The Muek-Lek Women's Dairy Project In Thailand, Aruna Rao Jan 1990

The Muek-Lek Women's Dairy Project In Thailand, Aruna Rao

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

This issue of SEEDS describes a project that was started in 1985 to encourage the growth of a new agricultural sector, dairy farming, in Thailand. While the major aim of the project was to increase incomes of rural families in the Muek-Lek Land Reform Area in Saraburi Province, Central Thailand, it also sought to integrate women into dairying activities, and offer these women, whether married or single, access to credit. The Muek-Lek Dairy Project is unique in that it channeled government resources and secured commercial bank financing to make women the key participants in a relatively new and growing agricultural …

British Romanticism And Composition Theory: The Traditions And Value Of Romantic Rhetoric, Sherrie L. Gradin Jan 1990

British Romanticism And Composition Theory: The Traditions And Value Of Romantic Rhetoric, Sherrie L. Gradin

Doctoral Dissertations

My study examines, through the philosophies and writings of the British Romantic poets, particularly those of Wordsworth and Coleridge, their beliefs about education, their theories on composing, and their interaction with the political and social climate as they relate to current expressivist rhetorical theories and pedagogies. I explore the ways in which Romantic assumptions surface in subsequent philosophers, educators, and rhetoricians such as Matthew Arnold, John Stuart Mill, and John Dewey, and more recently, Ann Berthoff, Donald Murray, and Peter Elbow. I argue that like the Romantics, current expressivists are interested in cultivating an imaginative intellect in their writing students. …

Man/Hombre/Homme: Meeting Male Reproductive Health Care Needs In Latin America, Debbie Rogow, Judith Bruce, Ann Leonard Jan 1990

Man/Hombre/Homme: Meeting Male Reproductive Health Care Needs In Latin America, Debbie Rogow, Judith Bruce, Ann Leonard

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

This edition of Quality/Calidad/Qualité answers the following question: how can family planning programs understand and better serve the interests of men? The proposals in the article are derived from the experience of PRO-PATER, in São Paulo, Brazil, and briefly, from the activities of the Profamilia Men’s Clinic in Colombia. The experiences of both PRO-PATER and Profamilia suggest that, although the reproductive health needs of men may be different from those of women, they are still very interested. It is clear that there is abundant demand for high-quality services that offer convenience, confidentiality, information, attentive providers, and attention to reproductive health …

Fundamental Elements Of The Quality Of Care: A Simple Framework, Judith Bruce Jan 1990

Fundamental Elements Of The Quality Of Care: A Simple Framework, Judith Bruce

Reproductive Health

This article argues for attention to a neglected dimension of family planning services—their quality. A framework for assessing quality from the client’s perspective is offered, consisting of six parts (choice of methods, information given to clients, technical competence, interpersonal relations, follow-up and continuity mechanisms, and the appropriate constellation of services). The literature is reviewed regarding evidence that improvements in these various dimensions of care result in gains at the individual level; an even scarcer body of literature is reviewed for evidence of gains at the level of program efficiency and impact. A concluding section discusses how to make practical use …

Strategies For Increasing Contraceptive Use In Factories In Barbados, Charles Alleyne, Elrene Sealy, Pauline Russell-Brown Jan 1990

Strategies For Increasing Contraceptive Use In Factories In Barbados, Charles Alleyne, Elrene Sealy, Pauline Russell-Brown

Reproductive Health

This report outlines results of a study on factory-based family planning operations. The 18-month study compared the relative effectiveness of two interventions: 1) ongoing contraceptive distribution by a trained factory employee supported by monthly education visits by the Barbados Family Planning Association (BFPA); and 2) monthly service and education visits by the BFPA. Service and survey data indicated that the education/information program component was stronger than the contraceptive delivery component. There were remarkable increases in the employees' knowledge of contraceptive methods, especially in factories with employee distributors.

English-Only Rules And The Right To Speak One's Primary Language In The Workplace, Juan F. Perea Jan 1990

English-Only Rules And The Right To Speak One's Primary Language In The Workplace, Juan F. Perea

University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform

This Article analyzes the issues raised by English-only rules and the decisions discussing these rules. Part I reviews the leading cases on English-only rules. The Article then explores several issues that must be considered in deciding any English-only rule case under Title VII. Part II addresses whether speaking one's primary language should constitute a protected right as an aspect of national origin under Title VII. This Article argues that primary language should be protected under Title VII for several reasons: the courts and the EEOC construe the term "national origin" broadly; primary language constitutes a fundamental aspect of ethnicity and …

Teaching In A Liberal Arts College: How Foreign Language Courses Contribute To "Writing Across The Curriculum" Programs, Ilona Klein Jan 1990

Teaching In A Liberal Arts College: How Foreign Language Courses Contribute To "Writing Across The Curriculum" Programs, Ilona Klein

Faculty Publications

This essay shares some thoughts about the need for interaction between foreign language instructors and English teachers, both in high schools and at the university level. As a foreign language teacher for the past nine years (the last four in a liberal arts college), I have encountered several problems and difficulties that could be overcome, I believe, if English, Writing, and Foreign Language departments addressed them together. I do not claim to be able to give definite answers, since many pedagogical concepts concerting L2 acquisition/learning and their possible application to writing programs remain misunderstood or are presently debated by teacher …

Tümpisa (Panamint) Shoshone Dictionary, Jon P. Dayley Jan 1989

Tümpisa (Panamint) Shoshone Dictionary, Jon P. Dayley

Faculty & Staff Authored Books

This dictionary is primarily of the Death Valley variety of what has come to be known in the linguistic and anthropological literature in recent years as Panamint (e.g., Freeze and Iannucci 1979; Lamb 1958 and 1964; McLaughlin 1987; Miller 1984), or sometimes Panamint Shoshone (Miller et al. 1971). In the nineteenth century and up to the middle of this century, it was often called Coso (sometimes spelled Koso) or Coso Shoshone (e.g., Kroeber 1925; Lamb 1958). In aboriginal times and even well into this century, Panamint was spoken by small bands of people living in southeastern California and extreme southwestern …

Some Aspects Of Browning's Satire: Browning, Donne, And Mandeville, Barbara Ruth Ryerse Jan 1989

Some Aspects Of Browning's Satire: Browning, Donne, And Mandeville, Barbara Ruth Ryerse

Digitized Theses

The purpose of this study is to show that some aspects of Browning's satire clarify his use of tradition by indicating his readiness to appropriate and adapt satiric forms of ancient origin to his own poetic purposes. A main focus on religious, aesthetic, and satiric elements in Christmas-Eve and Easter-Day leads to a comparison of this poem with the Satyres of John Donne that were written in the tradition of formal verse satire. Similarly, the later poem With Bernard de Mandeville is compared to Mandeville's The Fable of the Bees and the tradition of Menippean satire. These comparisons reveal common …

Los And The Science Of The Elohim, John Michael Smith Jan 1989

Los And The Science Of The Elohim, John Michael Smith

Digitized Theses

This study re-examines what have been commonplace propositions for Blake criticism: that Los is Blake's chief symbol for the activity of imagination in the prophecies; that the theme of Los's labours, his attempt in Golgonooza to practise "the Science of the Elohim," serves as a focus for Blake's critique of, and alternative to, the science of "Bacon, Newton and Locke"; and that Blake's opposition to the latter stems from his rejection of its "Cartesian" foundation, its dualism of mind and body, subjective and objective realms. This study begins by attempting to show that, while we have agreed to place Los …

Layers Of Identity: Multiple Voices And Contradictory Patterns In Spenser's "Shepheardes Calender", Marianne Micros Jan 1989

Layers Of Identity: Multiple Voices And Contradictory Patterns In Spenser's "Shepheardes Calender", Marianne Micros

Digitized Theses

Spenser, in his Shepheardes Calender, created "a Calender for euery yeare," but the calendar of each speaker, and possibly of every reader, varies based on a person's attitude towards his or her place in the natural and cosmic cycles. Although many critics have tried to impose regularity of structure and content on Spenser's poem, and have attempted to define Spenser's viewpoint, it seems likely that Spenser was not attempting to present one consistent, inflexible viewpoint.;I propose that The Shepheardes Calender is a work consisting of many voices, not only the voices of the fictional characters within the work, but also …

Tümpisa (Panamint) Shoshone Grammar, Jon P. Dayley

Faculty & Staff Authored Books

This monograph is an introductory descriptive grammar of Tümpisa Shoshone, meant to provide both layman and specialist with a basic understanding of how the language works as a linguistic system. Translation : A Perspective, Denise Leigh Wiegand Jan 1989

Translation : A Perspective, Denise Leigh Wiegand

Honors Capstones

I have spent the last six months collecting, reading, and translating Spanish poetry. The result of this work is a collection of my favorite Spanish poems. One of the most interesting facts about my “anthology” is the variety within it. The geographic spectrum includes Argentina, Colombia, Mexico, Nicaragua, and Spain. Some poems are a page long, some are sonnets, and a few consist of just two or three lines. Devising a translation process, overcoming a few translation problems, and seeing the final project made my independent study translation project a very rewarding experience. And, as a poet myself, I realized …

Writing And Speaking Persuasively : A Manual For The Professional Animal Protection Advocate, Sandra Renee Delery Jan 1989

Writing And Speaking Persuasively : A Manual For The Professional Animal Protection Advocate, Sandra Renee Delery

Honors Capstones

My Capstone project is the result of my interships with the national alliance for Animals’ Legislation and the law firm of Galvin, Stanley and Hazard. During these interships I was exposed to numerous experiences that, upon my analysis, gave me insight into how to effectively persuade others in reference to animal protection. In addition to my internship experiences, I relied on previous readings and pre-internship experiences to enhance the project. I chose a manual format for easy reader comprehension and reference. The conclusions of my project are as follows: 1: It is necessary for the professional animal protection advocate to …

Celebrating Mother And Child On The Fortieth Day: The Sfax Tunisia Postpartum Program, Francine Coeytaux, Beverly Winikoff

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

This edition of Quality/Calidad/Qualité gives information about a postnatal family planning program in the Sfax Center of the Tunisia Maternity and Newborns Hospital. This program, developed jointly by the national family planning program and the Maternity staff, has had extraordinary success in getting more mothers to return after six weeks for their postnatal visit. During the visit, the period between births is discussed; and family planning services are offered as an important means for achieving both the recovery and good health of the mother, as well as the physical and mental development of the infant. The report describes a few …

Huckleberry Finn: Conduct Disordered Adolescent, Emerging Sociopath, Or American Hero?, Robert J. Golonka

Student Work

In a “Notice” to the first edition of his Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Mark Twain warned: “Persons attempting to find a motive in this narrative will be prosecuted; Persons attempting to find a moral in it will be banished; Persons attempting to find a plot in it will be shot” (Twain xxv). Critics have generally paid little attention to these cautionary remarks. In the one hundred and three years since its publication, Twain's novel has enjoyed major critical acclaim. Adventures of Huckleberry Finn has also been the subject of considerable critical debate.

The purpose of this investigation will be t …

Zwischen Deutsch Und Englisch Bilingual Puns Nov 1988

Zwischen Deutsch Und Englisch Bilingual Puns

Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter

GRANDMOTHER'S PUNS Grandmother Joss had a quiet sense of humor and was not above having a little fun with the language: In Bensenville the church bell was rung at 5 p.m. every Saturday afternoon to remind us that the following day would be Sunday and our presence in church would be appreciated. Grandmother's usual comment was: "Ah, die Kirche bellt schon."
