A Comparative Study Of The Reading Achievement Between Two Approaches To Primary Reading Instruction--The Initial Teaching Alphabet And The Traditional Orthography, Rodney O. Johnson Oct 1971

A Comparative Study Of The Reading Achievement Between Two Approaches To Primary Reading Instruction--The Initial Teaching Alphabet And The Traditional Orthography, Rodney O. Johnson

Student Work

Reading is the single most important subject that a child learns at school. It is the base on which much of his success or failure in school is built. The National Council of Teachers of English estimates that four million elementary school pupils have reading disabilities. In many instances we do not have effective reading programs in junior high school and many high school graduates score from one to two years below grade level in reading when they enter college. It has become necessary to establish remedial reading instruction, beginning with second grade, and to continue it through high school …

Analysis Of Achievement Using Individualized Instruction Compared With Other Group-Paced Types Of Instruction In Two Selected Omaha Public Schools: An Experimental Case Study, Lou Ann J. Landholm

Student Work

Individualization of instruction is one of the most important directions for innovation and reform in American education. The past decade has seen serious and widespread attempts to introduce more and more instruction of an individualized nature into our elementary schools. Yet there is a question of continuing concern to elementary teachers. How can they adequately meet the individual needs of pupils in a school operation which is geared to masses of students? Although this problem largely remains unsolved, attempts have been made to provide for individual needs through various plans of individualized instruction.

The Low Income People's Voice - August 1971, Low Income People's Voice

The Low Income People's Voice

The Low Income People's Voice was a free-of-charge community newspaper founded in 1970 parallel to an era of major urban renewal in Portland, Maine- and reflecting an activism in response to large-scale demolition and marginalizing populations in the city.

The August 1971 issue features articles about The Rosa True School and Saint Dominic's School- both in the West End, and both later repurposed into apartment buildings, The Spring Street Tenants' Union, the creation of the Clark Street and Gray Street playground, the Oxford Street Youth Drop-in Center, and the opening of the Maine Mall.

A Comparative Investigation Of The Effects Of Frequent Testing Upon Achievement In Secondary Advanced Algebra, John Thomas Fullerton Aug 1971

A Comparative Investigation Of The Effects Of Frequent Testing Upon Achievement In Secondary Advanced Algebra, John Thomas Fullerton

All Master's Theses

Relatively speaking, few studies have concerned themselves with the problem of frequent testing, and as Keys pointed out, empirical evidence, uncomplicated by differences in the amount of testing material employed, on the effects of frequent testing is, at best, scarce (14:427). Also many studies used tests and test results for direct instruction, thus introducing additional variables. Furthermore, the choice of subjects and disciplines has been limited, the better part being taken from college psychology and sociology classes or high school science classes. This investigation was not an attempt to modify previous experiments, nor was it an attempt to identify which …

Problem Solving Ability And Effective Group Behavior Of Introductory Education Students, Gary Lewis Lord Aug 1971

Problem Solving Ability And Effective Group Behavior Of Introductory Education Students, Gary Lewis Lord

All Master's Theses

The need to understand group processes in the classroom and to use them to develop more effective learning is growing among educators. The group and its dynamics comprise significant conditions for learning and work either for or against the individual's development. One of the most significant learning developmental characteristics that is readily influenced by group variables is the individual's ability to solve problems. Not only is problem solving ability influenced by group variables, but it is through group process methods that this ability is most effectively learned. Thus, problem solving is believed to be a social skill. That group variables …

Relationship Of Convergent And Divergent Teaching To Creative Performance, Robert Bruce Kibler Aug 1971

Relationship Of Convergent And Divergent Teaching To Creative Performance, Robert Bruce Kibler

All Master's Theses

This study investigated the effect on test scores on the Torrance Tests of Creative Thinking. Form A, resulting from convergent and divergent methods of teaching fifteen half-hour mini-lessons in social studies to fourth, fifth, and sixth graders. Results favored the Divergent Group, and their scores were more widely dispersed. Recommendations included a follow-up study, replication of the experiment with variations in the sample and treatments, and investigation of the possible utility of a two-score achievement test.

Duration Of State-Dependent Learning Induced By Ncfs-Ecs, Larry Wayne Morris Aug 1971

Duration Of State-Dependent Learning Induced By Ncfs-Ecs, Larry Wayne Morris

All Master's Theses

This paper investigated the course of the state-dependent function induced by NCFS-ECS at 24 hr. time intervals, beginning at 24 or 48 hrs. after NCFS-ECS treatment and terminating at 120 hrs. Results of both experiments indicate a state-dependent effect lasting up to 72 hrs., was absent at the 96 hr. retention test but, apparently returned by the 120 hr. retention test. Recommendations included investigation of fixed time intervals after the 120 hr. retention test.

Mission: Life, John S. Damm Jul 1971

Mission: Life, John S. Damm

Concordia Theological Monthly

It has become almost a truism to say that we are currently living in a time of crisis. The word "crisis" is now rather easily applied to a wide range of social, economic, political, educational, environmental, and technological phenomena that make up much of the context of contemporary life. This pervasive sense of crisis certainly has not left untouched the realm of Christian education.

Thinking And Feeling In Education, Robert L. Conrad Jul 1971

Thinking And Feeling In Education, Robert L. Conrad

Concordia Theological Monthly

One of the troubles with teachers in the church and in public education is that they are adults. They do not think and imagine like children, but they take the results of adult thought and expect children to handle them. At the same time, their own education has led them to be suspicious of feelings and imagination, so that they ignore the feelings of children or try to get them to control their feelings and imagination with rational thought. Both of these tendencies have been challenged by recent studies.

The Effect Of Time-Threat On An Arithmetic Test Situation, Russell Dean Flaskerud Jul 1971

The Effect Of Time-Threat On An Arithmetic Test Situation, Russell Dean Flaskerud

All Master's Theses

There has been a difference of opinion regarding whether or not timing tests of ability is advantageous or hinders performance. Much experimentation has been done in the area of intelligence testing, but little has been done on actual classroom-type testing. The results of timing intelligence tests have been varied with little agreement among the studies. The purpose of this study was (1) to test the effect of time-threat on the performance of eighty-two sixth grade students taking an arithmetic test, and (2) to investigate the effect of time-threat on students of different arithmetic abilities.

The Analysis Of The Reaction Phase Of Reading By Examining The Frequency Of Pupil-Initiated Talk In Second, Fourth, And Sixth Grade Reading Classes As Measured By The Verbal Interaction Category System, Charles A. Allen Jr.

Student Work

Reading is probably the most basic important skill taught in the elementary grades. School success and future goals hinge upon a person's ability to unlock the written code and to comprehend the meaning. From the halls of the Congress of the United States has come the "right to read" proposal. Every child has the "right to read" as guaranteed by the Fourteenth Amendment of our Constitution.

The Administrative Development Of Graduate Education At The University Of Omaha, 1909-1968, Martha Stuart Helligso

Student Work

Graduate education in the United States is now only about eighty-five years old and it is still in process of development. Since the establishment of graduate work at Johns Hopkins in 1876 the Graduate school has lived through a number of phases in responding to a variety of educational and social pressures; it has become the major home of research and scholarship, and the training thereof; it has incorporated both foreign and domestic features in its organization and programs; it has affected and been affected by the undergraduate program; it has moved and sometimes been torn between scholarly and professional …

An Item Analysis Comparison Between Teaching And Achievement Testing In The Intermediate School Of Wapato, Washington, Norman M. Drake

All Master's Theses

The Intermediate building of the Wapato School District administered the Iowa Tests of Basic Skills twice during the school year. The primary purpose of this testing was to measure the annual growth in skills of each student. The ITBS was used to measure those skills gained between the fall and spring testing. The results of the comparison of the spring and fall testing reflected that students were not gaining a school year's advance on the test results for a school year's instruction. The study was undertaken to determine the appropriateness of the Iowa Tests of Basic Skills to the course …

Final Examination Scores In Algebra As A Function Of Retesting, Otto Francis Ruud Jun 1971

Final Examination Scores In Algebra As A Function Of Retesting, Otto Francis Ruud

All Master's Theses

Many teachers as well as students feel that our system of evaluation is far from perfect, but these same people have offered no alternative workable plan which would in whole or in part relieve the objections. Hopefully this study will demonstrate a philosophy of the teaching of mathematics in conjunction with a companion plan of evaluation which will relieve many of the basic objections while at the same time produce more learning. The philosophy that a more cooperative attitude in regard to assignments, testing, and make-up work are more conducive to learning is the basic aspect of this study. It …
