The Rural Cemetery Movement: The Origins Of Cemeteries Like Yours, Jeffrey Smith Feb 2022

The Rural Cemetery Movement: The Origins Of Cemeteries Like Yours, Jeffrey Smith

Documents

The “rural cemetery movement” started in 1831 in Cambridge, Massachusetts, when Mount Auburn Cemetery opened. Others followed in other cities, responding to many of the same needs and cultural priorities. Paradoxically, these “rural” cemeteries were anything but rural in our context; they were a uniquely urban phenomenon, albeit located outside cities in the adjacent countryside. Within a decade or so, the rest of the ten largest cities in the United States (and a number of the smaller ones as well) had similar burial sites—Laurel Hill in Philadelphia, Green-Wood in Brooklyn, Green Mount in Baltimore, and Mount Hope in Rochester opened …

Methods: A qualitative case study design was used to examine how the summer evaluation internship impacted students. Semi-structured interviews were conducted by the first author in February 2018. Interview questions focused on skills and knowledge gained, interest in public health-related professions, and …

Indigenous Mexicans In New York City: Immigrant Integration, Language Use, And Identity Formation, Leslie A. Martino-Velez Feb 2022

Indigenous Mexicans In New York City: Immigrant Integration, Language Use, And Identity Formation, Leslie A. Martino-Velez

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

As indigenous Mexican immigrants migrate, settle, and raise families in the United States, parents, particularly women, and their children increasingly have contact with community institutions, such as schools. Despite their growing numbers in U.S. schools, indigenous children, youth, and their parents are often invisible due to their ethnolinguistic identities and undocumented status. Understanding what parents do to help their children is essential to understanding the first generation's integration and their children, the second generation.

To better understand this, I conducted an ethnographic research study at a bilingual Head Start program in New York City, in East Harlem, where many undocumented …

Teaching During A Pandemic: Novice K-12 Teachers Tackle Existing And Unprecedented Challenges, Sarah French, Caitlin Stewart, Derek Meyers

Faculty and Staff Publications – Milner Library

This survey-based study explores the ways Covid19 has added to the existing challenges faced by novice teachers by introducing brand new stressors and exacerbating previously identified challenges during the 2020-2021 school year. We have sought to identify what kinds of support were in place for new teachers during Covid-19 and how these were received by beginning educators. What did they find comforting and useful? In what work contexts did teachers feel supported? By whom? What were teachers’ preferences for intervention and support?

Teaching The Art Of Sacred Storytelling For Use In Ministry, Abbylynn Haskell

Doctor of Ministry

Storytelling is of immense value in ministry today for enriching preaching, liturgy, teaching, worship, pastoral care, mission, evangelism and discipleship. I serve as a part-time pastor in rural Maine and have a passion for using storytelling in all these aspects of ministry. I observed an opportunity for teaching storytelling in my local ministry schools and churches.

I designed a curriculum for oral storytelling instruction that includes teaching techniques for sharing personal experiences and the re-telling of myths, legends, wisdom, folklore and Biblical stories for use in preaching, ministry, mission and pastoral care. This storytelling educational program consists of online and …
