Contextualizing The Impact Of Faculty-Led Short-Term Study Abroad On Students’ Global Competence: Characteristics Of Effective Programs, Colleen Fisher, Laurel Iverson Hitchcock, Ashley Neyer, Stacy C. Moak, Sarah Moore, Scott Marsalis

Journal of Global Awareness

Short-term faculty-led study abroad programs are high-impact pedagogical practices designed to enhance students' global competency. However, there is a gap in our understanding regarding the specific educational components of short-term faculty-led study abroad programs that promote global competency. This systematic review examined nearly two decades of research on such programs (n=86) to assess the educational components associated with increases in students' global competencies using Steinberg's (2017) educational components as a framework. Results indicated that the educational components included in global competency-building education abroad courses varied substantially across programs and global regions. The components most strongly supporting enhanced global competency were …

Meti Volume Highlights Education, D. Morgan Davis

Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship

Consider this picture: A sandy courtyard some- where on the outskirts of a desert village. A group of boys—ages perhaps 8 to 16—are gathered outside the entrance to a simple, well-worn little building. They are seated or kneeling in the sand, huddled in the last vestiges of the late morning shade. Each holds a text or a tablet. Some are reading, some are looking out to where the pale sky meets a broken line of housetops and trees, reciting, in a quiet murmur to themselves, the words of the book they are holding. Some gently rock back and forth as …

Hearing Silence: Understanding The Complexities Of Silence In Democratic Classrooms And Our Responsibility As Teachers And Teacher Educators. A Response To "Creating A Democratic Mathematics Classroom: The Interplay Of The Rights And Responsibilities Of The Learner.", Kersti Tyson, Allison Hintz, Andrea English, Diana Murdoch

Democracy & Education

This response to Priya Prasad’s and Crystal Kalinec-Craig’s article on the interplay of the Rights and Responsibilities of the Learner aims to engage with and add on to the authors’ exploration of learners overexercising or opting out of their rights. While grappling with these challenges alongside the authors, our curiosity deepened about a significant and understudied facet of democratic classrooms: silence. Through this response, we consider the multifaceted dimension of silence and how a focus on silence may help us more fully understand the tension between learners’ rights and responsibilities to self, each other, and the collective. Specifically, we engage …

Moderation Effects Of Language Skills, Residential Tenure, And Education On Immigrants’ Learning From News, Yulia S. Medvedeva, Glenn M. Leshner

All Works

Authors of the knowledge gap hypothesis predicted television’s potential to narrow the gaps in some circumstances. This online experiment aimed to bound the conditions that facilitate the leveling role of audiovisual news for a foreign-born audience ( N = 137) residing in the United States. Results showed that audiovisual news narrowed the gaps by improving learning for those who scored low on language or U.S. education and by attenuating improvements in learning for those with high language or education scores. Conversely, text news widened the gaps by sizable gains in learning for those with better language or more education.

Student Attitudes Contribute To The Effectiveness Of A Genomics Cure, Adam Haberman, Et Al. May 2022

Student Attitudes Contribute To The Effectiveness Of A Genomics Cure, Adam Haberman, Et Al.

Biology: Faculty Scholarship

The Genomics Education Partnership (GEP) engages students in a course-based undergraduate research experience (CURE). To better understand the student attributes that support success in this CURE, we asked students about their attitudes using previously published scales that measure epistemic beliefs about work and science, interest in science, and grit. We found, in general, that the attitudes students bring with them into the classroom contribute to two outcome measures, namely, learning as assessed by a pre- and postquiz and perceived self-reported benefits. While the GEP CURE produces positive outcomes overall, the students with more positive attitudes toward science, particularly with respect …

Transforming Minnesota's Early Care And Education Infrastructure, Nicole Frethem May 2022

Transforming Minnesota's Early Care And Education Infrastructure, Nicole Frethem

Student Scholarship

In 2021, the Minnesota legislature authorized the Great Start for All task force to present recommendations for how the state can provide “access to affordable, high-quality early care and education that enriches, nurtures, and supports children and their families,” to “all families” in Minnesota.

The early care and education landscape in Minnesota has experienced dramatic changes in programming and investments over the last twenty years. In the early 2000s, the state’s primary child care subsidy program, the Child Care Assistance Program (CCAP), was moved from the Department of Children, Families and Learning to the Department of Human Services in an …

Energy Portraits For Flute, Clarinet In B-Flat, Violin, Cello, Piano, And Percussion, Luis Solis May 2022

Energy Portraits For Flute, Clarinet In B-Flat, Violin, Cello, Piano, And Percussion, Luis Solis

Music Theses and Dissertations

Energy Portraits is a 25-minute work for flute, clarinet, violin, cello, piano, and percussion based on the nine Enneagram personality types. The Enneagram system delves into underlying motivations and thought patterns of different people rather than only external behaviors, so this piece incorporates the typical overall energy of each number as a miniature portrait. The movements are not in the same order as the nine types from the Enneagram but are reordered and renamed for musical reasons. This allows the listeners who are not familiarized with the Enneagram to still understand the theme and energy of each movement.

Flourish is …

Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is the third most common vascular disease and includes approximately 900,000 cases annually in the United States. The purpose of this quality improvement project was to enhance education regarding VTE prophylaxis for registered nurses on a medical-surgical inpatient unit at a hospital in the Midwest. This study was initiated due to one nurse’s perception that staff on this unit lacked confidence and expertise on the importance of VTE prophylaxis interventions. Participants completed a VTE knowledge pretest, followed by an educational intervention on VTE prophylaxis utilizing Health Stream. After the intervention, participants completed a VTE knowledge post-test. The …

Addressing Basic Needs Security At Santa Monica College, Brooke Guelker

Education Policy and Leadership Theses and Dissertations

Basic needs insecurity has gained recognition as a significant barrier to completing a postsecondary credential. Research has shown that students enrolled at community colleges experience basic needs insecurity at rates higher than their four-year counterparts. Given the community college’s expansive mission, it is imperative that these institutions attempt to mitigate basic needs insecurity by identifying innovative solutions tailored to their specific student populations. The original aim of this study was to explore the utility of the planned change framework in understanding how a partnership between a postsecondary institution (Santa Monica College) and a nonprofit organization (Swipe Out Hunger) led to …

Dissertations, Theses, and Projects

There is a lack of representation for the LGBTQIA+ community in our education system. The youths who belong to this community feel underrepresented, isolated, and unsupported. The consequences of not having enough support and struggling in the school system are detrimental. LGBTQIA+ youths have higher rates of mental health issues, homelessness, and suicide (Rusow et al., 2018). Support systems are crucial for kids to have. Support systems can come from family, school, and peer supports. Familial and school support are the most focused on when it comes to youths’ concerns. Many people in the education system and at home can …

Principal Laissez-Faire Leadership On Teacher Turnover: A Look At The Role Gender Has On Teachers With Different Levels Of Experience, Aarol Tyler Broyles

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this correlational study was to explore the relationship, if any, between school principals’ laissez-faire leadership and teacher turnover. My research expanded the literature to focus specifically on principal gender and teachers at different levels of teaching experience. I used the Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire (MLQ) to measure the independent variable, principals’ laissez-faire leadership, and the Turnover Intention Scale (TIS-6) to survey the dependent variable, teacher turnover intention. The study found that experienced teachers who are led by laissez-faire principals are more likely to leave their job. The findings illuminated that it is teachers with more than three years …

Career, Academics, Exploration, Shadowing, Application, And Reality Store: Caesars, Brooke Hunstad

Dissertations, Theses, and Projects

Society’s expectation is that once a student graduates from high school, they will do one of two things; enter the workforce or continue their education. The flaw within this expectation is that rarely do high school students experience what their futures may look like depending on their career path. The focus of this curriculum is to provide knowledge and experiences that can help students reach society’s expectation. The population of focus is middle to high school students, preferably juniors and seniors. Research was collected and a literature review was prepared to support the demand of the curriculum in education and …

Is Agriculture Being Implemented In Private School Classrooms? The Impact Of Teacher Willingness And Availability Of Resources., Casey Moss

Theses and Dissertations

Agricultural literacy has been a topic of concern as most of the population have little to no understanding of agriculture, and the impact it has on society. Agricultural literacy can be defined as “having knowledge and understanding of agriculturally related scientific and technologically based concepts and processes required for personal decision making” (Meischen & Trexler, 2003, p.44). Numerous studies have been conducted to determine the significance of agricultural literacy beginning with elementary aged children and continuing through high school. The majority of studies conducted focus on public school students and teachers. This has led to a gap in the knowledge …

The issue of SARS-CoV-2 virus (COVID-19) infections has reached a global pandemic scale, forcing the majority of social interactions to move to the online platform. Online tool access has heavily increased, migrating basic human interactivity to online channels to disseminate information and to keep a connection with others while maintaining a physical distance. With this, various educational institutions around the world, including the Philippine academic community, have made it a priority to maximize online efforts so that education may still continue despite the constraints. For many learning communities, this has been an abrupt change from in-person classroom activities to heavy …

Addressing Systemic Inequities: A Psychoeducational Group For Advocating For African Americans, Jaree' Barnwell

Educational Specialist, 2020-current

This paper will discuss and describe the development of an open psychoeducational group that will empower people of the community through education to advocate for African American/Black people within institutions that may perpetuate barriers. Acknowledging that one in four people struggle with mental health issues, it is imperative to consider an appropriate treatment modality that destigmatizes mental health and equips participants with information. This group is especially relevant as one in three African Americans, who struggle with mental health concerns, will never receive the appropriate care comparatively afforded to white populations. This thesis will concisely discuss the education system, the …

Badger State Nationalism: World War I, The Ku Klux Klan, And The Politics Of 'Americanism' In 1915-1930 Wisconsin, William Levi

Masters Theses, 2020-current

The Ku Klux Klan is most synonymous with racism and religious bigotry, especially during the revival period of the 1920s. What is often less understood is the aggressively nationalist nature of the Klan, which in some locales proved to be its most potent symbol and recruiting tool, epitomized by the use of the American flag and the ‘100% Americanism’ slogan. In Wisconsin, where entry into World War I was least popular in 1917, the following months saw a series of ‘loyalty struggles’ develop; many Wisconsinites regretted their early lack of support and sought to prove their loyalty and patriotism to …
