Medical Schools Ignore The Nature Of Consciousness At Great Cost, Anoop Kumar
Medical Schools Ignore The Nature Of Consciousness At Great Cost, Anoop Kumar
Journal of Wellness
The essential question of the relationship between consciousness and matter is ignored in medical school curricula, leading to a machine-like view of the human being that contributes to physician burnout and intellectual dissatisfaction. The evidence suggesting that the brain may not be the seat of consciousness is generally ignored to preserve the worldview of the primacy of matter. By investigating new frameworks detailing the nature of consciousness at different levels of hierarchy, we can bring intellectual rigor to a once opaque subject that supports a fundamental reality about our experience: We are human beings, not only human bodies.

The Effects Of Race, Ethnicity, Education, Marital Status, And Family Size On Hysterectomy Rates, Zula Price
Dissertations
Decreasing disparities in hysterectomy rates have been a goal of the United States Department of Health and Human Services as a method of improving women's health. In the United States, hysterectomy rates remain high, particularly among Black women in contrast to other racial and ethnic groups (Qi et al., 2013). This study, using a descriptive research framework, utilized a sample of 1,921 women across the United States who participated in the 2012 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES).
Data were analyzed from the responses of subjects who reported having a hysterectomy in the 2012 NHANES, which is designed to …

There were four males and three females with ages ranging from 22 – 41 (M = 27.57 and SD = 6.63) …
Black And White Health Disparities: Racial Bias In American Healthcare, Yasmeen Almomani
Black And White Health Disparities: Racial Bias In American Healthcare, Yasmeen Almomani
Bridges: An Undergraduate Journal of Contemporary Connections
This paper explores the historical implications of race in American society that have led to implicit racism in the healthcare system. Racial bias in healthcare against Black people is a factor in the health disparities between Black and white people in America, such as the gap in life expectancy, infant death, and maternal mortality. Black people are more likely to report racial discrimination from healthcare providers, which is a reason for the decreased quality of care received. The past justifications of slavery, the Tuskegee syphilis study, and the medical experimentations on Black women are horrifying but were considered acceptable in …

Black Lips Don't Turn Blue: A Womanist Critique Of Discriminatory Language In Medical Education, Alison Lawrence
Black Lips Don't Turn Blue: A Womanist Critique Of Discriminatory Language In Medical Education, Alison Lawrence
Womanist Ethics
This paper examines race and gender inequities in healthcare as it pertains to the unequal presentation of descriptors of illness in medical textbooks. The author adopts a womanist perspective to criticize the use of the white male body as the standard for all patients, which causes signs and symptoms in women and people of color to be dismissed as less important. Following an analysis of normalizing language in current medical texts as well as its consequences for patients, the author calls for a system-wide shift to more inclusive, intersectional medical education that not only acknowledges differences among patient groups, but …

Developmentally Supportive Positioning In The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit., Taylor Morganti
Developmentally Supportive Positioning In The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit., Taylor Morganti
Doctor of Nursing Practice Papers
Background: An estimated 15 million infants worldwide are born prematurely each year. These infants are at an increased risk of poor physical and neurodevelopment because of increased stress and inappropriate sensory stimuli experienced in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). The provision of developmentally supportive care can mitigate some of these noxious effects. By decreasing stress and conserving energy, developmentally supportive positioning can enhance sensory, motor, and neurodevelopment. Purpose: The purpose of this quality improvement project is to improve the positioning of premature neonates through an educational intervention and staff training on the importance of developmentally supportive positioning. Improved positioning …
The Implementation Of A Standardized Car Safety Seat Discharge Teaching To Improve Self-Efficacy In Neonatal Intensive Care Unit Nurses., Madeline Sass
Doctor of Nursing Practice Papers
Background: There is a lack of standardization for car safety seat education to caregivers before hospital discharge. Nationally, 59% of motor vehicle accident deaths occur because the car seat is misused (Greenwall, 2015). The American Academy of Pediatrics (1999) states this is a gap in care because all caregivers need to receive proper car safety seat instruction before discharge. Purpose: This quality improvement project aimed to increase nursing self-efficacy and compliance of registered nurses (RNs) by implementing a standardized CSS discharge intervention. Methods: RNs on the unit were educated with a 7-minute presentation video titled “Car Seat Safety: Discharge Teaching” …

A New Heuristic Algorithm For Accuracy And Computational Efficiency For Solving Minimum Cost Flow Problems, Timothy Michael Chávez
Computational Modeling & Simulation Engineering Theses & Dissertations
While the minimum cost flow (MCF) problems have been well documented in many publications, due to its broad applications, little or no effort has been devoted to explaining the algorithms for identifying loop formation and computing the θ value needed to solve MCF network problems. This paper proposes efficient numerical procedures and MATLAB computer implementation for computing the θ value. Furthermore, this paper also proposes a mixed heuristic, shortest path (SP) Chavez-Nguyen (or Chayen) Algorithm in Phase 1 (to obtain the basic feasible solution) and, either the conventional MCF or MATLAB’s built-in Linprog() function, in Phase 2 (to obtain the …

Religious Educator: Perspectives on the Restored Gospel
While teaching an instructional design course, I would often begin the semester by asking students to define the word learning. On the surface, that seems like a relatively simple task, but most students struggled to craft a definition that satisfied them. We would then explore scholarly definitions of the word, often with equally unsatisfying results. Scholars in the fields of education and psychology usually focus on three primary aspects of the word learning: (1) the acquisition of new knowledge or a new skill (2) that persists over time and (3) is not due only to growth and development.

The Forum: Journal of History
This article explores American colonial education in Micronesia from the final months of World War Two to the late 1970s. The primary research question concerns American usage of education to pursue political and military goals, and how this affected multiple dimensions of Indigenous life. Although the dominant narrative at the time blamed Indigenous people for difficulties in implementing American education, the Western values permeating the American consciousness significantly inhibited the possibility of success as Americans defined it. This article details American motivations and efforts to implement an educational system as part of a larger goal of “economic development” and analyzes …
