Implementation And Assessment Of A New Program Requirement To Promote Professional Development, Christina Davlin-Pater, Elisabeth Rosencrum

Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice

Purpose: Requiring students to complete and record professional development type activities similar to the requirements of certified athletic trainers may help promote the values and behaviors associated with life-long learning in the evolving practice of athletic training, as well as prepare students more practically for the expectations of credential maintenance. We sought to design, implement, assess, and improve a new professional development program requirement in a professional-level athletic training program that closely mirrored the process and re-certification requirements for certified athletic trainers. Methods: a quasi-experimental mixed-methods approach was used. Data were collected over two consecutive years at a private …

Academia’S Role To Drive Change In The Orthotics And Prosthetics Profession, Géza F. Kogler, Christopher F. Hovorka

ETSU Faculty Works

This position paper outlines the important role of academia in shaping the orthotics and prosthetics (O&P) profession and preparing for its future. In the United States, most healthcare professions including O&P are under intense pressure to provide cost effective treatments and quantifiable health outcomes. Pivotal changes are needed in the way O&P services are provided to remain competitive. This will require the integration of new technologies and data driven processes that have the potential to streamline workflows, reduce errors and inform new methods of clinical care and device manufacturing. Academia can lead this change, starting with a restructuring in academic …

Antecedents To Self-Perceived White Privilege And Organizational Citizenship Behaviors, Anthony Micale Jan 2021

Antecedents To Self-Perceived White Privilege And Organizational Citizenship Behaviors, Anthony Micale

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

White privilege in organizational settings often gives White employees an undeserved edge over employees of color. The current study functioned to determine the precursors to self-awareness of one’s White privilege, specifically focusing on participants’ multicultural experiences as well as personal and parental education levels. Increased self-awareness of White privilege was also suspected to increase the frequency of engagement in organizational citizenship behaviors (OCBs). Finally, White privilege attitudes were hypothesized to mediate the relationship between multicultural experience and OCBs. White participants (N = 98) were asked to complete an online questionnaire designed to assess multicultural experience, self-perceptions of White privilege, and …

Special Education No Man's Land, Adrián E. Alvarez

St. John's Law Review

(Excerpt)

Since 2014, unaccompanied immigrant children have migrated to the United States in staggering numbers. The vast majority come from the Northern Triangle countries of Central America—El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras—and many are fleeing some of the highest homicide rates in the world. Immigration lawyers have highlighted many problems with the federal regime that cares for these children before they are released to family members or other adults living in the United States while their immigration cases move forward. Yet there is one group of unaccompanied minors that is not even on the radar of many advocates: unaccompanied children with …

Natural User Interface Based American Sign Language Tutoring Program, Bryce J. Allen

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

The COVID-19 pandemic has exposed a substantial shortcoming in the modern American educational system: there is a sufficient need for our educators to be trained in the practices required to provide an educational experience for their students that is as effective as in-person instruction. There exist already systems of online instruction for various academic subjects, such as math and the sciences. In the subject of linguistic studies, educational programs have been developed to evaluate student proficiency in both the written and spoken forms of the language in which they are studying. However, there exist few programs that can effectively provide …

Improving Student Attitudes Towards Stem Education By Building Self-Efficacy Through Robotics Education, Kevin Obillo Jan 2021

Improving Student Attitudes Towards Stem Education By Building Self-Efficacy Through Robotics Education, Kevin Obillo

Theses and Dissertations

The United States must grow its science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) trained workforce in order to fill the jobs projected to be in demand. One of the ways in which this can be done is to tap into the vast population of minorities and women who are underrepresented in the STEM fields. The United States has been looking for ways to improve STEM participation in these groups for many years now, through outreach, legislation and innovative academic programs. The purpose of this research was to examine the impact that a robotics education enrichment program had on elementary, predominantly Latinx …

Addressing The Needs Of Individuals With Upper Limb Loss/Difference(S) (Ull/D) Through Expansion Of A Virtual Support Group To Include Intimate Relationships, Samantha A. Pagano Jan 2021

Addressing The Needs Of Individuals With Upper Limb Loss/Difference(S) (Ull/D) Through Expansion Of A Virtual Support Group To Include Intimate Relationships, Samantha A. Pagano

OTD DEx Reports - College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences

"Individuals with upper limb loss/difference(s) (ULL/D) are typically outnumbered by individuals with lower limb loss by a 1:4 ratio (Latour, 2019). This often results in a lack of access to resources, especially those related to secondary physical and psychosocial conditions. In order to better address the gap in resources experienced by the UL L/D population, five Doctor of Occupational Therapy students at Western New England University expanded a virtual support group for individuals with UL L/D, originally piloted by Debra Latour, PP-OTD, M. Ed., OTR/L, as part of their Doctoral Experiential Capstone Project. The program, titled Unlimbited Wellness, aimed to …

The Bottom Line: Law School Need To Get Serious About The Work Of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion, Lisa Sonia Taylor, Belinda Dantley

Research Reports & White Papers

North American law schools are adding Diversity, Equity, and inclusion (DEI) roles or responsibilities at an increasing pace. In early 2021 we surveyed DEI professionals at law schools across the country. We agree interested in finding out more about these professionals, their work, and their perceptions about the role they play at their law school.

We took the opportunity to ask DEI professionals about their role in light of the global pandemic and focus on racial injustice after the protests against police violence in the summer of 2020.
