The Impact Of Social Media In Research Publicity And Visibility, Chiegonu Nwachi, Josephine Igbokwe
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
This study is on social media and its impact on research publicity and visibility. Social media has grown beyond its original purpose of connecting people all over the globe. Today, the ease of interacting with millions of social media users in a cost effective and real-time manner has given rise to the creation of highly engaging online content by users from diverse professional and personal backgrounds. In the past, knowledge constructs consulted by scholars were mostly in the form of printed or hard copies (books, newspapers, journals, etc), and although this format was instrumental in the development of knowledge generation …

Using longitudinal data from the China Health and Nutrition Survey (CHNS) from 1989 to 2011, and both instrumental variable and fixed effects estimation to control for the endogeneity of body weight, I examine the wage effect of BMI by gender, type of residence area, and occupation. Results from linear OLS regression show a positive relationship between body weight and income for males in both rural and urban areas and females in rural areas, while a negative one for females in urban areas. After controlling for the unobserved individual …

Children's Books About Worship, Kristen Verhulst, Maria Eugenia Cornou Phd, Joel Schoon-Tanis
Symposium on Worship Archive
There are a number of wonderful children’s books that help church school leaders, educators, parents, and grandparents teach children about worship. These books focus on the sacraments, the Christian year, the psalms, and prayer. Children’s books provide another means to welcome and engage children (and adults!) in worship as full members of the body of Christ. At the beginning of this session hear from the coauthor and illustrator of the new children’s book En la escuela de los Salmos/At Psalms School.

Cancer Screening For Transgender Patients: An Online Case-Based Module, Devin Oller
Cancer Screening For Transgender Patients: An Online Case-Based Module, Devin Oller
Internal Medicine Faculty Publications
Introduction: Guidelines recommend that primary care providers complete organ-based routine cancer screening for all transgender patients. Training on critical transgender health topics like cancer screening, as well as residents' confidence in addressing issues their transgender patients may face, remains limited among graduate medical education (GME) programs. Online case-based modules are an effective tool for skills improvement in GME, but their application to transgender health topics has not been assessed.
Methods: I developed a brief online module on cancer screening for transgender patients using Google Forms and offered it to first-year internal medicine residents. The module was optional and asynchronous with …

An Interdisciplinary Discourse Between Dewey And Self-Determination Theory: Motivation In The Wake Of Monetizing Education, Jacqueline A. Goldman, Benjamin C. Heddy, Susan Laird
An Interdisciplinary Discourse Between Dewey And Self-Determination Theory: Motivation In The Wake Of Monetizing Education, Jacqueline A. Goldman, Benjamin C. Heddy, Susan Laird
Education and Culture
The purpose of this theoretical exposition is to bring two fields into discussion concerning the issue of motivation, in the new monetized context of education, through an encounter between John Dewey and self-determination theory. Using Dewey's Experience and Education as well as self-determination theory's most fundamental scholarship (e.g., Ryan and Deci 2000), we offer a contemporary parallel with Dewey's thoughts on "New" and "Old" education and examine it through the lens of self-determination theory. This interdisciplinary perspective combines educational psychology with philosophy of education to retheorize motivation as a critical response to the "New" educational shift toward monetization, which we …
Creative Integration And Pragmatist Optimism: Dispositions For “The Task Before Us”, Barbara S. Stengel
Creative Integration And Pragmatist Optimism: Dispositions For “The Task Before Us”, Barbara S. Stengel
Education and Culture
How can and will educators in any setting work with young people of all ages to enable them to develop the ability to interrogate—without denigrating—the claims of candidates, the newsmaking of media, the needs of their neighbors, and the fears of their family members? The answer I offer and defend here involves two dispositions—creative integration and pragmatist optimism—that I view as critical to the pursuit of vibrant and viable political democracy. These dispositions are, I argue, necessary to and evidence of the very possibility of a polity worthy of the "democratic" label.

Conflict Zone, Comfort Zone : Ethics, Pedagogy, And Effecting Change In Field-Based Courses, Agnieszka Paczyńska, Susan F. Hirsch
Ohio University Press Open Access Books
By taking students out of their comfort zone, field-based courses—which are increasingly popular in secondary and postsecondary education—have the potential to be deep, transformative learning experiences. But what happens when the field in question is a site of active or recent conflict? In Conflict Zone, Comfort Zone, editors Agnieszka Paczyńska and Susan F. Hirsch highlight new approaches to field-based learning in conflict zones worldwide. As the contributors demonstrate, instructors must leave the comfort zone of traditional pedagogy to meet the challenges of field-based education.
Drawing on case studies in the United States and abroad, the contributors address the ethical considerations …

Untethered Lecture Capture: A Qualitative Investigation Of College Student Experiences, Lorretta Krautscheid, Samuel Williams, Benjamin Kahn, Katherine Adams
Faculty Publications - College of Nursing
Untethered Lecture Capture (ULC), a technology-enhanced teaching strategy, permits faculty to be freely mobile in the classroom (untethered) while simultaneously teaching and creating audiovisual media assets (lecture capture). Faculty, representing nine disciplines, implemented ULC in undergraduate courses. Qualitative content analysis resulted in three themes. Undergraduate participants (n¼23) reported ULC supports accessibility and education affordances, enhancing personalized, self-paced learning, and equal opportunities for academic success. Untethered faculty teach on our turf, teaching among rather than talking at students, enhancing time-on-task, in-class focus, and learner socialization. Understanding and retention were perceived as improved when multimedia instruction principles were integrated in the classroom.

In recent years, there appears to be an increase in the number of children in grades kindergarten through 12th grade that struggle with issues such as mental illness, anxiety, emotional and behavioral disorders, etc. As a result, teachers are starting to witness more student behaviors in the classroom. Consequently, this impacts the learning environment of all students. Currently, there is a growing trend in the field of mindfulness. Mindfulness interventions have been suggested to help students with behavior regulation, academic performance, and prosocial behaviors. Research also suggests that mindfulness interventions are not only beneficial for students but teachers too. They …

The Merit Of The Practical And Abstract Within Art Education, Nikolas Kahl
Undergraduate Honors College Theses 2016-
Throughout the development of art education within the United States, there has been a constant struggle for the arts to prove itself valuable enough to merit its teaching in public schools. To address this, art educators and political officials alike have made major changes in art education methodology over time. The wide spectrum of changes that art education has undertaken since its inception can essentially be labeled as those that are meant to make art education standards based, and those that are meant to make art education expression oriented. Due to the consistent need for validation demanded by public funding …
