Humanist But Not Radical: The Educational Philosophy Of Thiruvalluvar Kural, Devin K. Joshi Mar 2021

Humanist But Not Radical: The Educational Philosophy Of Thiruvalluvar Kural, Devin K. Joshi

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Humanist ideas in education have been promoted by both Western thinkers and classical wisdom texts of Asia. Exploring this connection, I examine the educational philosophy of an iconic ancient Tamil (Indian) text, the Thiruvalluvar Kural, by juxtaposing it with a contemporary humanist classic, Paulo Freire’s Pedagogy of the Oppressed. As this comparative study reveals, both texts offer humanist visions of relevance to education, politics, and society. Notably, however, the Kural takes what might be described as a more mainstream humanist stance vis-à-vis Freire’s radical humanist approach. Nevertheless, both educational philosophies share a common humanist bond representing important breakthroughs within their …

From Women’S Learning (Fuxue) To Gender Studies: Feminist Challenges To Modern Confucianism, Sor-Hoon Tan Mar 2021

From Women’S Learning (Fuxue) To Gender Studies: Feminist Challenges To Modern Confucianism, Sor-Hoon Tan

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

The promotion of Confucianism to offer solutions to contemporary problems, better alternatives to the patently unsatisfactory status quo of our world and the tired ideals that have dominated academic and global discourses, should not be mistaken for naïve traditionalism advocating the revival of Confucianism as it was understood and practiced in its historical milieu. This is especially pertinent in the area of gender relations. Chenyang Li pointed out nearly two decades ago: as “the philosophical-religious tradition that originated in Confucius and was further developed by scholars and supporters of later times … there is little doubt that the answer to …

Educating Church Leaders: Providing End-Of-Life Spiritual Care To Life Changers Church Ministry, Jermaine Joshua Ruffin Mar 2021

Educating Church Leaders: Providing End-Of-Life Spiritual Care To Life Changers Church Ministry, Jermaine Joshua Ruffin

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Life Changers Community Fellowship Church, of Jackson, Mississippi, struggles to provide end-of-life spiritual care to its members. Its church leadership has placed the responsibility of providing end-of-life spiritual care on institutions such as hospice and palliative care companies. These organizations do their best to provide end-of-life spiritual care, but struggle due to cultural and ethnical boundaries, and a lack of resources to provide such care. This study seeks to examine whether end-of-life spiritual care is a biblical concern and/or mandate within church leadership. In addition, this study will explore how hospice chaplains understand end-of-life spiritual care provided to patients and …

A Novel Approach To Teaching Hidden Markov Models To A Diverse Undergraduate Population, Philip Heller, Pratyusha Pogaru Mar 2021

A Novel Approach To Teaching Hidden Markov Models To A Diverse Undergraduate Population, Philip Heller, Pratyusha Pogaru

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Hidden Markov Models (HMMs) are an essential tool for Bioinformatic analysis, with extensive success at finding patterns (e.g. CRISPR arrays or genes of interest) in DNA or protein sequences. HMMs are conceptually intricate, and the algorithms that make use of them are complicated. Thus they present a challenge to Bioinformatics instructors at the undergraduate level, particularly when the students’ educational backgrounds are broadly diverse. At San Jose State University, many undergraduate Bioinformatics students are Biology majors with little or no prior coursework in mathematics, statistics, or programming. For this population a theory-based approach to teaching HMMs would be ineffective. To …

Developing International Guidelines For Protecting Schools And Universities From Military Use During Armed Conflict, Steven Haines Feb 2021

Developing International Guidelines For Protecting Schools And Universities From Military Use During Armed Conflict, Steven Haines

International Law Studies

One consequence of armed conflict, especially that of a non-international character, is serious damage done to vital societal infrastructure. Education–schools and universities–can be severely disrupted, even subject to attack. Targeting of schools may not invariably be unlawful if educational facilities are being put to military use. Such use may itself not be unlawful but it can result in schools being transformed from civilian objects into military objectives–and subject, therefore, to lawful targeting. This was a problem highlighted by humanitarian NGOs a decade ago and led to the formation, by both NGOs and United Nations agencies, of the Global Coalition to …

Girls' Education Roadmap: 2021 Report Summary, Stephanie Psaki, Nicole Haberland, Meredith L. Kozak, Lauren Woyczynski

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

While insufficient to meet the vast needs, billions of dollars are being invested in girls’ education advocacy, program, and policy solutions around the world. At the same time, hundreds of millions are invested in research about what works in education. And yet, the policies and approaches that are pursued often don’t line up with what researchers find is effective. The result is that governments, international organizations, and NGOs are too often investing scarce resources in policies or interventions without knowing whether they work. As noted in this report summary, the Girls’ Education Roadmap shares insights derived from data in the …

A Barrier Or Conduit? Analyzing The Perception Of Support Services In Higher Education On The Academic Persistence Of Black Male Students, Laquan Dyce Feb 2021

A Barrier Or Conduit? Analyzing The Perception Of Support Services In Higher Education On The Academic Persistence Of Black Male Students, Laquan Dyce

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

This study aimed to illuminate the perceptions of whether higher education support services function as a barrier or conduit to Black male undergraduate students’ academic persistence. The relationship between 13 Black male undergraduate students and their higher education institutions were examined. The researcher proposed a model of qualitative exploratory methodology. This study was motivated by three research questions: (1) What resources are instrumental in helping Black males persist academically? (2) How do Black male students navigate and make sense of institutional support for their academic persistence? and (3) In what ways do Black male students perceive the quality of the …

E Noelo I Ka ‘Ike - To Search For Knowledge, Rae-Anne Montague, Keikilani Meyer, Kuuleilani Reyes

Journal of Indigenous Research

E Noelo I Ka ‘Ike (To Search for Knowledge) is an educational project developed to increase understanding, research skills, and use of Hawaiian culture and language materials. In recent years, several databases and digital collections featuring indigenous content have been launched, but there is a disconnect with Native Hawaiian students and community members not being aware of these resources, and, as a result, not accessing them. E Noelo I Ka ‘Ike was implemented to begin to address this gap and create new connections by fostering critical conversations, providing culturally-grounded information literacy workshops, and offering complementary field trips to local libraries …

Democratizing Education Rights, Joshua E. Weishart Feb 2021

Democratizing Education Rights, Joshua E. Weishart

William & Mary Bill of Rights Journal

If the United States is to reverse its creeping, illiberal descent, generations of youth must emerge from this tribal, post-truth, pandemic-shattered era to mend democracy. Hope for that uncertain future lies in re-engineering how schoolchildren learn democracy-- not from a civics textbook but by experiencing it in the classroom. The sad irony is that we still lack a knowledge base, grounded in research, for that type of democratic education. Nearly two and a half centuries into the republic's existence, our commitment to democratic education is honored more in the breach than in observance. And our uninformed, polarized, and disaffected electorate …

A History Of Māori Literacy Success, Melissa Derby Feb 2021

A History Of Māori Literacy Success, Melissa Derby

Journal of Indigenous Research

This article explores literacy in 19th century Māori society, and in particular, this work considers the initial interactions Māori tribal groups had with literacy following contact with British settlers. The overarching purpose of this article is to respond to the increasingly prevalent suggestion that literacy is a Western competency, and that to be concerned with ensuring Māori children are achieving well in reading and writing is an act of colonisation. This work illustrates that these narratives run counter to the history, behaviour, and values of many tribal groups in New Zealand. More specifically, the historical interactions Māori had with …

Education And Anti-Semitism, Jay. P. Greene, Albert Cheng, Ian Kingsbury Feb 2021

Education And Anti-Semitism, Jay. P. Greene, Albert Cheng, Ian Kingsbury

Education Reform Faculty and Graduate Students Publications

Many people believe that intolerance, in general, and anti-Semitism, in particular, are a function of ignorance, and the solution is education. We see evidence of this whenever concerns about intolerance or anti-Semitism become more salient. Proposed solutions frequently feature improved Holocaust education or expanded diversity, equity, and inclusion training. As two religious leaders recently urged, “The only thing that will truly halt the rise of anti-Semitism in America is education” (Stanton & Marcus, 2019). Profiles of anti-Semites tend to feature rural whites or urban minorities, but they are almost always from low-educational backgrounds. Well-educated people tend to feel secure in …

Penal Measures Against Plagiarism In The Digital Environment, ٍSafaa Otani Feb 2021

Penal Measures Against Plagiarism In The Digital Environment, ٍSafaa Otani

UAEU Law Journal

The digital revolution has been a double-edged sword in the Education sector. As much as it had an enormously positive impact on both education and scientific research, including the provision of new types of education like computer-aided instruction and online courses, it has become a source of real abuse by both students and members of academic staff. Students and Staff ‘ease of access to the digital world has lured some of them to steal others people publications, such as research papers, scientific reports and theses, and attribute them to themselves. This has caused rise to a new phenomena: “Plagiarism in …

Revisiting The Role Of Education In Global Society: Relevance Of The Concept Of "Value Generalization" In An Educational Context, Matteo Tracchi Feb 2021

Revisiting The Role Of Education In Global Society: Relevance Of The Concept Of "Value Generalization" In An Educational Context, Matteo Tracchi

Societies Without Borders

Interpreting global society through the morphogenetic approach, the article looks at education as one of the dimensions of social change brought about by the plural process of globalization. The role and vision of education will therefore be questioned to finally claim that education has to be revisited in culturally diverse and complex global societies. Necessary steps include moving from a market- to a human-centred approach to education and taking the paradigm of human rights as the universal point of departure. Indeed, framing the concept of “value generalization” (Joas, 2013) within an educational context, the paper argues that human rights …

Are (Juvenile) Prisons Obsolete?: The ‘American’ Criminalization Of Our Youth, Sophia S. Aimé Feb 2021

Are (Juvenile) Prisons Obsolete?: The ‘American’ Criminalization Of Our Youth, Sophia S. Aimé

Tapestries: Interwoven voices of local and global identities

Using historical and societal analysis of juvenile justice and exploring the significant relationship between the education and justice system, this article provides an extensive critique and analysis of ‘juvenile delinquency’ according to Western/American ideals and how marginalized Black youth are viewed in the juvenile justice system. Is incarceration even necessary to rehabilitate our youth? This article also provides solutions to the systemic issue by proposing and developing research for a social and emotional learning (SEL) based program hosted in Miami that caters to the academic and pro-social skills and overall well being of the youth.

Covid-19 And Its Implications On Students’ Learning Behaviour, Ashu Taneja, Ishwar Dutt Feb 2021

Covid-19 And Its Implications On Students’ Learning Behaviour, Ashu Taneja, Ishwar Dutt

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Due to the outbreak of COVID-19, the educational institutions in India suddenly switched to online mode of teaching. This new learning mode gives the flexibility to connect at any time from any place. This sudden shift has impacted the learning behaviour of students to a large extent, which is studied and analysed in this paper for a computer programming course. An online questionnaire is prepared and circulated among the students for which 158 responses were received. Based on the responses, it is found out from the analysis that 75.32% of students favour learning this course in offline mode while 48.1% …
