How Much Does Alaska Spend On K-12 Education?, Matthew Berman, Dayna Jean Defeo

CAEPR Reports

In 2019, ISER analyzed Alaska’s per-pupil spending compared to that of other U.S. states, using 2017 figures. In this update, we use the same methods to contextualize Alaska’s 2019 spending. Alaska still ranks 6th highest in nominal per-pupil spending among states. However, the 2019 figures show that per-pupil spending in raw dollars was 39% higher than the U.S. average, compared to 46% higher in 2017. After adjusting for Alaska’s higher living costs, and accounting for differing per-pupil spending costs across the state, the figures show that Alaska’s 2019 per student spending was only 93% of the national average, compared to …

A Principal’S Perspective On The Role Of Principal Teacher Trust In A High Performing School, Michele Gause Broughton

Education Policy and Leadership Theses and Dissertations

There is an increased lack of trust that continues to exist in urban secondary schools among teachers and between teachers and leaders, particularly in the areas of taking the principal at their word, being able to express feelings in the workplace, and believing that the principal is an effective manager. This problem has negatively impacted the ability of principals and teachers to effectively establish healthy professional relationships and improve campus climate. This trust issue could be the result of an inability or refusal of the leader to address the gaps that exists in the relationship. This research study focused on …

Reaching A Young Audience In City And Regional Planning, Kristie P. Woo, Vinnie P. Chen

City and Regional Planning

Currently, urban planning is a rare discussion topic in schools. The youth are often excluded in the planning process as most adults question their intellectual capacity and they hold little to no political power. However, this does not have to be the case - planning has the potential to change young minds when expressed in a medium children can understand.

Conserving The American Man: Gender, Eugenics And Education In The Civilian Conservation Corps, Charles Tocci, Ann Marie Ryan Mar 2022

Conserving The American Man: Gender, Eugenics And Education In The Civilian Conservation Corps, Charles Tocci, Ann Marie Ryan

Education: School of Education Faculty Publications and Other Works

The Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) was a novel United States federal education programme that enrolled nearly three million men during the 1930s and early 1940s. This public work relief programme provides a case study of the ways that masculine, eugenicist ideas concerning public education evolved from the Progressive Era through the Great Depression. This educational philosophy was espoused by a small group of men – some educators, some not – who sought to remedy what they saw as the failures of public schooling, namely its overly feminine nature. Through an analysis of their public writings and the images that were …

Decay In Educational System: The Nigerian Perspective, Itohowo Paul Ignatius, Iniobong Daniel Umotong Dr.

Journal of Graduate Education Research

Education is the bedrock of development in every society. In developing countries including Nigeria, education is conceived as the tool through which national objectives (such as nation building, social integration and economic development) are achieved. Although education has so many prospects for developing countries, Nigeria continues to be crawling with its education sector. It is against this background that this paper seeks to answer the fundamental questions: what are the problems facing the Nigerian educational sector and in what ways can they be mitigated? The national policy of education (1998) in Nigeria has five working objectives and philosophies through which …

Gender: A Useful Category Of Analysis For Tanzanian Researchers, Florence Wenzek Feb 2022

Gender: A Useful Category Of Analysis For Tanzanian Researchers, Florence Wenzek

Journal of International Women's Studies

This article enriches reflections on the circulation of the concept of gender in the Global South by looking at the transformations of Tanzanian research on gender in education between the 1970s and the early 1990s. A close reading of the texts shows how the concept of gender has been used in this field of study since 1990; it considers variations depending on authors and their positioning. Comparing this with the writings of the 1970s and 1980s, when no one used the concept, reveals how it contributed to epistemological change. The article also reflects on the respective role of local factors …

Assessing The Comprehensive Academic Needs Of Occupational Therapy Assistant Program Students: A Focused Review Of Polk State College, Jasmine M. Thomas

Department of Occupational Therapy Entry-Level Capstone Projects

In 2016-2017, the NBCOT revised and field-tested the certification examinations for occupational therapists (OTRs) and certified occupational therapy assistants (COTAs). The revised examinations begin officially being administered and scored in 2018-2019 (NBCOT, 2021). In recent years, the Polk State College (PSC) OTA program’s faculty and staff witnessed its graduating cohorts decline from a 100% passage rate to a 75% passage rate on the revised NBCOT COTA examination (NBCOT, 2021). The purpose of this review was to examine potential causes for the decline in student passage rates, with the goal of completing an academic needs assessment of PSC OTA program students. …

An Academic Ophthalmology Curriculum As A Model For Introducing Preprofessional Students To Careers In Ophthalmology, Tony Succar, Virginia A. Lee, Christopher Karmonik, Andrew G. Lee

Journal of Academic Ophthalmology

Abstract

Ophthalmology is one of the most rewarding and fulfilling medical careers in medicine due to the broad practice scope (including a combination of medicine and surgery); patient population (treatment of pediatric and adult patients); diverse patient and pathology mix (healthy eye exams, refractions, and pathology); high patient and provider satisfaction rates; and highly specialized technology and treatments. Unfortunately, academic exposure to ophthalmology as a career in medical school curricula has had a global decline for decades. While most of the evidence-based interventions found in the literature have resulted in enhanced educational outcomes, ophthalmology exposure should be initiated earlier which …

Trends In Review Of Educational Research Systematic Reviews And Implications For Supporting Graduate Students, Ashlynn Kogut Feb 2022

Trends In Review Of Educational Research Systematic Reviews And Implications For Supporting Graduate Students, Ashlynn Kogut

Transforming Libraries for Graduate Students

Graduate students in education at my university conduct systematic reviews (SRs) as part of their dissertations as well as for publications. During the initial consultation with a graduate student, I often review the steps of a SR and suggest resources about the SR methodology. Yet, students seem to prefer to utilize journals articles as a guide, even though these example articles might not report all the SR steps. For example, limiting a search to peer reviewed journals is frequently used as a quality indicator, despite critical appraisal or quality assessment of the included articles being one of the key steps …

'Analogy-Based Comprehensive Diabetes Education' (Abcde) Improves Glycemic Control Of Diabetic Patients In An Underserved Population: Results Of A Retrospective Chart Analysis, Rajagopal V Sekhar

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

Diabetes is the leading global cause for blindness, kidney failure and amputations. Preventing these complications requires optimal glycemic control, and it is imperative that diabetic patients understand the fundamental concepts of diabetes care. Although patients attend formal diabetes education classes, many do not comprehend basic concepts of diabetes, and are often noncompliant with diet, exercise and medications. A novel approach termed 'analogy-based comprehensive diabetes education' (ABCDE) was developed to educate HIV-patients with diabetes about basic concepts of diabetes care. The object of this manuscript is to report the results of a retrospective chart review on the impact of ABCDE on …

“Does It Identify Me?”: The Multiple Identities Of College Students From Rural Areas, Elise J. Cain, Jenay F. E. Willis

The Rural Educator

The understanding of identities is an important component to understanding students and their experiences in educational contexts, especially in postsecondary education. There is limited information about the identities of college students from rural areas because this student population is often neglected as a distinct group in higher education literature. This article details a study utilizing narrative inquiry to explore the identities of three college students who graduated from high schools in rural areas. The findings suggest that these students’ races and ethnicities, genders and biological sexes, and sexual orientations were their salient social identities. Rurality was not a prominent identity, …
