The Development Of English As A Second Language In Aboriginal And Migrant Children : A Pilot Study, A. L. Mcgregor Jan 1978

The Development Of English As A Second Language In Aboriginal And Migrant Children : A Pilot Study, A. L. Mcgregor

Research outputs pre 2011

Research programs developed in Queensland under the Van Leer Foundation Project and the Mount Gravatt Teachers College Language Research Project have yielded practicable approaches for the gathering and analysis of speech data from children of various age groups. On the basis of this research it has been possible to study patterns of language development in first language and to develop appropriate literacy materials for children at various levels of primary education. To date comparatively little is known about patterns of second language development. The question as to whether structures develop in the same sequence and at the same rates as …

Individualism And Conformity : Their Development And Influence On The American Character, Anne Secker Jan 1977

Individualism And Conformity : Their Development And Influence On The American Character, Anne Secker

Honors Capstones

In this increasingly self-conscious society almost everyone craves self-definition. One of the chief justifications for the study of purely American literature or American history assumes that Americans are fundamentally different from other peoples. Such an assumption is generally accepted as valid and never questioned very seriously. Consequently, there has been, since the first settlements began in the “New World” over 400 years ago, an attempt to characterize exactly what makes this American, this new person in relationship to the world, different from his European counterparts. The quest for the definition of an American character has involved many questions—What are Americans’ …

Features Of Serbo-Croatian For Language Teachers, Eric G. Vaszolyi Jan 1977

Features Of Serbo-Croatian For Language Teachers, Eric G. Vaszolyi

Research outputs pre 2011

Teachers of migrant children experience a great many difficulties in trying to understand and resolve their pupils' language problems. One basic problem is all too familiar: the teacher speaks English and the migrant child does not understand it or only understands it to some, rather limited, extent. Another problem area: the pupil picks up some English in the classroom, on the playground and out in the street but speaks it with a peculiar accent and peppers it with phonemic, grammatical and semantic errors. The child's deviations from the generally accepted patterns of English (i.e. the prevalent variety of English spoken …

Alternatives To Meaninglessness In Ken Kesey's "Sometimes A Great Notion", Dennis L. Beckmann Aug 1976

Alternatives To Meaninglessness In Ken Kesey's "Sometimes A Great Notion", Dennis L. Beckmann

Student Work

At first glance, Ken Kesey appears to be a contemporary prophet of doom. His characters find little meaning in life, as each day brings only hopelessness and despair. For each of these characters, there are many causes of and responses to the problem of meaninglessness. The common denominator which links all of Kesey’s characters, and perhaps all men, is that they cannot progress towards any kind of satisfactory existence until some meaning for life is found.

Flannery O'Connor's Mystical Salvation Through External And Internal Conflicts., Donna Lou Walker Apr 1976

Flannery O'Connor's Mystical Salvation Through External And Internal Conflicts., Donna Lou Walker

Student Work

Flannery O'Connor died in 1963 when she was thirty-nine. Her life and her career were short. Her canon consists of thirty-one short stories, two novels, and a scattered number of essays which were collected after her death and published under the title Mystery and Manners. Although, her short stories were first published in 1946, it was not until the early 1950's that the first distinctive O'Connor story appeared, "A Good Man Is Hard to Find." An O'Connor story typically deals with man, the evil within, the misplaced emphasis on external "goodness," and man's final integration with God which comes when …

Adrienne Rich: A Woman's Perspective, Marjorie Waterman Apr 1976

Adrienne Rich: A Woman's Perspective, Marjorie Waterman

Student Work

In both style and theme, Adrienne Rich represents a provocative figure in contemporary poetry. Her ability to transcend mere transcription of her own experience sets are apart from most poets writing today. Penetrating insight, the ability to draw precise analogies and a creative sense of the language take her writing beyond polemics. In the tradition of Walt Whitman, Rich regards words as parts of reality, as well as symbols for it. Consequently, her language is like life, dynamic, vigorous, combining heterogenous elements. She is comfortable mixing classical references with contemporary. Her poetry incorporates scientific jargon, foreign phrases, and American slang. …

English-Vietnamese Translation: An Internship, Blaine L. Hart Jan 1976

English-Vietnamese Translation: An Internship, Blaine L. Hart

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

The art of translation lies in a literary limbo, subservient to the creativity and expressions of others. Yet in attempting to bridge two different languages and cultures, it entails unique problems as difficult as those encountered in any other literary activity.

The following is the report of a project carried out with the Translation Department of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in the fall of 1975 as a senior Honors project in fulfillment of requirements for graduation from the Honors Program at U.S.U. Since this internship itself formed the bulk of my project, the following is presented …

Human Love And Divine Love: The Platonic Matrix In C.S. Lewis, Laura Case Jul 1975

Human Love And Divine Love: The Platonic Matrix In C.S. Lewis, Laura Case

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

A comparison of the writings of Plato and C.S. Lewis reveals a common idea that human love is not sufficient for man. An examination of Plato’s Symposium and Lewis’s Till We Have Faces and The Four Loves, in particular, shows that both writers illustrate that man must ascend the ladder of love in order to meet the source of all love: Divine Love. Concerned with man’s innate needs and ethics, both Plato and Lewis argue that there is a universal principle of goodness known to all men of all cultures. Lewis argues, especially in The Abolition of Man, that man …

Shirley Jackson' S Portrayal Of Female Characters Iri Conflict, Judith Moran Dirks Jul 1975

Shirley Jackson' S Portrayal Of Female Characters Iri Conflict, Judith Moran Dirks

Student Work

Shirley Jackson is best known as the author of such horror pieces as The Haunting of Hill House and her most famous story, "The Lottery." Although the frightening aspect of her work is unique and effective, readers and critics often respond to this alone. It seems that a more significant effect of her work lies in her portrayal of characters who must react to a wide variety of strange situations. Jackson combines her characters with unusual settings and incidents in a carefully balanced presentation that helps her portray human nature deeply. This paper will focus on a study of Jackson's …

Willa Cather's Refinement Of Art Through Progress And Change: A Study Of "The Song Of The Lark" And "My Mortal Enemy", Kevin A. Synnott Jun 1975

Willa Cather's Refinement Of Art Through Progress And Change: A Study Of "The Song Of The Lark" And "My Mortal Enemy", Kevin A. Synnott

Student Work

The reputation of Willa Cather is based, for the most part, on her novels of the frontier, particularly My Antonia (1918) and Death Comes for the Archbishop (1927). Her childhood years in Nebraska exposed her to the pioneer experience in America, and the way of life she knew in a small, prairie town late in the nineteenth century was to become a major influence in her writing. Taking the advice of Sarah Orne Jewett, Miss Cather found her “quiet centre of life,” and wrote about that which she knew best--the life she lived, the people who made that life interesting, …
