Second-Language Acquisition And The Development Of Pragmatic Code Selection Skills., Rebecca Ann Marcon Jan 1981

Second-Language Acquisition And The Development Of Pragmatic Code Selection Skills., Rebecca Ann Marcon

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Language samples and nonverbal behavior of 50 children attending bilingual Kindergarten programs were recorded from children's conversations with a puppet on three separate occasions. In order to determine the influence of the listener's language on children's code selection, the puppet spoke a different language on each occasion. Of particular interest was the extent to which children would make pragmatic adjustments in their verbal and nonverbal language codes in response to different listener needs. Differences in code selection which could be attributed to variation in second language proficiency were explored by contrasting the behavior of children classified as monolingual, limited second …

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The problems investigated in this study were: (1) Does the use of redundancy and analogies to emphasize the main verbal scientific concepts of an instructional unit facilitate comparable learning for field independent (FI), intermediate cognitive style (ICS), and field dependent (FD) undergraduate college students? (2) Are there differences in the aural, visual, and preferred sense recall of FI, ICS, and FD undergraduate college students? The population consisted of undergraduate education students at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge during the Spring Semester, 1981. At the age of 85, Corinne Honegger-Baumann died on March 14, 1981, in her home near Rapperswil/Switzerland. Though she had returned permanently from New York to Switzerland about ten years ago, she nevertheless continued to follow the activities of the SAHS, of which she was a life member, with keen interest. For decades, Mrs. Honegger resided with her husband, a successful Swiss businessman, in New York. It was during World War II, which wrought so many horrors upon innocent children, that she decided to become active in humanitarian concerns. In 1942, upon Mrs. Honegger's inspiration, H.C. Validity Of Running Tests Of 4, 8, And 12 Minutes Duration In Estimating Aerobic Power For College Women Of Different Fitness Levels., Jeffery Joseph Dorociak Jan 1981

Validity Of Running Tests Of 4, 8, And 12 Minutes Duration In Estimating Aerobic Power For College Women Of Different Fitness Levels., Jeffery Joseph Dorociak

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

One of the objectives of any physical education program is the development and measurement of cardiorespiratory fitness. The most accepted measure of aerobic power is maximum oxygen consumption which must be measured in a laboratory setting and therefore, does not lend itself to mass testing. Of the field tests that have been developed, distance running tests are most often recommended. This experiment investigated the validity of distance run tests in estimating aerobic power for college women of different fitness levels. More specifically, distance covered in 4, 8, and 12 minutes of running were correlated with maximal oxygen consumption. Body composition …

Recovery In Tort For Educational Malpractice: Problems Of Theory And Policy, Robert H. Jerry Ii Jan 1981

Recovery In Tort For Educational Malpractice: Problems Of Theory And Policy, Robert H. Jerry Ii

Faculty Publications

This Article considers whether denial of a cause of action for educational malpractice is consistent with recognized tort principles and the general policy considerations underlying those principles. After briefly summarizing three lawsuits in which the cause of action has been advocated and rejected, it explores the collision between theory and policy that permeates the decisions. The Article suggests that refusal to recognize the cause of action is incompatible with accepted tort principles, and that a cogent theory supporting nonrecognition cannot be articulated within the confines of the accepted principles and the general policies upon which those principles are based. If …

South West Aboriginal Studies Bibliography : With Annotations And Appendices, Anna Haebich, Lois Tilbrook Jan 1981

South West Aboriginal Studies Bibliography : With Annotations And Appendices, Anna Haebich, Lois Tilbrook

Research outputs pre 2011

The south west of Western Australia was the first region of the state to experience the impact of European settlement, when the Swan River Colony was founded in 1829. Yet the Aborigines of this unique area have remained largely obscured in its history for almost a full 150 years. This is ironical, as their counterparts of the Pilbara, Goldfields and Kimberleys, feature prominently in literature, and have captured the imagination of artists, writers and academic researchers alike.

There are several reasons for the neglect of the original inhabitants of the south west by observers of the day, and later by …

Space To Play: Games And Activities For Spatial Concepts In Primary School Children, Helen Mansfield (Ed.) Jan 1981

Space To Play: Games And Activities For Spatial Concepts In Primary School Children, Helen Mansfield (Ed.)

Research outputs pre 2011

Spatial concepts are amongst the most important mathematical concepts that young children develop. Ideas of shape, size, and position are part of the young child's mathematical world from the very beginning. The spatial environment of the child is always changing. Objects move around in his environment, just as he moves around and observes them from different positions. The relationships between objects and their relative shapes, sizes and positions are constantly changing.

In our teaching of the Space strand of the primary mathematics syllabus, we are trying to develop in children the understanding and skills associated with spatial relationships that are …

Teaching Children With Special Needs: A Western Australian Perspective, Kevin Casey Jan 1981

Teaching Children With Special Needs: A Western Australian Perspective, Kevin Casey

Research outputs pre 2011

The education of children with special needs in Australia gained considerable impetus from the report of the Interim Committee for the Australian Schools Commission under the chairmanship of Professor Karmel when, in 1973, it made strong recommendations for a substantial increase in the government expenditure on special education. It highlighted inadequacies in the existing services in special education both in terms of facilities and manpower and suggested greater responsibilities for the education of handicapped children be taken by the State Education Departments. The upgrading of qualifications of teachers in Special Education and the necessary establishment of suitable courses in Australian …

The Effects Of Classroom And Counseling Intervention On The Moral Development Of Junior High School Students, Paul Romualino Madarang

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

This study investigated the relationship between various forms of intervention and gender on the moral development of junior high school students. The three types of intervention identified and studied were: (a) a classroom values education program, (b) crisis counseling, and (c) a combination classroom-counseling intervention. The cognitive-developmental approach of Lawrence Kohlberg served as the theoretical base for this study. In order to determine the effects of the two variables on the moral reasoning of children, 195 junior high school students were divided into three treatment groups and one control group. Students were pretested using the Defining Issues Test (DIT). Treatment …

Purpose. The main purpose of this study is to develop a viable practice-teaching program appropriate for teacher preparation in Iran. Procedure. This study is descriptive research that typically employs observation, interview, and survey methods. Observation and tentative design were …
