Keats And The "Service Of The Time Being", Joanne Lorna Buckley Jan 1983

Keats And The "Service Of The Time Being", Joanne Lorna Buckley

Digitized Theses

This dissertation is an exploration of Keats's poems and letters with an eye to discovering his attitude toward the viability of poetry in a post-Lockean universe. Keats's concern with the subjective limitations of imagination in the face of scientific advancement in his time and its effects on his poetry are thus its subject.;The Echo and Narcissus myth, as it relates to the reflexive imagery in Keats's work, is used as a paradigm of the Lockean split between reflection and sensation and its relation to the poetic process. Certain motifs related to Keats's reflexive imagery are then examined, including the motifs …

The Influence Of Eighteenth-Century British Landscape Aesthetics On Narrative And Pictorial Responses To The British North American North And West 1769-1872, I S. Maclaren Jan 1983

The Influence Of Eighteenth-Century British Landscape Aesthetics On Narrative And Pictorial Responses To The British North American North And West 1769-1872, I S. Maclaren

Digitized Theses

This study undertakes a consideration of a century of travel writing by Britons who explored, surveyed, traded, hunted, prospected, botanized, and established missions in the British North American North and West between 1769 and 1872. Its particular concern is how Britons employed the principles and conventions of eighteenth-century British landscape aesthetics to describe and depict northern and western terrain.;An aesthetic mode of perceiving nature, as has been argued by perceptual geographers, art historians, and literary critics, constitutes one way that a society forms it understanding of reality. For the eighteenth- and early-nineteenth-century Briton, the Sublime and the Picturesque were the …

The Disimprisoned Epic: A Generic Study Of "The French Revolution", Mark Douglas Cumming Jan 1983

The Disimprisoned Epic: A Generic Study Of "The French Revolution", Mark Douglas Cumming

Digitized Theses

"The Disimprisoned Epic" attempts to offer the most comprehensive generic study to date of The French Revolution. It begins by considering the artistic experimentation and generic speculation prevalent in early nineteenth-century European literature and criticism, and their reflection in Carlyle's early critical essays. It then proceeds to examine how the genres discussed by Carlyle in his criticism reappear in paradoxical contexts in his own literary experiments, treating particularly the generic designations that Carlyle offers--though never simply or unproblematically--for his "novel" Sartor Resartus, his satire (or "pasquil") "Count Cagliostro," his "romance" "The Diamond Necklace," and his "epic" The French Revolution. After …

Us And Them: Technological Hierarchies In Fowles And Pynchon, Frederick John Daw Jan 1983

Us And Them: Technological Hierarchies In Fowles And Pynchon, Frederick John Daw

Digitized Theses

John Fowles and Thomas Pynchon, like many contemporary writers, have noted that modern Western societies are dominated by arbitrarily created hierarchies. The major purpose of their fiction is to expose arbitrariness by increasing our desire to be self-conscious about our creation of social reality. The novels reveal the dualism and solipsism which are the results of the creation of hierarchies, and the authors argue for a type of ambivalence which can mediate the poles of unsuitable dualisms and move us to an "interface," or privileged position, which is not dominated by either pole of a duality.;Fowles' and Pynchon's works reveal …

Mimetic Process In The Sermons Of John Donne, Paul Wesley Harland Jan 1983

Mimetic Process In The Sermons Of John Donne, Paul Wesley Harland

Digitized Theses

This dissertation argues that Donne's homiletic method manifests a fictive and processive structure which imitates God's historically revelatory working with his people. Integral to this mimetic structure are several dramatic techniques which forward the action.;Donne's "theory" of mimesis may be constructed by analyzing his comments concerning the imitation of historical precedents. Such comments reveal Donne's trust in the ability of experience to purify the soul and his belief that growth may be incuded by doubt, affliction, and virtuous choice, actions which imitate the actions of the faithful witnesses who make up Christ's body. Donne asserts that the beauty which best …

An Edition, With An Introduction, Notes, And A Parallel Latin Text, Of Sir Robert Howard's Translation Of Statius's "Achilleis", Roger Wesley Hatch Jan 1983

An Edition, With An Introduction, Notes, And A Parallel Latin Text, Of Sir Robert Howard's Translation Of Statius's "Achilleis", Roger Wesley Hatch

Doctoral Dissertations

This edition offers a critical old-spelling text of Sir Robert Howard's translation of Statius's Achilleis (1660). Sir Robert's annotations on his translation are given in the form of photographic copies, and the Latin text which Sir Robert seems to have principally used, that of 1658, is given in the form of an unedited typed transcript, and is presented next to the text of the translation in a closely parallel manner. The first section of the introduction offers reasons why Sir Robert's Achilleis is significant and includes a brief discussion of extant Roman epics and of Renaissance and eighteenth-century translations of …

Humor And Satire In The Canterbury Tales, Susan E. Beeman Jul 1982

Humor And Satire In The Canterbury Tales, Susan E. Beeman

Student Work

Geoffrey Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales are humorous and satiric, but the humor and satire are usually addressed in very general terms by critical scholars. The critical literature regarding humor and satire in general and The Canterbury Tales in particular says little about how the humor and satire work, possibly because both their nature and the operation of their techniques in a work are so difficult to pinpoint and explain. Nevertheless, such an undertaking is possible and worthwhile.

Promethean Principles Of Community In Three Novels By Wright Morris, Diane Wood Apr 1982

Promethean Principles Of Community In Three Novels By Wright Morris, Diane Wood

Student Work

Long overdue, appreciation for Wright Morris’s literary merit may be coming of age in America. Although many people persist in recognizing him chiefly as a photographer or as a religionist, his novel, Plains Song, received widely published attention and recently won Morris his second National Book Award. His latest book, and memoir entitled Will’s Boy, prompted the lead review in the book section of a recent Newsweek, thus exposing his rich talent to a wide, popular audience. Admittedly, Wright Morris is also an accomplished, noted photographer, and he does write frequently about Nebraska. Morris’s Fiction, however, preceded and inspired his …

T S Eliot's Shakespeare Criticism, Discovery And Advance, Sudhakar Marathe Jan 1982

T S Eliot's Shakespeare Criticism, Discovery And Advance, Sudhakar Marathe

Digitized Theses

There is a crucial gap in Eliot studies: although he contributed considerably to Shakespearean criticism, Eliot's ideas on the place of Shakespeare in the tradition of English literature and his uniqueness, have been neglected. Among other reasons, the scattered nature of much of Eliot's commentary on Shakespeare is responsible for this gap. Eliot wrote about Shakespeare throughout his career, in various contexts, usefully and illuminatingly. This study presents, in the first chapter, those parts of Eliot's literary criticism which concern Shakespeare. Special substantial appendices provide valuable information in this respect which has been brought together for the first time, and …

Tracing The Thread: The Image Of The Labyrinth In Selected Novels By Wilkie Collins, Charles Dickens And Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu, David Philip Gates Jan 1982

Tracing The Thread: The Image Of The Labyrinth In Selected Novels By Wilkie Collins, Charles Dickens And Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu, David Philip Gates

Digitized Theses

This thesis will explore the image of the labyrinth and its use as a metaphor for the theme of ritual initiation in selected novels by Wilkie Collins, Charles Dickens, and Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu. In terms of its mythic interpretation, an aspect which as yet has not been examined at length by critics of Victorian fiction, the labyrinth or maze has significance beyond its Gothic and urban associations. Chapter One looks at the use of the image in the settings of several novels, the London of Oliver Twist, The Old Curiosity Shop, Barnaby Rudge, and Bleak House, and the labyrinthine …

A New Edition Of The Worchester "Soul's Address To The Body", Douglas Alexander Moffat Jan 1982

A New Edition Of The Worchester "Soul's Address To The Body", Douglas Alexander Moffat

Digitized Theses

The thesis is a new edition of the "Soul's Address to the Body," a poem from the period of transition between Old and Middle English that exists uniquely in Worcester Cathedral MS. F. 174. The MS. dates from either the late twelfth or early thirteenth century; the "Soul's Address" itself is generally dated to the early part of the twelfth century. The MS. presents many problems for the editor. It was disassembled, probably late in the medieval period, and its leaves were trimmed and used as stiffening in another bookbinding. It was not reassembled until the early nineteenth century.;The introductory …
