Student Perceptions Of Reasons For Lecture And Active Learning, Calan Koch Mar 2019

Student Perceptions Of Reasons For Lecture And Active Learning, Calan Koch

Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)

With perceived student resistance to active learning in the classroom, instructors are hesitant to implement such methods into their classroom structure despite how effective they may be. This research seeks to understand student perceptions related to the transition to higher prevalence of active learning techniques. We aimed to find answers to how students perceive the ideal classroom to be structured, what reasons they perceive for lecture and active learning components, and possible explanations to concerns of groupwork during class time. We analyzed 64 interviews with undergraduate biology students at the University of Nebraska- Lincoln, developed coding rubrics from commonly found …

How To Be Singaporean: Becoming Global National Citizens And The National Dimension In Cosmopolitan Openness, Wen Li Thian Mar 2019

How To Be Singaporean: Becoming Global National Citizens And The National Dimension In Cosmopolitan Openness, Wen Li Thian

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

This paper looks at how cosmopolitanism is practised amongst Singaporeans who have experienced Singapore’s education reform in the 1990s. Cosmopolitanism in Singapore is tied to state-intervention with a national orientation. To complement Singapore’s push towards cosmopolitanism, the education reform in the 1990s promoted the idea of a national citizen with a global orientation. I looked at 40 Singaporeans born after the year 1990 to investigate cosmopolitan attitudes that have emerged from the tensions between cosmopolitanism and nationalism. To meet the state’s ideals of cosmopolitanism, these Singaporeans employed strategies to practice a particular form of cosmopolitan openness which prioritise national interests. …

Journal of Educational Leadership in Action

Indigenous learners represent a pool of untapped talents for positively influencing Canada’s economy. But there is a policy need to better enable indigenous learners’ access to higher education. This study presents a synthesis of views and perspectives extracted from eight published studies concerning Aboriginal educational experiences. Canadian indigenous learners were found to have the following views regarding their experiences with post-secondary education: anxiety about moving away from home, trepidation about transitioning from rural to urban spaces, uncertainty about social acceptance and long-term prospects; fear of racism and racial exclusion; and worry that their traditions will not be acknowledged or respected.

Title Ix And Title Vii: Parallel Remedies In Combatting Sex Discrimination In Educational Employment, Lynn Ridgeway Zehrt

Marquette Law Review

The federal circuit courts of appeals are divided over the proper relationship between Title IX of the Higher Education Amendments Act of 1972 and Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Specifically, the federal courts disagree over whether an employee of an educational institution may sue her employer for employment discrimination under either Title IX or Title VII. Some courts have concluded that these employees may not bring employment discrimination claims under Title IX, holding that Title VII provides the sole avenue for obtaining monetary relief for employment discrimination against educational institutions. Other courts have reached the opposite …

Parents are one of the stakeholders who had had concerns about another standardized test, but they also recognize the need. A survey was conducted of parents whose children took PARCC to learn their expectations of the …

Locating A New Collegiate Entrepreneurship Program, A Framework For A University Campus, Douglas H. Carter

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

University Entrepreneurship Programs reside is a variety of places within a Campus Community. As a relatively new university, the question arises as to where such a program should reside? Should such a program be relegated to a single college or is there an opportunity for a cross-disciplinary approach to its establishment? With limited resources, it is imperative to make an educated and informed decision so as to be good stewards of limited funding.

Food, Connection And Care: Perspectives Of Service Providers In Alternative Education And Training Settings, Michelle Share, Marita Hennessy

Irish Journal of Applied Social Studies

While the formal school system has been the focus for researchers, practitioners and policy-makers for food and nutrition-related research and interventions, there has been less attention to the Alternative Education and Training (AET) sector. A qualitative social ecological examination of food issues among marginalised young people in Irish alternative education and training settings was conducted through interviews with 15 service providers. We aimed to provide insight into the everyday food practices of young people in AETs, understand educational responses to food and eating in AETs, and determine how these educational responses might be optimised. Through a socio-ecological framework, we examined …

Implementing Tasks That Promote Reasoning And Problem-Solving In Education, Carl Adams, Henreta Jarrett, Vivian Yakpo Newton

Student Articles

Learning takes place every day, which makes it one of the critical aspects of life. The achievements and things that people do in life is a product of the things they have learned throughout the life cycle. They are a collection of their experiences and the things they learn whether informally or otherwise. As such, it is critical to focus on the learning environment, the teaching models, and basically all elements involved in the learning process. Certainly, the process of learning influences the behavior, attitude, and perceptions of the learners. In this way, any attempts to raise individuals who depict …

Gender Difference In Indian Consumption Expenditure., Mannu Dwivedi Dr.

Doctoral Theses

The goal of any development policy is to increase the living standard of the people in the society. In any developing country, the efficiency of such policy depends on how families reallocate the resources among themselves. If the distribution is even within the family then only it can be said that the policy was fruitful. Therefore, a family is an important part of any policy and the allocation within the family should be just. But, the distribution of the resources among the family members are not always equal. Inequality always exists! Discrimination against girls or women persists in approximately all …

Have No Fear! White Ladies Are Here!: Interrogating The Image And Institutionalization Of White Womanhood In The Classroom, Sophie Nadler Feb 2019

Have No Fear! White Ladies Are Here!: Interrogating The Image And Institutionalization Of White Womanhood In The Classroom, Sophie Nadler

Tapestries: Interwoven voices of local and global identities

Using an interdisciplinary approach, this project examines how the American conception of white womanhood has informed and molded perceptions of what makes a “good” teacher. By examining historical and contemporary film-based discourses around white womanhood, it is clear that teaching has been transformed into another form of mothering, tying the teaching field to the white woman. This discursive connection is made seemingly permanent through the institutionalization of the white woman in the classroom. This paper will then begin to explore how this process has affected the larger educational system. Ultimately, this project hopes to encourage white women in education to …

The Nature Of Science As A Foundation For Fostering A Better Understanding Of Evolution, Craig E. Nelson, Lawrence C. Scharmann, Jean Beard, Lawrence I. Flammer Feb 2019

The Nature Of Science As A Foundation For Fostering A Better Understanding Of Evolution, Craig E. Nelson, Lawrence C. Scharmann, Jean Beard, Lawrence I. Flammer

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications

Misunderstandings of the nature of science (NOS) contribute greatly to resistance to evolutionary theory especially among non-scientific audiences. Here we delineate three extended instructional examples that make extensive use of NOS to establish a foundation upon which to more successfully introduce evolution. Specifically, these instructional examples enable students to consider evolutionary biology using NOS as a lens for interpretation of evolutionary concepts. We have further found, through our respective research efforts and instructional experiences, that a deep understanding of NOS helps students understand and accept the scientific validity of evolution and, conversely, that evolution provides an especially effective context for …

Language, Technology, And Engagement In The Haitian Classroom: An Interim Report On The Mit-Haiti Initiative, Haynes Miller

CODEE Journal

Since 2013 I have been traveling to Haiti as part of the "MIT- Haiti Initiative." This initiative, led by Professor Michel DeGraff of the MIT Department of Linguistics and Philosophy, aims to encourage active learning strategies, enabled by technology when possible and appropriate, and strongly stresses the importance of the use of the one language spoken by all Haitians, namely Haitian Creole (or Kreyòl). To use a Haitian metaphor, these three components form the three stones on which the cook-pot of our educational approach rests. We have focused our attention on the higher education sector.

In this note I …
