Virginia Woolf's Use Of The Past: The Early Criticism To "To The Lighthouse" (History, Modernism, World War I), Marilee Line Fulton
Doctoral Dissertations
In her early twenties, Virginia Woolf considered becoming a historian, and for several years after she began The Voyage Out, her criticism centered on historical and biographical subjects. Later she, alone among British novelists, combined history and modernist technique, most obviously in her last five novels. Orlando and Flush are mock biographies; The Waves appears against vast cycles of history and prehistory; The Years is a modernist rendering of the three generation novel; Between the Acts concerns a pageant of English history performed while planes preparing for war fly overhead. But the historical fiction that began with Orlando did not …

Some things are like riding a bicycle; once you acquire the talent you rarely need to practice it. Other things, like teaching, are more difficult skills to master. They require a considerable amount of practice and fine-tuning and can always use some improvement and updating. It is for this reason that, after student teaching at East Aurora High School in the fall, I decided to teach in an English 104 class and tutor in the Communication Skills Writing Lab spring semester. For, while student teaching was an invaluable learning opportunity, ten short weeks just didn’t give me as much classroom …
Georgia's Literary Heritage: An Illustrated Literary Map Of Georgia, Betty Ostrander
Georgia's Literary Heritage: An Illustrated Literary Map Of Georgia, Betty Ostrander
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this project was to design and produce a literary map of Georgia that would be of instructional use to English teachers in secondary schools. The illustrated map depicts the setting of major works which are placed in Georgia. Locations within the state relevant to the lives of various Georgia authors are also shown. Accompanying the map are biographical sketches of the authors. The map and the biographical information should provide teachers with support material for a study of Georgia's literature.
The Effects Of Computer-Assisted Cloze Procedure On The Acquisition Of English As A Second Language, Bette Lynn Eichel
The Effects Of Computer-Assisted Cloze Procedure On The Acquisition Of English As A Second Language, Bette Lynn Eichel
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
The purposes of this study were (1) to determine the effect of computer-assisted cloze exercises on the acquisition of English as a second language of selected community college students, and (2) to determine if computer-assisted cloze exercises were more effective for Spanish as opposed to Chinese native language students. It was hypothesized that (1) students using the CAI exercises would receive higher posttest scores than students not using the exercises, and that (2) within the experimental group, Spanish native language students would receive higher scores on a posttest of grammar proficiency than Chinese native language students. The sample for the …

The Theory Of Transcendence A Movement In The Chain Of Being Toward The Good, Joanne L. Kolenda
The Theory Of Transcendence A Movement In The Chain Of Being Toward The Good, Joanne L. Kolenda
Student Work
The theory of transcendence is an examination of the nature of man, dual material/spiritual creature, and of his cosmic position on the Great Chain of Being, from which position he may move in the perfectibility of order toward an achievement of the good. Occupying a mid-point in the hierarchical spiral toward Omega, man may aspire to perfect himself according to his nature in the intrinsic orders of both virtue and rationality.

Tree Diameter Measurements At English And Metric Standard Heights: A Comparison, United States Department Of Agriculture, Forest Service
Tree Diameter Measurements At English And Metric Standard Heights: A Comparison, United States Department Of Agriculture, Forest Service
Forestry
The impact of measuring trees at 1.3 m versus 1.37 m heights above ground line was analyzed. The results indicate that the difference in diameter measurement taken at the two points averages around 1 percent. An equation for converting from English diameter at breast height to the metric equivalent of 1.3 m is presented.
A Study Of Robert Browning's "Sordello", Stefanie Anne Ketley
A Study Of Robert Browning's "Sordello", Stefanie Anne Ketley
Digitized Theses
Readers of Sordello have insufficiently appraised Browning's use of a late-medieval, early-Renaissance setting to express his nineteenth-century themes. They tend either to dismiss the poem's historical details in favour of its nineteenth-century implications, or to exaggerate Browning's interest in the Italian Renaissance at the expense of his nineteenth-century concerns. The thesis argues that although Browning is reasonably accurate about historical details, a greater concern is to illustrate the continuities between historical periods determined by universal human inclinations and experiences, and by the continuities of God's providential ways.;Other Victorians' historical writings tended either to idealize or repudiate the Middle Ages or …
A Critical Edition Of Benjamin Hoadley's "The Suspicious Husband" (1747), Harriet Winnifred Boyes-Maconaghie
A Critical Edition Of Benjamin Hoadley's "The Suspicious Husband" (1747), Harriet Winnifred Boyes-Maconaghie
Digitized Theses
Benjamin Hoadly, M.D. (1706-1757), was the son of Benjamin Hoadly, Bishop of Winchester. His interest in theatre was chiefly manifested in his play The Suspicious Husband, first acted at Covent Garden on 12 Feb., 1747, for which David Garrick wrote a Prologue and acted the part of Ranger. The Suspicious Husband was an extremely popular play throughout the eighteenth and ninetheenth centuries. There is, however, no separate modern edition of this play, the last edition having been published in English Plays, 1660-1820, New York, 1935. The play has some importance in the light of the nature of its satiric comedy …
The Vanquished Christ Of Modern Passion Drama., Lynda Margaret Scott Donaldson
The Vanquished Christ Of Modern Passion Drama., Lynda Margaret Scott Donaldson
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The study of "The Vanquished Christ in Modern Passion Drama" selects from the anthropocentric passion imagery in over fifty modern plays written in English between 1864 and 1980. By focusing on the modern passion dramas which appeared during the 1920s and in the postmodern period coinciding with the conflict in Vietnam of 1957 through 1973, the main thrust of this research reveals the modern poetic vision of the Christ figure of passion persona who, like mankind at war, is threatened with extinction. The modern, radical poetic vision differs from the traditional view of the passion demonstrated in pageants such as …
The Role Of Religions And Cults In The Plays Of Thomas Middleton., Deborah Rees Griffitts
The Role Of Religions And Cults In The Plays Of Thomas Middleton., Deborah Rees Griffitts
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Most of Thomas Middleton's works, as well as his personal background, indicate that his theological inclinations were Calvinistic. Many of his plays display his regard for "protestant" morality or his contempt for Roman Catholics and fringe elements of the Reform movement. His early and middle plays also satirize Puritans, who, although basically loyal subjects, were offensive to both Elizabeth I and James I because they urged greater reforms within the orthodox Church and criticized practices of which both monarchs were fond. During the reign of James, Puritans, largely from the middle class, became particularly unpopular among the gentry and courtier …
Developing Non-Craft Employment For Women In Bangladesh, Marty Chen
Developing Non-Craft Employment For Women In Bangladesh, Marty Chen
Poverty, Gender, and Youth
Too often when development planners or practitioners plan income-generating schemes for women they consider only handicrafts. While in some situations craft production may provide a secure source of income for women, in many cases it results in poor returns and proves more complicated an undertaking than expected. The Bangladesh Rural Advancement Committee (BRAC) is one agency that has developed a successful program of non-craft employment opportunities for women. Some 10,000 poor women have been engaged by BRAC in viable economic schemes: 9,000 in non-craft production. This issue of SEEDS reviews BRAC's experience in developing non-craft employment opportunities and participatory associations …
Junior High School Teachers' Attitudes Toward Using The Microcomputer As An Instructional Aid, Gordon L. Cooksey
Junior High School Teachers' Attitudes Toward Using The Microcomputer As An Instructional Aid, Gordon L. Cooksey
Theses and Dissertations
This study was a descriptive survey of a junior high school's teachers' attitudes toward using the microcomputer as an instructional aid. The subjects were 25 academic teachers at a Muscogee County, Georgia, junior high school. Most of the teachers had been part of a pilot program to introduce a microcomputer laboratory at the junior high level. The data gathering instrument for this study was a 20-item questionnaire devised by the researcher. The questionnaire was pretested and administered in the spring of 1984. The results revealed highly favorable attitudes among teachers in the four academic disciplines toward using the microcomputer as …
Community Management Of Waste Recycling: The Sirdo, Marianne Schmink
Community Management Of Waste Recycling: The Sirdo, Marianne Schmink
Poverty, Gender, and Youth
At the beginning of 1978, a group of families were awaiting access to low-cost housing in Mérida, a city on Mexico's southeastern coast. Some units were equipped with a new drainage system called SIRDO (Integrated System for Recycling Organic Wastes), and families interested in living in the experimental block where the SIRDO was to be installed could be given housing right away. Three years later, families in another community located in the crowded Valley of Mexico decided to try the system in their own neighborhood. Women have played a crucial role in learning to manage the technical, economic, and social …

Faulkner's Satyrikon And Tragic Vision: "Absalom, Absalom!" And "The Sound And The Fury", Patrick H. Brennan
Student Work
Faulkner’s The Sound and the Fury and Absalom, Absalom!, having escaped the pejorative category of “regional literature” by virtue of their technical excellence, occupy estimable positions in the main body of twentieth-century American literature. Part of the widespread interest they arouse is owing to the hold that the Old South has over the American public at large. As the precipitator of the American Civil War and as the repository of the aristocratic way of life that in its way mirrored the feudal societies of Europe, the Old South has given rise to a body of legend that is steeped in …
