The Impact Of School Resource Officers On The Education Of Youth In Arkansas, Pamela Shultz Henderson

Student Theses and Dissertations

Over the past several decades there has been an increase in school shootings across the nation. In response, School Resource Officer programs have been created in addition to increased security measures. It is believed that the increase of police officers in schools has funneled students into the criminal justice system, through what is called the school-to-prison pipeline. The purpose of the study was to examine the perceptions of stakeholders of the impact School Resource Officers have on the education of youth in Arkansas. Both quantitative and qualitative methods were used to explore the perceptions of School Resource Officers, law enforcement …

A Research Agenda For (Gender) Troubled Times: Striving For A Better Tomorrow, Catherine Coleman, Eileen Fischer, Linda Tuncay Zayer

School of Business: Faculty Publications and Other Works

As we gathered on Zoom to begin this editorial, a typical COVID-19 experience unfolded. Working from our living rooms, kitchens, or closets (Eileen) we checked in as to how each of us was coping, knowing that we were navigating multiple responsibilities and uncertainties. Having assured ourselves that we were all “fine, really, okay,” we proceeded to get down to work, only to have Linda’s kids start vying for her attention because—of course—she’s not just trying to write an editorial, she’s also overseeing the online learning they are supposed to be doing. If we needed it, our shared experience was living …

Advocating For Palliative Care In The Intensive Care Unit: A Nursing Approach, Andrea Kirk, Erin Leach

Nursing DNP Projects

Purpose and Rational

Intensive Care Unit (ICU) patients often receive aggressive medical treatment with advanced illness or injury, and frequently have unmet palliative care (PC) needs. ICU nurses bear witness to the suffering of their patients and in turn, suffer a disproportionate amount of moral distress. The purpose of this clinical scholarship project is to empower nurses with knowledge and skills to advocate for PC for critically ill patients within the ICU setting at a Midwestern, urban, academic medical center. This will be achieved by providing education to nurses about PC and its utilization in the ICU setting and implementing …

The Adolescent Girls Initiative–Kenya is a study that evaluates the long-term impact of a multisectoral intervention targeted at adolescent girls aged 11 to 15 years from Kibera and rural Wajir. The intervention consists of four components: a community-based violence-prevention program, an education conditional cash transfer (CCT), health-focused girls-empowerment clubs, and wealth creation for girls via financial education and savings. A random selection of 6,000 girls were exposed to different components of the intervention. Key results, noted in this brief, are: conditional cash transfers are a key driver of improvement in education outcomes, and of delaying sexual debut and pregnancy in …

The Adolescent Girls Initiative-Kenya—Executive Summary: Two-Year Follow Up Results, Population Council

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

In Kenya, early pregnancy is a challenge for girls that often has immediate effects on their educational opportunities, future implications for their social, health, and economic outcomes, and immediate and ongoing negative impacts on their children. Early pregnancy is an outcome shaped by a myriad of issues affecting an adolescent girl’s life—including community norms on gender roles, violence, and the social value of girls; barriers to formal education; household poverty; lack of economic independence; experience of violence; and social isolation. For girls to achieve well-being in early and late adolescence, no single-sector intervention—whether it be education, health, wealth creation, or …

Background

Hearing loss affects access to spoken language, which can affect cognition and development, and can negatively affect social wellbeing. We present updated estimates from the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) study on the prevalence of hearing loss in 2019, as well as the condition's associated disability.

Methods

We did systematic reviews of population-representative surveys on hearing loss prevalence from 1990 to 2019. We fitted nested meta-regression models for severity-specific prevalence, accounting for hearing aid coverage, cause, and the presence of tinnitus. We also forecasted the prevalence of hearing loss until 2050.

Findings

An estimated 1.57 billion (95% uncertainty interval …

A review of related literature for this paper includes an early perspective of online education, emergent trends, methods used to support educators and learners and a summary of best practices and opportunities for educators. Transitioning courses from on-ground to online education requires a student-centered approach, a clear understanding of the objectives, and a plan to address each of the learning goals. For 20+ years in Savannah, Georgia, Parent University has successfully enhanced the ability of families to create an environment in which learning thrives for both children and parents. When the pandemic closed schools and disrupted normal programming, Parent University immediately pivoted to online programming to continue connecting families with relevant education, resources and support throughout this time of need. The Current State Of Communicative-Speech Culture And Competence Of Future Teachers, Hamid Sodikov

Mental Enlightenment Scientific-Methodological Journal

The study of the current state of communicative-speech culture and competence of future teachers is an invaluable sign of the existing language of each nation - the identity of this nation. In this sense, the communicative-speech culture implies changes in the motivational sphere, the psyche of the teacher, which leads to the reconstruction of the whole structure of activity. Therefore, it is necessary to form the professional competence of the teacher, but this alone is not enough. The Perceptions Of Rural Teachers Engaged In Environmental Education Professional Development Workshops: A Case Study Of The Alder Creek Community Forest And The Story Of Your Place, Bryan R. Benz

Dissertations and Theses

Environmental issues can be difficult for people to understand and for teachers to address in their classrooms. Issues such as climate change and ozone depletion are difficult to comprehend and present a challenge for most people to understand thoroughly the complexity of these environmental challenges. Professional development programs could provide the tools for teachers to improve their environmental literacy and a pathway for learning new methods for engaging their students. However, in rural Oregon, where professional development opportunities are scarce, teachers rely on a lean supply of organizations to provide these experiences. Alder Creek Community Forest, a nonprofit organization, provides …

Baldy Center Blog

When you hear the word "homeless," what exactly comes to mind? Most times, the term immediately conjures up an image of a single adult sleeping under a bridge, in a park, or a car. In fact, very few fully understand the growing crisis of homeless youth. There is a significant body of research on educational outcomes for children and youth who experience homelessness and on outcomes for youth in foster care, yet little research that focuses on youth who have experienced all of these challenges. A study conducted by three Baldy Center research grant recipients, Annahita Ball, Elizabeth Bowen, and …
