A Demographic Survey Of English As A Second Language Students At The Borough Of Manhattan Community College., Linda R. Markstein
A Demographic Survey Of English As A Second Language Students At The Borough Of Manhattan Community College., Linda R. Markstein
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
A demographic survey was conducted of English as a Second Language (ESL) students registered in the ESL program at the Borough of Manhattan Community College in fall 1986. The results of the survey were compared with a similar demographic survey conducted in the ESL program in fall 1982. The survey covered country of origin, native language, gender, years in the United States, age, and working status of the students' registration in the ESL program.
All of the ESL instructors surveyed the ESL students in their sections using a group oral survey instrument. One thousand seventy students were surveyed, eighty-nine percent …

Your Father's Crimes: The Family Cycle Of Dysfunction In The Works Of Wd Snodgrass, Eve R. Hermanson
Your Father's Crimes: The Family Cycle Of Dysfunction In The Works Of Wd Snodgrass, Eve R. Hermanson
Student Work
Never before has society so imminently faced the breakup of its basic cell—the traditional family—or in great numbers than in the last half of the twentieth century. Like other art forms, poetry reflects the changing concerns of society, and when Heart’s Needle appeared in 1959, critics praised W. D. Snodgrass for the honest and unsentimental sequence of poems about his difficulty as a newly divorced father. Without a doubt, the effect of divorce on parent/child relationships becomes an increasingly significant theme to growing numbers of people as divorce becomes increasingly accepted and widespread in our culture; however, the loss of …

Auguries Of Difference: Indeterminacy And Displacement In Blake's Prophetic Texts, David Leonard Clark
Auguries Of Difference: Indeterminacy And Displacement In Blake's Prophetic Texts, David Leonard Clark
Digitized Theses
Critical studies of William Blake have emphasized the integrity of his major prophecies and their commitment to a "grammar of the imagination" which reconciles differences in favour of the identity of the "human form divine." This thesis throws these emphases into question in two ways. First, a close examination of Blake's accounts of life in "Eden" suggests that he could view perfection as a conflictual condition which ceaselessly undoes itself, creatively deferring rather than seeking the stability of final form. This unconventional modelling of the shape of reality emerges as a logical consequence of Blake's revisionary conception of cosmic history, …
The Bardic Style In The Poetry Of Gerard Manley Hopkins, William Butler Yeats, And Dylan Thomas, Sheila Mccolm Deane
The Bardic Style In The Poetry Of Gerard Manley Hopkins, William Butler Yeats, And Dylan Thomas, Sheila Mccolm Deane
Digitized Theses
There have always been elements in the poetry of Gerard Manley Hopkins, William Butler Yeats, and Dylan Thomas that have been difficult to account for. Although each of these writers is generally engaged with modern poetics and sensitive to the issues of his time, certain characteristics of the work--such as Hopkins' unusual diction, Yeats's concern for traditional metres, or Thomas's elaborate rhyme schemes--seem out of keeping with a position in the mainstream of modernism. This dissertation attempts to shed some light on these puzzling characteristics by revealing them to be features of a bardic style, the consequence of these writers' …

The 'Entente' Of The Narrator: A Poet Speaks To His Audience In Chaucer's Versions Of The Dido And Aeneas Legend, Margaret Lindsey Markot
The 'Entente' Of The Narrator: A Poet Speaks To His Audience In Chaucer's Versions Of The Dido And Aeneas Legend, Margaret Lindsey Markot
Doctoral Dissertations
In Book I of The House of Fame and in "The Legend of Dido" in The Legend of Good Women, Geoffrey Chaucer offers his versions of the classical love story of Dido and Aeneas. Each story is told through the voice of a well-developed narrator who regularly interrupts his narration to speak to an audience addressed in the poem. This study investigates the relationships between the narrator and his addressed audience and the narrator and his text. It further suggests ways in which Chaucer sought to explore the potential of the English poet through the creation of a poet/narrator who …
A Guide To Niu Computer Facilities, Sandra Denise Saylor
A Guide To Niu Computer Facilities, Sandra Denise Saylor
Honors Capstones
Northern Illinois University provides an extremely modern and diverse computing environment for its students, faculty, and staff. Computer facilities on campus include an on-site Amdahl mainframe computer, IBM and Harris minicomputers, and IBM, Apple, Kaypro, and Corona microcomputers. The diverse computer facilities at NIU help meet the computing needs of thousands of people, from almost every academic and administrative department on campus. But for those individuals new to the campus, this diversity often makes it difficult to determine exactly what facilities exist on campus, which of these facilities they can and should access, and how they can learn to access …
A Whole-Language Approach To Bilingual Language Arts Curriculum, Grades K-4, Martha M. Floyd
A Whole-Language Approach To Bilingual Language Arts Curriculum, Grades K-4, Martha M. Floyd
All Graduate Projects
Bilingual Language Arts objectives were established by grade level, K-4, in both Spanish and English. One hundred six limited English proficient students are participants in the bilingual program for which this curriculum was designed. This study suggests how selected objectives can be implemented using a whole language approach during a 1-week cultural unit. The intent of the curriculum design was that children learn language naturally when it is in a meaningful context. Implications for success in using a whole-language approach are discussed.
Forest Conservation In Nepal: Encouraging Women's Participation, Augusta Molnar
Forest Conservation In Nepal: Encouraging Women's Participation, Augusta Molnar
Poverty, Gender, and Youth
This issue of SEEDS focuses on ways in which women have been involved in a government forest conservation and restoration program in Nepal. As is common with many large-scale projects with a general impact, women were not a direct focus of the project's original design. As activities got underway, however, both the Nepali staff and their expatriate colleagues quickly realized that the direct involvement of women was crucial to the success of the project's participatory strategy. Over the initial five years, 1980 to 1985, a number of approaches to addressing women's needs and generating their active participation were tried. The …
Rebirth Through Narrative: John Bunyan's Autobiographies ("Grace Abounding To The Chief Of Sinners")., Constance A. Douglas
Rebirth Through Narrative: John Bunyan's Autobiographies ("Grace Abounding To The Chief Of Sinners")., Constance A. Douglas
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
John Bunyan, while in Bedford gaol, composed two autobiographical narratives, one published in 1666, titled Grace Abounding to the Chief of Sinners, and a second, published posthumously in 1765, titled A Relation of the Imprisonment of Mr. John Bunyan. Since its recovery, the Relation has been published as the concluding section of Grace Abounding, seemingly suggesting that the doubting sinner of Grace Abounding demonstrates his assurance of salvation by becoming the confident spokesman for dissent in the Relation. In this study, however, I argue that the Relation is Bunyan's first self-construction from prison and Grace Abounding the second; thus the …

Figure Eight : A Collection Of Short Stories, Martha Kilgore Rice
Figure Eight : A Collection Of Short Stories, Martha Kilgore Rice
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
Most of the eight stories in this collection are about individuals who are alienated. They are unable or unwilling to break through the barriers that separate them from others. The stories are contemporary; the settings are urban/suburban. The past plays an important part in defining and limiting the present, and fantasy sometimes replaces reality as an option for dealing with the loneliness of isolation. Direct confrontation is another option. Desire for power and the need for assertiveness are important elements in the action of the stories. By contrast, retreat into submission may become the sad alternative.

A Computer Assisted Instructional Program To Facilitate Eleventh Grade Remediation In Skill H68, Direct Address, Audrey P. Dunn
A Computer Assisted Instructional Program To Facilitate Eleventh Grade Remediation In Skill H68, Direct Address, Audrey P. Dunn
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
The author created and implemented a computer assisted instruction (CAI) program to remediate juniors in skill H68, dealing with direct address. This skill is found on the State Student Assessment Test, Part I. The program's aims were to increase student achievement, alleviate the problems of management, improve student attitude, and teach basic computer literacy to below average students.
The program consisted of two lessons, each dealing with one component of the skill of using the comma to set off proper names in direct address. The study group included all eleventh grade students who failed to master this skill. 100% achieved …
