Some Issues In The Testing Of Computer Simulation Models, David J. Murray-Smith
Some Issues In The Testing Of Computer Simulation Models, David J. Murray-Smith
International Journal of Business and Technology
The testing of simulation models has much in common with testing processes in other types of application involving software development. However, there are also important differences associated with the fact that simulation model testing involves two distinct aspects, which are known as verification and validation. Model validation is concerned with investigation of modelling errors and model limitations while verification involves checking that the simulation program is an accurate representation of the mathematical and logical structure of the underlying model. Success in model validation depends upon the availability of detailed information about all aspects of the system being modelled. It also …

Department of Nutrition and Health Sciences: Faculty Publications
Background: Increased intakes of ready-made and fast foods paralleled with decreased homemade food consumption have been associated with increased rates of obesity. Researchers have shown associations between cooking self-efficacy (SE) and cooking frequency (CF) with dietary quality and weight status. Some cooking interventions have shown positive associations with dietary outcomes, such as increased fruit and vegetable intake and decreased fast food consumption. There is still much unknown about SE and CF, especially among youth.
Objective: Determine baseline SE and CF and the associations with dietary quality and body mass index (BMI) of youth enrolled in iCook 4H.
Methods: Youth (n …

Beyond The Campus: Heroism As A Case Study For Extending Researchers' Influence Through K-12 Lesson Plans, Ari Kohen, Andre Solo
Heroism Science
As a result of their training, college professors are subject matter experts who have the task of conveying ideas to students and to the public at large. They accomplish this, in large measure, through their research and their teaching. In this article, we consider an important alternative way in which professors can broaden their reach by creating lesson plans for students beyond their own classrooms—at very little time investment. We use as a case study our own lesson plan on heroism, which draws on expertise in political theory and psychology, in order to demonstrate the way in which such a …

“You remember Kayla?”
“Kayla Riddle?”
“Yeah. You know she’s a boy now?”
“Oh no shit! Not surprised, kinda saw that one coming.”
As I sit with a high school friend on back porch of her trailer, I quickly realize that most of my middle-class, leftist/liberal friends would jump on how we phrase Kai’s coming out. But sitting here, helping Amber figure out how much dope she’d need to sling to make rent this month, calling out mildly transphobic language isn’t a priority. …

Primary Trauma Care: A Training Course For Healthcare Providers In Developing Countries, Saqib Kamran Bakhshi, Rashid Jooma
Section of Neurosurgery
Outcomes of injury in low and middle income countries may be compromised by skill deficiencies of healthcare providers. Short subspecialty training courses can be a useful solution to skill-deficits. We report on the Primary Trauma Care programme, a 2-day course designed to train frontline health workers in resuscitation and early management of the injured with limited resources and equipment. Developed for use in weak health systems and now conducted in over 70 countries, the programme is cost-efficient with built-in design sustainability by way of early transfer of ownership to local partners to effect a cascade of trauma courses in their …

Finding The Public: Models Of Interaction Between Curatorial And Education Departments In Three American Encyclopedic Museums, Liam Sweeney
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Curatorial and education departments have coexisted for the last half century in American art museums, and have often had differing attitudes about who the museum is for and how best to convey the current and historical meaning of the works they display. This results from trends and transformations in the field, which have recently yielded an increased attention on broadening the definition of the public that the museum serves. This thesis examines interactions between curatorial and education departments in three encyclopedic art museums across the United States, in order to better understand how meaningful collaboration can be fostered between these …
No Place For Speech Zones: How Colleges Engage In Expressive Gerrymandering, A. Celia Howard
No Place For Speech Zones: How Colleges Engage In Expressive Gerrymandering, A. Celia Howard
Georgia State University Law Review
This note takes a critical look at the shortcomings of the current tests applied to speech zone litigation as well as the constitutional violations that occur when public schools carve out speech areas. Part I examines the evolution of First Amendment law in education, with a focus on university free speech zones. Part II analyzes the convoluted First Amendment jurisprudence, suggesting that the time, place, and manner test, typically used in conjunction with a forum analysis when examining the constitutionality of speech zones, allows universities to practice what is known as “expressive gerrymandering.” Finally, Part III proposes that courts eliminate …

The Equal Right To Sing: The American Zeitgeist And Its Implications For Music Education, Youngeun Kim
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
According to music educators and proponents of arts education, music education in U.S. public schools seems to be in jeopardy. This thesis brings attention to several issues in current music education. It is a case study of music education in New York City public elementary schools. First, it shows that music education is not equally distributed to all students in the public-school system and is especially unequal among elementary schools. Next, it investigates possible causes for this inequality, from the current system’s limitations to more fundamental causes including the cultural perception of music among the U.S. public. The consequences of …

Implementing A Multi-Tiered Behavioral Framework System In Seven K-4 Element Aries, Brad J. Dahl
Student Work
The purpose of this study was to complete a formative check of the Multi-Tiered Behavior Framework (MTBF) implementation by gathering elementary teacher and administrator perceptions. These perceptions of implementation are used to inform system-wide action for successful implementation of MTBF. The theoretical framework which guided this study was the Deming Cycle: Plan, Do, Check, Act (Deming, 1950). This framework allowed for the analysis of the project results compared to the expectations. Use of this data enabled the district to more effectively infuse the Multi-Tiered Behavioral Framework system into the instructional design and improve school climate. This study examined the implementation …

Gaps In Safe Food Handling Practices Of Older Adults, Lelee Yap, Sarah L. Francis, Mack C. Shelley Ii, Doris Montgomery, Catherine J. Lillehoj
Journal of Extension
We identified gaps in safe food handling practices that may be placing older adults at increased risk of food-borne illness. A convenience sample of 1,019 older adults completed the Food Safety Behavior Questionnaire. Majority groups among participants were those who were female, those who were White, and those who were widowed. Participants had lower adherences to safe practices related to temperature control, attention to sell-by/use-by dates on food packages, and cross-contamination. Adherences were significantly (p < .05) influenced by gender, race/ethnicity, age, marital status, and education. Our findings suggest the need for older adult–focused safe food handling education related to temperature control, product selection practices, and cross-contamination.

Humane Education-Vaccinate Against Violence, Andrew N. Rowan
Humane Education-Vaccinate Against Violence, Andrew N. Rowan
WellBeing News
Humane education – teaching children to be kind to animals and not be cruel – is one of the foundations of the global animal protection movement. Today, we have a growing literature and considerable data on the link between animal abuse and abuse of humans but very little direct evidence that teaching and supporting humane education has had any impact on improving human-to-human interactions.
