Utilizing Organizational Theory To Improve Education Opportunities In Correctional Facilities, Kelly Sullenberger Jun 2022

Utilizing Organizational Theory To Improve Education Opportunities In Correctional Facilities, Kelly Sullenberger

The Scholarship Without Borders Journal

With 2.3 million people incarcerated, the United States is one of the most highly concentrated prison systems in the world (Sawyer & Wagner, 2020). In order to be in a position to improve that, the system of incarceration needs to genuinely care and invest in the lives of the inmates living in these facilities. The opportunity to receive an education is one way that allows for true rehabilitation and often can give an inmate a greater sense of purpose. This paper examines current programs in California that allow inmates to work towards and/or receive a bachelor’s degree while serving their …

The Impact Of Entrepreneurship Education On The Entrepreneurial Intention Of Students At The International University Of Excellence In Mali: An Exploratory Study, Boubacar Sanogo, Oumar Bah, Amara Nimaga

The Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance

This paper is research devoted to the self-employment of students of the International University of Excellence of Bamako through the teaching of entrepreneurship as a factor in the development of entrepreneurial intention among students in training. This choice is explained by several factors: the State's recruitment capacities in the public service are limited; the modern private sector which constitutes the natural outlet for young graduates is not in a position to offer employment for the many promotions of students trained annually who constitute thousands of people who increase the non-working population. It is becoming necessary to put in place systems …

Student Retention And Success In An Rn-Bsn Program: Determining Variables And Methods, Audrey C. Tolouian, Melissa Wholeben, Diane Rankin

Nursing Faculty Publications

Background

The Online Registered Nurse to Baccalaureate Science in Nursing (RN- BSN) Program has a retention rate of close to 97.5% (UTEP, 2020). Attrition rates in nursing programs are high. The National League for Nursing (NLN) last reported a 25 % attrition rate which may double for minority students in four-year nursing programs (NLN, 2014; Elkin, 2019). As online courses in colleges and universities are growing and are predicted to become mainstream by 2025, it is essential to identify factors contributing to our retention rates. American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) has made it part of its 2021-2022 policy …

Teaching Inequality In Brazil: A Study Abroad Exploration Of Race, Class, Gender, Sexuality, And Geography, Edvan P. Brito, Anthony J. Barnum

Journal of Global Education and Research

This paper presents and analyzes a case study of a five-week study abroad course called Inequality in Brazil: An exploration of race, class, gender, sexuality, and geography. The course was constructed to teach social inequality in the context of Brazil by using place-based and experiential learning within the framework of critical pedagogy (Freire, 1989). By examining inequality through the lens of culture and geography, students were empowered to become student-teachers in their explorations of race, class, gender, and sexuality as they linked theory to practice and lived experience. This paper provides an example of how study abroad can be …

A Way Forward In The Covid-19 Pandemic: Making The Case For Narrative Competence In Pulmonary And Critical Care Medicine, Rana Awdish, Margaret M. Hayes, Avraham Z. Cooper, Megan M. Hosey, Alison Trainor, Rosemary Weatherston, M. Elizabeth Wilcox

Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine Articles

Each surge of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic presented new challenges to pulmonary and critical care practitioners. Although some of the initial challenges were somewhat less acute, clinicians now are left to face the physical, emotional, and mental toll of the past 2 years. The pandemic revealed a need for a more varied skillset, including space for reflection, tolerance of uncertainty, and humanism. These skills can assist clinicians who are left to heal from the difficulty of caring for patients in the absence of families who were excluded from the intensive care unit, public distrust of vaccines, and morgues overtaken …

Unraveling The Double-Bind: An Investigation Of Black And Latina Women In Stem, Katlyn L. Milless Jun 2022

Unraveling The Double-Bind: An Investigation Of Black And Latina Women In Stem, Katlyn L. Milless

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Civil rights activist Robert P. Moses was a driving force in defining equitable dissemination of quality science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) education as an act of social justice. My work borrows this frame to highlight access to STEM education as a civil rights issue and to emphasize the importance of taking a social justice approach to interventions for those who experience intersecting systems of oppression (i.e., Black and Latina women), and for whom previous intervention efforts have not adequately addressed. Ameliorating racial and gender disparities through fostering psychological safety (e.g., belonging) in STEM fields has been a substantive focus …

Harmonica Pedagogy For The Full Inclusion Instrumental Music Classroom, Expanding Opportunities For Students With Disabilities, George Wallace Miklas

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The harmonica was once taught in American public schools coast to coast from the 1920s through the 1940s when imports of harmonicas were curtailed due to World War II's efforts. Since then, American public-school instrumental music curricula have long forgotten the only wind instrument that makes music when the student inhales or exhales. The harmonica provides a natural calming effect to the player and medical benefits, including being a tool for overcoming mental health issues and expressing needs and feelings without words. During the era when the harmonica was taught, pedagogy lacked uniformity. Consequently, confusion about the instrument's unique tuning …

Universities, Ignore Silver Students At Your Peril, John Mcgrory, Claudia Fernandez Jun 2022

Universities, Ignore Silver Students At Your Peril, John Mcgrory, Claudia Fernandez

Irish Journal of Academic Practice

As higher education institutions compete to gain competitive advantage in the areas of student enrolment, engagement, graduate numbers, and programme delivery, are these institutes at risk of missing out on one of the largest growing markets? The cohort of persons aged 65 years and over, is expected to double in size by 2040. But the cohort of those who are currently aged 55+ years is not extensively targeted by higher education institutions globally. Platitudes about ‘mature students’ are often used when discussing this demographic, but educational departments identify any person over 23 years as a ‘mature’ student. Hence, is this …
