Who was the masked man in Alexander Dumas’ The Iron Mask? What were the circumstances that led up to his entrapment in the mask? Most of us are fascinated by the mystery that surrounds the use of masks. The ancient Greeks used masks in their dramas to create expressions of sorrow, anger, joy, etc. Masks enabled actors to hide their true selves -- actors merely playing a part. One of the basic character types in Greek drama was the trickster who pretended to be ignorant, “thereby provoking somebody else to reveal his most ludicrous side” (Jones and Wilson 194). In …

"To Enter Arcanum": Gnosticism In Ezra Pound's "Cantos", Demetres P. Tryphonopoulos Jan 1988

"To Enter Arcanum": Gnosticism In Ezra Pound's "Cantos", Demetres P. Tryphonopoulos

Digitized Theses

Despite the painstaking work of Pound scholars, the mythos of the Cantos has yet to be properly understood, because its occult sources have not been examined sufficiently. The "occult" here includes the body of speculative, heterodox religious thought which lies outside all religious doxologies--including Gnosticism, Hermeticism, Neoplatonism, Cabalism, and Theosophy. As well, occultism involves belief in gnosis or direct awareness of the Divine which can be attained through myesis or ritual initiation.;Drawing upon recently published material and unpublished Pound letters, the thesis traces Pound's intimate engagement with specific occultists (Mead, Upward, and Orage) and their ideas, and argues that speculative …

Friends And Rivals, Edith Wharton's Women, Susan L. Goodman Jan 1988

Friends And Rivals, Edith Wharton's Women, Susan L. Goodman

Doctoral Dissertations

Based on primary research, my dissertation, "Friends and Rivals, Edith Wharton's Women," examines the two plots that the author used throughout her career. Her dominant plot is outlined in "Souls Belated" (1899), the tale of a women who escapes a conventionaly stifling marriage only to discover that she and her lover have no choice but to duplicate the union she has just fled. It shows the ways in which Wharton challenged but never escaped the restrictions of the marriage plot. The following year she wrote "Friends" (1900), a story that overtly articulates the subplot that I trace in her fiction. …

Effects Of Irish Folk Literature & Myth On Irish Playwrights, Janet M. Schneider Jan 1988

Effects Of Irish Folk Literature & Myth On Irish Playwrights, Janet M. Schneider

Honors Capstones

The project is comprised of three papers, each covering a different subject, but still staying under the umbrella topic of the effects of Irish folk literature and myth on Irish playwrights. A short biography of Standish O’Grady, the father of the Irish Literary Renaissance, starts off the project. Next is a comparison/contrast of J.M. Synge’s and W.B. Yeats’ treatments of the “Deirdre” myth in their respective “Deirdre” plays. Finally, an analysis of the mother goddess influence on Sean O’Casey’s “Juno and the Paycock” concludes the overall project. By covering three separate topics, the thesis has a more in-depth, expansive basis.

Beneath The Surface Of The New Age Movement, Margaret Ortigara Jan 1988

Beneath The Surface Of The New Age Movement, Margaret Ortigara

Honors Capstones

The paper begins with several definitions of the New Age movement, both from writers within the movement and critics of it. Then key New Age beliefs and ideas are discussed, such as the ultimate oneness of all things, reincarnation, crystals, channeling, and the harmonic convergence. Next, articles discussing new Age from popular newspapers and magazines are analyzed. The lighthearted tone and general lack of depth in most of these articles is criticized. The third section of the paper looks at how ideas of Christianity are undermined by the New Age movement and the use of deceptive and confusing language are …

The Literary Traveler As A Metaphor Of A Human Psychological Cycle, Jeff Guga Jan 1988

The Literary Traveler As A Metaphor Of A Human Psychological Cycle, Jeff Guga

Honors Capstones

Readers of literature are frequently exposed to principal characters who are travelers. The traveler and his adventure are metaphors of a human psychological cycle—a cycle driven by the need to come to terms with our forthcoming deaths and a cycle which ends, if successful, with a perceived understanding of his or her existence. In pursuing this thesis, an analysis is made of the following novels: Candide, Don Quixote, Gulliver’s Travels, and the Divine Comedy (three books).

Musical Theatre Lost And Found : "The Golden Apple", Neil Tobin Jan 1988

Musical Theatre Lost And Found : "The Golden Apple", Neil Tobin

Honors Capstones

“The Golden Apple” is an undeservingly forgotten milestone of the American musical. It was of great value in 1954: it had stunning choreography, great sets, a creative director and performers. It was influential, in that it was the first truly integrated musical, in which music and dance were blended completely into the narrative. And it was unanimously praised by critics and audiences alike but, due to mismanagement, wasn’t sustained on Broadway long enough to carve an enduring niche for itself. Despite this misfortune, the show still has lasting value: in its entertaining but intelligent plot, which is based on Homer’s …

The Port Sudan Small Scale Enterprise Program, Eve Hall Jan 1988

The Port Sudan Small Scale Enterprise Program, Eve Hall

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

Euro-Action ACORD (EAA) is a consortium of 20 European and Canadian aid agencies working in refugee farming settlements in Central and Southern Sudan, and with various rural development projects in other parts of Africa, which responded to a request from the Sudanese Commissioner of Refugees to work in Port Sudan. This was the first time the agency considered working with poor urban people, and staff were determined to understand the economic and social forces which governed life in the slums. The program noted a number of findings that will help determine its future: reaching out to women where they live …

Lessons Of The Masters: Social Tension As A Creative Necessity In The Fiction Of Hawthorne, James, And Joyce., Craig Arthur Milliman Jan 1988

Lessons Of The Masters: Social Tension As A Creative Necessity In The Fiction Of Hawthorne, James, And Joyce., Craig Arthur Milliman

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

A study of talented characters reveals that three of the most influential novelists in English dealt with the often disabling image of the artist they had inherited from their Romantic forebears by insisting on dialectical tension between the artist and society as essential to the creation of literary art. The various talented characters in Hawthorne's short fiction, such as Aylmer, Rappaccini, Oberon, the Canterbury poet, the portrait painter of "The Prophetic Pictures," the woodcarver Drowne, and Owen Warland, fail to create art unless they retain certain links with their societies of origin. This tension between artist and society appears as …

A Comparison Of Holistic And Analytic Scoring Scales For Evaluating Essays, Barbara B. Wilson Jan 1988

A Comparison Of Holistic And Analytic Scoring Scales For Evaluating Essays, Barbara B. Wilson

Theses and Dissertations

The focus of the study was to see if there was a significant difference among the final scores of essays written by eleventh and twelfth grade students as scored by teacher raters. In addition, the study addressed whether or not raters scored expressive essays higher than expository essays.

In order to demonstrate the efficacy of existing scoring scales, some 175 expressive essays and 158 expository essays were obtained from two area high schools located in the southeastern United States. From these essays, fifteen expressive and fifteen expository essays were randomly selected and scored using a Diederich holistic scoring scale, a …

Scources Of Liberty In The Texas Bill Of Rights., Arvel (Rod) Ponton Iii Jan 1988

Scources Of Liberty In The Texas Bill Of Rights., Arvel (Rod) Ponton Iii

St. Mary's Law Journal

Many historical, economic, and philosophical forces have combined to create a uniquely “Texian” perspective on liberty that has heavily influenced the Texas Bill of Rights. The original Texas Bill of Rights was drafted in 1836, during the ascendancy of Jacksonian democracy, following the successful revolt from the military dictatorship of General Santa Anna. Texans had lived under Spanish civil law, Mexican constitutional law, a Mexican military dictatorship, English common law, and the Bill of Rights of the United States. The Texas Revolution, the fact that many Texans looked to American and English jurisprudence for guidance, the violation of many rights …

Mail is seductive. I'm talking about the power that draws us inextricably to our mailboxes each evening to pore over letters, sweepstakes invitations, and yuppie catalogs. Imagine what happens when that power is integrated into a "hot" medium - the computer. The result? Electronic mail, casually known as e-mail.

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this research was to develop recommendations for a preparatory English language program for hearing-impaired college students for Clark County Community College, Las Vegas, Nevada, and other concerned colleges that do not presently offer such a program. A questionnaire designed to elicit program information regarding the goals and objectives, instructional practices and procedures, assessment and evaluation, and major problems and solutions was developed. The questionnaire was sent to directors of current preparatory hearing-impaired English language programs in two-year, liberal arts colleges; An analysis of the data received revealed a good deal of diversity as well as considerable similarity …

In Hope Of Heaven: English Recusant Prison Writings Of The Sixteenth Century, Paul E Strauss Jan 1988

In Hope Of Heaven: English Recusant Prison Writings Of The Sixteenth Century, Paul E Strauss

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This dissertation focuses on the prison writings of four Catholic writers in sixteenth century England, all of whom were imprisoned for their failure to take the Oath of Supremacy acknowledging the English monarch as Head of the Church. They were all executed or exiled for their resistance to the Oath. They also wrote books while they were in prison to encourage themselves and others to persist in the faith, with the exception of Robert Southwell, who wrote his book shortly before his imprisonment; John Fisher was imprisoned in 1534 and executed in 1535. While in prison he wrote two letters …
