The Poetic Unity Of Edmund Spenser's "Complaints", Linda Mary Vecchi Jan 1986

The Poetic Unity Of Edmund Spenser's "Complaints", Linda Mary Vecchi

Digitized Theses

This study offers a revaluation of the Complaints volume. It proposes that Spenser's poems of 1591 are unified both generically and thematically. Chapter One reviews the arguments for accepting the Complaints as an authorized collection of Spenser's works and establishes that all the poems in the volume are complaints. Chapter Two surveys the critical background of the Complaints poems, bringing together material published from 1591 to the present date and providing an assessment of the various estimates of the poems. Chapters Three and Four consider the development of the complaint genre. Chapter Three looks specifically at the classical and Biblical …

A Critical Study Of The Novels Of John Fowles, Katherine M. Tarbox Jan 1986

A Critical Study Of The Novels Of John Fowles, Katherine M. Tarbox

Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation offers a prismatic view of John Fowles's novels. My approach accords with his major theme: that true perception is "seeing whole." My readings involve, first, a close textual analysis which demonstrates how Fowles uses patterning, counterpoint, symbol and image clusters to suggest the nature of reality. I also examine extensively Fowles's use of rhetoric. The study of his artistry inevitably leads to a discussion of his themes. I have considered Fowles's theory of history, his feeling that individual self-awareness is the key to the evolution of the species, and that one's personal freedom should be unassailable.

My work …

Socioeconomic Indicators Of Women's Status In Developing Countries, 1970–1980, Constantina Safilios-Rothschild Jan 1986

Socioeconomic Indicators Of Women's Status In Developing Countries, 1970–1980, Constantina Safilios-Rothschild

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

From 1970–1980, several conferences were held and publications produced regarding the need to improve data collection on indicators of women’s status, as well as a number of publications offering concrete proposals for such improvements. During this period, the disaggregation of statistics by sex has expanded in many countries and indicators, and such disaggregated statistics are presented with increased frequency in international data compiled by United Nations specialized organizations. In addition, two major sets of statistics on the status of women have appeared. These statistics on socioeconomic indicators of the status of women in developing countries include statistics on men as …

Suicide In Henry James's Fiction., Mary John Joseph Jan 1986

Suicide In Henry James's Fiction., Mary John Joseph

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

A writer who emphasizes the workings of the minds of his characters by working "an acre of embroidery on an inch of canvas," James calls attention to the portrayal of self-willed deaths in his fiction. Writing in the period following the glorification of the suicidal deaths of Werther and Chatterton, James creates several suicidal characters. Having grown up in a highly individualistic family that emphasized the exercise of free will, and being one who revels in the probing of his characters' consciousnesses, James considered important the role of will in matters of life and death. The ruinous effects of displacement …

The Women's Construction Collective: Building For The Future, Ruth Mcleod Jan 1986

The Women's Construction Collective: Building For The Future, Ruth Mcleod

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

This edition of SEEDS focuses on a project developed to integrate low-income women into Jamaica's construction industry. In two years, 34 women passed through the project's basic training and skills upgrading courses. More than 90 percent of these women became employed, the majority as masons and carpenters. The story of how this field was identified as a potential source of income for women, and how the project developed and evolved in response to changing circumstances, presents many useful lessons. These should be of particular interest to those seeking to identify employment areas where women's participation is feasible and in helping …

Learning About Women And Urban Services In Latin America And The Caribbean, Marianne Schmink, Judith Bruce, Marilyn Kohn Jan 1986

Learning About Women And Urban Services In Latin America And The Caribbean, Marianne Schmink, Judith Bruce, Marilyn Kohn

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

In 1978 when the Population Council formulated a program to learn more about low-income urban women’s access to services, the dearth of information was striking, particularly in contrast to the emerging body of information delineating access to credit, extension, membership in rural institutions, and representation in local governments. Access to services was much less well-defined owing to the diverse cultures that meet in the urban environment, the mobility of city life, and the fluidity of households. Urban development planners, researchers, and those involved in community action projects in a number of South American cities were approached to find out what …

Visionary Excitability And George Eliot: Judeo-Mythic Narrative Technique In Daniel Deronda, Barbara Stufflebeem Jan 1986

Visionary Excitability And George Eliot: Judeo-Mythic Narrative Technique In Daniel Deronda, Barbara Stufflebeem

Honors Papers

Readers of Daniel Deronda have long noted the tension in the novel between the so-called "Jewish" and "English" halves, and understandably so. Not only are the lives of Gwendolen's carefully drawn psychological portrait contrasts strongly with the air of myth and prophecy in Deronda's discovery of his heritage and destiny. Critics, following Leavis in The Great Tradition, have considered Deronda's story vastly inferior to Gwendolen's, an unbelievable moral fairy-tale peopled with flat characters. But if we consider the novel, ans the Deronda story especially, as constructed with an awareness of a characteristically Judaic narrative style we can see both as …

Achieving Writers' Audience Awareness By Basing A Systematic Arrangement Of Modern, Practical Approaches On Aristotle's "Rhetoric", Michael Dean Baker Jul 1985

Achieving Writers' Audience Awareness By Basing A Systematic Arrangement Of Modern, Practical Approaches On Aristotle's "Rhetoric", Michael Dean Baker

Student Work

Writers with a clear conception of their intended readers and an accurate idea of reader reaction produce better writing than writers without such audience awareness. When writers fail they fail mostly because they lack audience awareness.

Tzutujil Grammar, Jon P. Dayley

Faculty & Staff Authored Books

This work is a reference grammar of the Tzutujjl language spoken in the departments of Solola and Suchitepequez in Guatemala. Tzutujil is one of approximately thirty Mayan languages that are spoken by several million people in Mexico, Guatemala, Belize, and Honduras. And Each Hue Had A Differing Cry: Joyce's Use Of Colours In "Finnegans Wake", J Colm O'Sullivan Jan 1985

And Each Hue Had A Differing Cry: Joyce's Use Of Colours In "Finnegans Wake", J Colm O'Sullivan

Digitized Theses

This study investigates the colour-patterns to be found in Finnegans Wake. It argues that Joyce deliberately employed patterns of colour-association in structuring and elaborating the themes of his last great work and that the tracing of those patterns helps to clarify the themes and the manner of their articulation.;Chapter One examines the colours in Dubliners, A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man and Ulysses. Increasingly through the three works the juxtaposition and opposition of colours attend the struggles of the protagonists and indicate the range of perceptions through which those struggles may be viewed. Colour-patterns in Ulysses are …

Poetry In Process: Elizabeth Barrett Browning And The Sonnets Notebook., Phillip David Sharp Jan 1985

Poetry In Process: Elizabeth Barrett Browning And The Sonnets Notebook., Phillip David Sharp

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

To date, the examination of Elizabeth Barrett Brownings' composition and publication history has been hampered by the inaccessibility of the manuscripts and corrected proofs that were sold at public auction following the death of the Brownings' son in 1913. This examination of the "Sonnets" manuscript notebook at the Armstrong Browning Library at Baylor University, then, sheds new light on Elizabeth Barrett Browning's literary interests and activities in the early 1840's as well as on her methods of composition and revision. Each of the twenty-three poems and fragments in the "Sonnets" notebook was written between 1842-1844, years which mark a turning …

A Critical Old-Spelling Edition Of Aphra Behn's "The City Heiress", William Robert Hersey Jan 1985

A Critical Old-Spelling Edition Of Aphra Behn's "The City Heiress", William Robert Hersey

Doctoral Dissertations

This edition offers a critical old-spelling text of Aphra Behn's The City Heiress. The first section of the critical introduction examines the problems created by Behn's early biographers and attempts to establish the reasons for her being such a mysterious figure in English literature. The introduction also provides a background of the Restoration theater, defines the nature of the Restoration audience for which Behn wrote, and shows how her comedy is both similar to and significantly different from that of her contemporaries. A discussion of a number of Behn's plays demonstrates that just as Behn becomes more assertive in responding …

The South Seas Fiction Of Robert Louis Stevenson, Robert Irwin Hillier Jan 1985

The South Seas Fiction Of Robert Louis Stevenson, Robert Irwin Hillier

Doctoral Dissertations

As the title suggests, this dissertation investigates Stevenson's works which are set in the South Pacific, works emerging from his study, experience, and observation during his travels through and residence in island of the South Pacific. The works discussed include a travel book, In the South Seas; two narrative poems which approximate Polynesian folklore, "The Feast of Famine" and "The Song of Rahero;" two short stories in a fairy tale mode, "The Isle of Voices" and "The Bottle Imp;" two full-length novels written in collaboration with Lloyd Osbourne, The Wrecker and The Ebb Tide; and one novella, The Beach of …
