MA TESOL Collection
The main purpose of this text is to provide a format through which a foreign student can gain a better understanding of the United States and its people. A secondary goal is to encourage students to use and improve their aural/oral skills. Due to the nature of the topic of the lessons, students should find it easy to contribute to active discussions. At times, the students are forced to mix with the target culture through activities provided at the end of each lesson.
The text consists of fifty lessons with each lesson having a single topic as focus of contrast, …

Getting Educated At The Zoo, Nancy Heneson
Getting Educated At The Zoo, Nancy Heneson
Zoos and Aquariums Collection
In this issue we present three papers that deal with the subject of the zoo. Although the focal concern of each paper is different and the positions of the authors range from whole-hearted support of the institution to frank skepticism, all express a belief in the potential educational value of zoos. This editorial, however, has a different premise. It is not meant to criticize the other papers, but rather to raise questions from another point of view.
An Overview Of Zoo Goals And Exhibition Principles, Randall L. Eaton
An Overview Of Zoo Goals And Exhibition Principles, Randall L. Eaton
Zoos and Aquariums Collection
It is not uncommon among progressive-minded zoo professionals these days to hear disdain for the function of zoos as recreational. This attitude is understandable in that traditionally, zoos have done little but offer amusement along with parklands or picnic facilities. The progressive zoo person sets his or her goals above the old-fashioned recipe of crowding as many exotic animals as possible into an amusement-oriented menagerie to an authentic theme for exhibition intended to educate the public, offer research possibilities, and preserve and propagate species. Nevertheless, recreation remains a primary function of zoos. Most zoo visitors do not seek education in …

Women And The New International Economic Order, Karima Korayem
Faculty Book Chapters
The objective of this paper is to examine the impact of the New International Economic Order (NIEO) on women in the Arab World. We shall discuss this impact in two steps: First, the implications of the NIEO for the economies of the Arab countries. Second, and on the basis of that, the impact of the NIEO on the educational and employment profiles of Arab women. However, to find out what effect the NIEO will have on the educational and employment profiles of Arab women, one should first get acquainted with these profiles as they stand. Therefore, the paper will be …

Academic Achievement, Self-Concept And Attitudes Towards Reading Of Students In Bilingual And Traditional Programs., Theresa Doris Chretien
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This study was designed to investigate the comparative achievement in reading and mathematics, self-concept, and attitude towards reading of bilingually educated and traditionally educated students. To determine differences in achievement, 239 third- and sixth-grade students enrolled in bilingual education (French-English) and traditional education classes in St. Martin Parish, Louisiana, were pre- and post-tested with standardized instruments in word knowledge, reading comprehension, self-concept, and attitude towards reading. The findings were tested statistically at the .05 level. In academic achievement, there were significant differences between the two groups only in mathematics computation, favoring bilingually educated students at the third-grade level and traditionally …

An Instructional Sequence In Experimental Design And Statistics For Graduate Music Therapy Students., Anthony Arthur Decuir
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The purpose of this study was to develop a course in experimental design and statistics for graduate music therapy students. This study was developed in order to address, specifically, research problems in music therapy. Two recent independent studies of graduate research projects of music therapy studies indicated that the chief deficiencies were inadequate research designs and the under-utilization of statistical devices. As an addendum to the development of the course, a survey of the statistical course offerings in graduate and undergraduate music therapy curricula was conducted. The sixty-four music therapy departments approved by the National Association for Music Therapy were …

A Study Of The Musical Achievement Of Elementary Students Taught By The Memphis City Curriculum Guide And Students Taught By The Traditional Approach., Susan Elizabeth Hensley
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The musical achievement of students taught from the Memphis Curriculum Guide, based on the Orff and Kodaly philosophies of music education, was compared to that achieved by students taught from the basic program outlined in the Exploring Music songbook series. Students were chosen from the fourth and fifth grades in the Weaverville Elementary Schools, Weaverville, North Carolina, and materials used were chosen for these grade levels. The Music Achievement Tests, Tests 1, 2, and 3, by Richard Colwell were used for comparison of pretest and posttest means for the experimental and control groups on both grade levels. All classes, experimental …

The Efficacy Of Computer-Based And Tape-Recorded Assistance In Second-Semester Freshman Ear-Training Instruction., Janet Claire Garton
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Harmonic dictation materials available in the Ear-Training Laboratory at Louisiana State University were programmed for computer presentation in order to observe the effects of the computer medium in comparison to the traditional laboratory approach. In accordance with the Solomon Four-Group Design, the sixty-two second-semester freshman music theory students were assigned randomly to computer and tape groups. Half of each group was assigned at random to take a pretest which was designed by the experimenter. After six withdrawals from the course, a total research population of fity-six students remained. Members of both the experimental and control groups were asked to practice …

Task Accomplishment Ability Of Children In Small Groups., Nancy Larson Gennuso
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The primary purpose of this study was the investigation and analysis of the behavior of small groups of children in a task accomplishment situation. The secondary purpose was to ascertain the effects of a group discussion generated by questions adapted from creative problem solving techniques. A review of literature revealed a lack of research on small groups of children in these areas. Thirty-six small groups of fourth and fifth grade children worked in groups of four on two construction-type tasks, one for pretest and one for posttest. Eighteen of the groups served as experimental groups and participated in the group …

Age Differences In Memory For Movement: Effects Of Strategy And Preselection When Ecological Validity Is Varied., Katherine T. Thomas
Age Differences In Memory For Movement: Effects Of Strategy And Preselection When Ecological Validity Is Varied., Katherine T. Thomas
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
As children mature through the childhood years, motor performance increases in a relatively linear way. This increase in performance is frequently attributed to physical growth factors such as increased height, weight and strength. However, cognitive factors in memory also develop and affect the planning and control of movement. The purpose of these three experiments was to evaluate the developmental increase in strategy use for planning movements and to determine if the motor performance of younger children could be enhanced by inducing strategy use that does not occur spontaneously. The effects of subject selected (preselected) or experimenter selected (constrained) movements was …

Educator Stress In Terms Of Selected Variables., Jack L. St. Clair
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The purpose of this study was to determine if differences in the extent of educator stress were a function of the interaction between grade level taught, years experience, and level of job satisfaction. Data analysis was intended to reveal if differences in global stress scores of groups of educators assigned on the basis of selected variables were attributed to grade level taught, years of experience, and job satisfaction as a career choice. Educator responses were solicited concerning their attitudes toward stressful work related events thought to be associated with teaching. Educator responses were also obtained concerning grade level taught, years …

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The purpose of this study was to conduct a follow up survey of the socioeconomic status of mildy mentally retarded individuals no longer participating in selected parish vocational programs in Louisiana. It was important to ascertain the socioeconomic status of these mildly mentally retarded adults for the following reasons. There were expressions of concern about the perceived low poverty-level status, high unemployment rates, and menial type jobs for the mildly mentally retarded. These concerns may be inaccurate or subject to change over time. Therefore, this study was designed to provide comparative data between those individuals that completed their vocational training …
