, to "Hertha" of Songs before Sunrise, 1871, three archetypes--the femme fatale, the Terrible Mother, and the androgyne--dominate Swinburne's poems, dramas, and novels. These archetypes project the dominant artistic conflict of the Victorian period, the controversy over the function of art and the role of the artist, for they symbolize the psychological and cultural conflict between the doctrine of art for art's sake and its antithesis, art for morality's sake. The femme fatale becomes a symbol of art and beauty, the goal of the artist-androgyne's aesthetic quest. Her masochistic lover strives to possess beauty in the form …

Developing Theological Patterns In John Milton's Poetry., Terri Rae Mckinney Jan 1981

Developing Theological Patterns In John Milton's Poetry., Terri Rae Mckinney

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

A study of John Milton's poetry reveals a pattern of developing theological concepts which in his later years result in unorthodox theological positions: ex Deo creation, mortalism, antitrinitarianism. This theology exists within the structure of free will and rests on the concept of God as Logos. Such theological conclusions as are voiced in Paradise Lost and Paradise Regained reflect Milton's vision of man's relationship to God, the nature of God and God's creation, the nature of Sin, and the means whereby man may be saved. Although unorthodox in the mainstream of seventeenth century English Protestantism on a number of doctrinal …

Women And Handicrafts: Myth And Reality, Jasleen Dhamija Jan 1981

Women And Handicrafts: Myth And Reality, Jasleen Dhamija

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

This issue of SEEDS reviews handicrafts as a means of providing income to women. In some instances, crafts are a solid source of income and can also provide women with a link to their own cultural heritage. In most instances, however, crafts production concentrates women in an area that is labor intensive and exploitative, providing a meager income for long hours of work. Handicrafts can be a means of increasing income for women in some settings, but only under the conditions outlined in this report, since crafts are specialized activities which have limited markets and offer limited potential as a …

Carriers Of The Dream Wheel Myth And Ceremony In N. Scott Momaday's" House Made Of Dawn" And Leslie Marmon "Silko's Ceremony"., Ronald D. Illingworth Nov 1980

Carriers Of The Dream Wheel Myth And Ceremony In N. Scott Momaday's" House Made Of Dawn" And Leslie Marmon "Silko's Ceremony"., Ronald D. Illingworth

Student Work

N. Scott Momadays novel, House Made Of Dawn, is built around the framework of the curative aspects of the Navajo ceremonial, the Night Chant. Understanding of the theme of the novel is broadened by reading it in terms of the Night Chant ritual: both concern a recurring symbolic removal of evil and a subsequent acquisition of grace. Similarly, character development, plot, and structure of the novel parallel aspects of the ceremonial. Abel's alienation episodes reflect those of the ceremonial Visionary; the stages composing Abel's search for identity are similar to the mythic episodes of the ceremonial Visionary; the stages composing …

Small Group Performance Compared To Large Group Performance In Remedial Writing At The Community College Level, Mitchell J. Bienia

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

It was the purpose of this study to evaluate the effectiveness of small group instruction in remedial writing as compared to large group instruction for the same course at Cuyahoga Community College.

Data was gathered in the following manner: Under normal college policy, students who register for remedial writing, English 091, were in either small groups of six students or large groups of approximately 28 students. Two of the large groups were randomly selected to serve as experimental groups which receive d traditional classroom instruction. Nine small groups were randomly selected to serve as control groups which were taught on …

The Splintered Fragment, Michael A. Witt Jul 1980

The Splintered Fragment, Michael A. Witt

Student Work

Nearly 20 years have now passed since critic Phillip Toynbee confidently but mistakenly assured readers of the London Observer that Lord of the Rings would soon be passing into “merciful oblivion.” The subsequent success these books have enjoyed has proven this prediction wholly unfounded. Far from fading into oblivion, The Lord of the Rings has found a very receptive audience among readers and critics of widely varying literary tastes, and while it is obviously too soon to suggest that the popularity it has enjoyed and the genius it displays will assure Tolkien a place among other great English writers like …
