Race And Hedge Funds, Yan Lu, Narayan Y. Naik, Melvyn Teo Feb 2022

Race And Hedge Funds, Yan Lu, Narayan Y. Naik, Melvyn Teo

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

We find that minority operated funds deliver higher alphas, Sharpe ratios, and information ratios than do non-minority operated funds. Moreover, minority fund managers attended more selective schools, worked at higher status investment banks, and are more likely to hold post-graduate degrees. Yet, minority managers raise less start-up capital and attract lower investor flows. Racial homophily fuels investors' appetite for non-minority funds. To address endogeneity, we leverage on an event study of minority manager fund transitions and an instrumental variable analysis that exploits racial imprinting during childhood. The results suggest that minorities face significant barriers to entry in the hedge fund …

Accidental World Teacher, Richard Delaware Jan 2022

Accidental World Teacher, Richard Delaware

Journal of Humanistic Mathematics

When the College Algebra and Calculus I video courses I created were posted on my university’s YouTube channel in 2009, I suddenly began to receive dozens of heartfelt emails from students around the world thanking me. Here I tell the story of the creation of those videos and sample the effect they seem to have had over the last decade, as I accidentally became a teacher available to the entire planet.

State Laws For Due Process Hearings Under The Individuals With Disabilities Education Act Iv: Expedited Hearings, Andrew M.I. Lee, Perry A. Zirkel

Journal of the National Association of Administrative Law Judiciary

This article is a follow-up to a triad of analyses of state law additions to the basic requirements of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) for due process hearings (DPHs). The former three articles covered the pre-hearing, hearing, and post-hearing stages of IDEA DPHs. The present article focuses on expedited DPHs, canvassing state law provisions specific to this more rapid, specialized proceeding in the IDEA. This article covers IDEA foundational requirements for expedited DPHs, and then summarizes and codes the state law provisions that supplement the federal template. Additionally, this article provides a discussion of federal preemption of state …

On Class Imbalanced Learning:Design Of Non-Parametricclassifiers, Performance Indices, And Deep Oversampling Strategies., Sankha Mullick Dr.

Doctoral Theses

The relevance of classification is almost endless in the everyday application of machine learning. However, the performance of a classifier is only limited to the fulfillment of the inherent assumptions it makes about the training examples. For example, to facilitate unbiased learning a classifier is expected to be trained with an equal number of labeled data instances from all of the classes. However, in a large number of practical applications such as anomaly detection, semantic segmentation, disease prediction, etc. it may not be possible to gather an equal number of diverse training points for all the classes. This results in …

METHODS: All first-year medical students at a medical school in the Midwest region of the United States were offered a voluntary longitudinal US curriculum. Participants were selected by random lottery. The curriculum consisted of five three-hour hands on-sessions with matching asynchronous content covering anatomy …

Commentary: Divisive Concepts And Regulation By Threat Of Baseless Lawsuit, John M. Greabe

Law Faculty Scholarship

[Excerpt] "At the State House, attention has returned to New Hampshire's so-called 'divisive concepts' law. The law, enacted in 2021, bars public K-12 teachers from engaging in certain forms of instruction on issues of race, gender, and other forms of discrimination. The Legislature is presently considering bills both to repeal the law and to extend it to the higher education context.

Those who support repeal tend to emphasize the vital need for classroom conversations on topics near the periphery of the restraints on speech imposed by law. And rightly so. The law's purpose and effect are to deter teachers and …

The Role Of Library And Information Professionals In Creating A Smart Learning Environment Using Modern Technologies And Innovations In The Covid-19 Era: Introducing Individuals’ Uniqueness Consideration, Ebubechukwu E. Uba Cln

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

With the spread of COVID-19 across the globe, a lot changed, diversified, abruptly halted or modified. Different sectors of the different countries were not left out in these changes. Nigeria learning system was also greatly affected and as such learning institutions across the nation had to be shut down till further notice. This begged to answer the question if the Nigeria learning situation has been improved enough to accommodate the technological changes that came with it. There was also the need for Library and Informational Science (LIS) professionals to step in to save the learning situation by creating a smart …

Freedom, Democracy, And The Right To Education, Derek W. Black Jan 2022

Freedom, Democracy, And The Right To Education, Derek W. Black

Northwestern University Law Review

While litigation continues in an effort to establish a fundamental right to education under the U.S. Constitution, the full historical justification for this right remains missing—a fatal flaw for many jurists. This Article fills that gap, demonstrating that the central, yet entirely overlooked, justification for a federal right to education resides in America’s education story during the era of slavery and Reconstruction.

At that time, education was first and foremost about freedom. The South had criminalized education to maintain a racialized hierarchy that preserved slavery. Many African-Americans, seeing education as the means to both mental and physical freedom, made extraordinary …

Fluid State And Diet Control In Patients With Acute Kidney Injury On Hemodialysis, Carolyn Evans-Howard

Master of Science in Nursing Theses and Projects

Prolonged hospitalization, high number of readmissions, and high mortality rates are associated with patients diagnosed with Acute Kidney Injury (AKI). The purpose of this quality improvement proposal is to address the need for more education for nurses caring for these patients. If the kidneys shut down temporarily due to acute illness or medication taken, fluid and toxins will build up in the body with no way of being released. It is proposed that if dietary and fluid restrictions are followed it may help the patient recover faster. The method proposed is to have nurses learn the necessary dietary and fluid …

Increasing Healthcare Provider Engagement With Adult Patients Regarding Organ Donation In The Primary Healthcare Setting, Evelyn Michelle Rainey Jan 2022

Increasing Healthcare Provider Engagement With Adult Patients Regarding Organ Donation In The Primary Healthcare Setting, Evelyn Michelle Rainey

DNP Projects

Though 90% of the United States population supports organ donation, only 60% actually sign up as registered donors (Health Resources & Services Administration [HRSA], 2021). This 60% makes up approximately 169 million Americans, but the chances of actually becoming an organ donor are only 3 in 1,000 (Health Resources & Services Administration [HRSA], 2021). Simply put, the need for organs far outweighs the availability of those organs for transplant. Literature reviewed supports that a lack of knowledge regarding organ donation may contribute to the decreased number of registered organ donors and that Primary Care Providers (PCP) have been successful at …

American Mission Schools And The Albert Academy School For Boys: Roots And Legacy Of Colonial Education In Sierra Leone, Theodore K. Andrews Jan 2022

American Mission Schools And The Albert Academy School For Boys: Roots And Legacy Of Colonial Education In Sierra Leone, Theodore K. Andrews

Theses and Dissertations

This work is an examination of the role and impact of American mission schools on the culture of the peoples of Sierra Leone. Colonial capitalism – that is, colonialism with a capitalist component – was accompanied with western values and Christianity. The incorporation of Sierra Leoneans into colonial society was facilitated through education. Education served the purpose of socialization, in order that the institutions and system introduced into West Africa would be maintained. This research explores how the British colony sustained its control through education, although it eventually was weakened by the success of the missionary schools. This research provides …

Teacher Perceptions Of Special Education And Race Disproportionality Within Special Education Classifications, Debra J. Daly Jan 2022

Teacher Perceptions Of Special Education And Race Disproportionality Within Special Education Classifications, Debra J. Daly

Theses and Dissertations

The lack of involvement of students with disabilities in a regular classroom has remained a major concern in education. Every year, the number of special students escalates. For instance, in the United States, students with disabilities accounted for 13.7% of all students between the ages of three to 21 by 2018 (Kositsky, 2019). According to several reports, it is evident that the lack of inclusion of these students in normal school curricula causes emotional distress, depression, withdrawal from society or suicide in some cases. Every child has the right to access quality education. Institutional leaders know that it is not …

Antenatal Pelvic Floor Education: A Review Of The Midwifery Role In Promoting Pelvic Floor Health, Hannah L. Shir

All Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Introduction: Nurse-midwives care for women from puberty until the end of life. As primary care providers, they are “with women” to help them reach optimal well-being, including pelvic floor outcomes. Pelvic floor health is important not only during menopause and aging but also throughout pregnancy and childbirth. This review examined the impact that prenatal education or training on pelvic floor muscle exercise (PFME) had on women’s pelvic floors. Methods: An integrative review was conducted after searching CINAHL, PubMed, and Scopus on the terms antenatal, pregnancy, prenatal, education, attitudes, knowledge, and pelvic floor. Original works from 2015–2022 examining the effects of …
