How Does Psychosocial Safety Climate Affect Burnout Among Malaysian Educators During The Covid-19 Pandemic?, Kok Ban Teoh, Daisy Mui Hung Kee, Nadeem Akhtar

Asia-Pacific Social Science Review

Nowadays, the COVID-19 pandemic has led Malaysian educators to experience more significant burnout due to job demands. This paper is an effort to examine the reasons that caused burnout among Malaysian educators. A total of 413 Malaysian educators participated in the study. This study’s findings revealed that PSC has a significant negative relationship with hindrance demands and burnout, whereas both challenge and hindrance demands have insignificant positive relationships with burnout. Furthermore, the study showed that two variables—challenge demands and hindrance demands—played significant mediators in the relationship between PSC and burnout. As a result, it is concluded that PSC can reduce …

Conatus, The Will To Persist: An Introduction, Jasmin Özel, Nikos Psarros Dec 2021

Conatus, The Will To Persist: An Introduction, Jasmin Özel, Nikos Psarros

Philosophy Faculty Research

The papers collected in this issue address a variety of aspects of the concept of conatus ranging from the explorations of its roots in early ancient Greek thought to its application on modern theories of democratic education. The conatus is a special relation between the parts of a monad and their subparts and the subparts of the subparts to infinity, which ensures that each part and subpart is a part of this monad and not of any other. As a fundamental trait of monadic existence, the conatus is manifested in a multiplicity of facets that sustain the persistence of any …

A New Conatus For The New World: Dewey’S Response To Perfectionist Conceptions Of Democratic Education, Jasmin Özel, Dave Beisecker, Joe Ervin

Philosophy Faculty Research

We argue for a reconsideration of the claim that Spinoza’s perfectionist conception of education was ushering in a form of radical humanism distinctly favorable to democratic ideals. With the rise of democratic societies and the corresponding need to constitute educational institutions within those societies, a more thoroughgoing commitment to democratic social ideals arose, first and foremost in American educational thought. This commitment can be seen especially in Dewey’s philosophy of education. Specifically, Dewey and Spinoza had strikingly distinct conceptions of the overall aims of schooling. While Spinoza takes the aim of education to be the perfection of a student’s original …

Assessing The Educational Quality Of Training Videos For Collection Of A Nasopharyngeal Swab, Evan M. Ryan, Matthew T. Solverson, Dallin N. Christensen, Kristy J. Carlson, Kaeli K. Samson, Samuel K. Pate, Jayme R. Dowdall, Christie A. Barnes

Graduate Medical Education Research Journal

Introduction: The SARS-CoV-2 pandemic has forced healthcare systems to disseminate their training materials quickly and broadly, including instruction on identifying cases of infection through correct nasopharyngeal swabbing. Incorrect nasopharyngeal swabbing technique leads to substandard sampling, patient discomfort, and increased risk of complications. We set out to evaluate the quality of educational videos on the nasopharyngeal swab procedure.

Methods: Using video search engines, videos on nasopharyngeal swabbing were identified and distributed to two reviewers. The quality of videos was assessed using a scoring system that examined indications, contraindications, personal protective equipment use, swab depth, swab angle, and audiovisual quality. Descriptive statistics …

School Social Workers In Texas, Kayce Stevens Dec 2021

School Social Workers In Texas, Kayce Stevens

Capstones

School social workers in Texas are underfunded, under-appreciated, and overworked. I spent 18 months interviewing and getting to know school social workers across Texas to find out what their needs were. The main concerns I learned where: not many people know what school social workers do and that limits the resources they can provide, and there are not enough social workers in the schools across Texas which makes their workload unmanageable. I created one-pagers to distribute during the Texas legislative session on why the Texas Education Code should require all schools to provide social services. I also created a chatbot …

Public Educators Shaking Up Classrooms, Elizabeth Richards Dec 2021

Public Educators Shaking Up Classrooms, Elizabeth Richards

Capstones

Through feedback from the community, largely in the form of continued interviews and conversations with teachers about what they were looking for and how they consumed news, I learned that a newsletter was the best way to reach them.

Navigating the challenges of hybrid learning has meant for teachers multiple lesson planning, which has compounded the existing challenge of being incredibly busy and potentially overwhelmed. A newsletter that could arrive in an email inbox — a place where public teachers spend much of their time — could help bring information directly and prevent teachers from having to spend more time …

Reducing Postpartum Maternal Falls: A Quality Improvement Project, Sarah L. Iroz

Master's Projects and Capstones

Falls are an unfortunate, common occurrence in the healthcare system and are often not thought to be a problem in the obstetrics population. Key stakeholders in a Northern California hospital brought the issue of maternal falls to leaders of the quality improvement team on the maternity unit. In the last three years, there have been 23 falls on the maternity floor, making their fall rate above the national average. It is the purpose of this project to aid the quality improvement team in reducing postpartum maternal falls over the next three years. After conducting a unit assessment, performing a literature …

Increasing Low-Dose Ct Screening In Primary Care, Bethany Huelskoetter

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Abstract

Lung cancer was ranked as the second most common cancer diagnosed in 2020 and had the highest death rate compared to all other cancers, excluding nonmelanoma skin cancers (ACS). A low dose CT (LDCT) is a yearly screening tool developed to detect lung cancer early in high-risk patients yet is much underutilized in primary care. The purpose of this project is to increase the number of LDCT orders placed for qualified patients to decrease the lung cancer mortality rate. There were two main methods for this project: education …

Targeting Nstemi Readmissions: Education To Protect The Hearts Of Our Patients, Gisha Gireesan

Master's Projects and Capstones

Section I: Abstract

Problem: January and February 2021 data showed a rise in readmissions for the NSTEMI population. This is significant as 2020 had a readmission rate of 5.6% and 7.3% in 2019. This sudden increase in readmissions within the first two months of the year is a cause for concern and immediate action is needed.

Context: 2020 had a reduction in cardiac catheterizations due to the multiple canceled cases during the COVID 19 pandemic. As the cases were being rescheduled along with new cases in 2021, the institution experienced an uptake in readmissions.

Establishing Quiet Hours In Long-Term Care: A Quality Improvement Project, Heather Battaglia

Master's Projects and Capstones

Designated quiet hours have been shown to improve patient sleep as well as decrease stress levels in nurses.

Context: In a skilled nursing facility that provides care for military veterans with complex medical and psychosocial needs, signage exists that indicates to be quiet between 10:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m., but no defined guidelines were available for staff to observe.

Interventions: Standards for quiet hours were established and posted throughout the microsystem. Lecture-style teaching …

America's Homeschool Lobby, Harrison Parker

Capstones

An NYC News Service examination of public filings and other documents shows the HSLDA and its state allies, while pushing to increase homeschooling, simultaneously pushes for legislative changes that have seemingly nothing to do with homeschooling -- in the past year alone, it has been fighting vaccination requirements, opposing a national child abuse registry and limiting the ability of children to get medical treatment.

This book targets children aged seven to ten and explains the benefit to believing in an afterlife. It explores different ideas surrounding the afterlife and …
